A Second Harvest: Privately Held Farmland and Its Portfolio Diversification Impact
Abstract This study examines the portfolio impact of privately held farmland to determine its diversification benefits within mixed asset portfolios. Using Markowitz mean-variance optimization over a 56-year period from 1969 to 2024, we analyze optimal portfolio weights under both constrained and unconstrained allocation assumptions. Our findings demonstrate that privately held farmland largely improves portfolio outcomes, with the strongest benefits emerging under constrained allocations.

Come closer and see / See into the trees … … It’s always the same / I’m running towards nothing The Cure, A Forest (1980) If the rain comes / They run and hide their heads … The Beatles, Rain (1966) For a long time, I’ve had a fascination with woods and forests and the sense of quiet and stasis they can offer. That moment of being alone in the trees, directionless; light and sound are different, muted, but at the same time amplified in subtle ways I’ve never been able to explain.

Archilochos in His Time
Whether expressed by the poet or a persona, Archilochos' warrior poems offer first-hand information about war and the war experience of the poet, his comrades, and his contemporaries. In fact, rather than merely shared memories, grim reports, or entertaining declarations, many such poems advise and educate a wider audience, as well as other warriors such as Archilochos' friend Glaukos.

Reader's View: Editorial wrong on pipelines, oil
While sounding reasonable, the editorial really was a plea to let Enbridge steamroll its way through our most pristine waters — as it has done for years. This is a different day. The "water defenders" at Standing Rock and pretty much everywhere are standing up to the very real threat to their water and manoomin, or wild rice, which is being harvested right now.Who is an environmental extremist? One who spends a few bucks on a lock he or she can use to become attached to pipeline equipment?
