South L.A. residents count down as construction persists for the George Lucas Museum
In early 2025, South L.A. residents can expect a new spacecraft to land in Exposition Park: the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. After many trials and tribulations, the innovative museum has found its home right next door to USC, whether South Central is ready for it or not.
Annenberg awards Reuters team for series on Nigerian war crimes
On Monday, USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism awarded the Selden Ring Award for Investigative Journalism to the Reuters team behind an explosive four-part series about atrocities committed by the Nigerian military. Published in December last year by the international news agency, the Reuters series titled “Nightmare in Nigeria” unveiled the alleged war crimes by the Nigerian military in their conflict with the Islamic insurgent group Boko Haram.
Women’s History Month highlights the ongoing fight for women’s rights in Iran
This March marks the 36th annual Women’s History Month – a month that commemorates and highlights the past and current contributions of women in society. For Tara Mojtahedzadeh, a sophomore global health major and president of the USC Persian Student Organization, Women’s History Month is an avenue to spread awareness of the plight of women in Iran.
Graduate students prepare for next steps in unionizing
After an overwhelming vote to form a union earlier this month, USC graduate students are preparing for their next steps in the process of officially signing a contract. The results of the vote mean that graduate student workers employed by the university can now begin to advocate for better working conditions on a larger scale. On February 17, graduate workers voted 1,599 to 122 in favor of forming a union with United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW).
Latinx Student Assembly changes name to ‘Latine Student Assembly,’ and student publications are working to reflect the switch
The Latine Student Assembly, formerly known as the Latinx Student Assembly, has ceased using the term “Latinx” in its title. Two student publications on campus, Daily Trojan and Annenberg Media, discuss their policies regarding word usage and inclusion.
Battling conflict with art: how USC students deal with Asian hate
Discussing cultural differences isn’t easy, but art may be the way to go. In the coming months, USC’s chapter of Dear Asian Youth (DAY) will attempt to do that through their first ever art exhibition called ‘Culture Wars.’ Founded by 16-year-old Stephanie Hu in 2020, DAY started as a poetry blog about Asian hate in America and the feelings of grief, anger, and healing that surround it.
‘Many of them were comparing it to Hogwarts’
On Saturday, student representatives from USC School of Cinematic Arts, Annenberg, Roski and Kaufman led arts and humanities workshops on campus for nearly 300 elementary school students from South Los Angeles. Called USC Kids News, the event is the sixth of its kind to teach third through sixth graders how to excel in arts journalism and other skills in the humanities.
‘Elvis the Pelvis’ and Tom Hanks’ fatsuit - Daily Trojan
I want to preface this review with a couple of notes. One: I am an Annenberg student, not an SCA student, and I know absolutely nothing about academic film theory. Two: I love Elvis. One of my most prized possessions happens to be a genuine 1977 photograph of his grave that I found behind an antique store shelf. As I type it out now it seems like a very morbid confession, but I purchased it in good faith, I promise.
Movies to inspire your break in L.A.
As a majority of USC students begin to spend their summer breaks in or around Los Angeles, what better way to attract some inspiration on how to spend our free time around town than with movies? Here are just a few fun ones for each of the city’s different facets: from hipsters and influencers, to hustlers and cynics. “Ingrid Goes West” (2017) If you, too, are horrified by the effects of influencer culture in L.A., this one’s for you.
Five LA based brands to kickstart your summer wardrobe
Moonkissed Collective’s love letter tank, a TikTok sensation, is the perfect shirt to wear while falling in love this summer. (Photo courtesy of @moonkissedcollective) As each day gets closer and closer to 90° highs, it’s hard not to dreamily envision a summer ahead, free of midterms and 8 a.m.’s. With a new season around the corner, it’s hard to fight the urge to completely remodel your closet to welcome the summer months (especially when you have an uncontrollable online shopping addiction).
Hot Girl Classics: a guide to library staples
Betty Smith, author of “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” writes on the aspirations of an adolescent girl born into unfortunate circumstances. (Photo courtesy of Creative Commons) Yes! Another list of books you should read! Hopefully, you’re taking the hint by now. Just kidding. Maybe. Anyways. It’s already overwhelming enough to pick a book to read. But, I’d argue it’s even more overwhelming choosing a classic to take on.
Seven page-turning books from 2021 Original
Sage Wheeler | Daily Trojan Look, it’s OK you didn’t get around to reading a lot last year, no one blames you. When does anyone have time to pick up a book when we’re suffering from Zoom burnout or running late to newly in-person courses because you didn’t know that the “BB” in front of the room number signified took place in the building’s basement?
