CPUC: Don’t saddle Monterey Peninsula ratepayers with unnecessary, expensive desalination project Original
Quick Take At its meeting this Thursday, the California Public Utilities Commission will make a key decision about California American Water’s proposed desalination project on the Monterey Peninsula. Bruce Carlos Delgado, mayor of Marina, urges the CPUC to reject the proposal, citing old data, high costs to ratepayers and severe environmental risks.
Guest Commentary | CPUC: Don’t Saddle Monterey Peninsula ratepayers with desalination Project
By Bruce Carlos Delgado (Ed. note: With water an issue in Santa Cruz County, and considering how a desalination project was rejected in Santa Cruz, we’re presenting this piece from Marina Mayor Bruce Carlos Delgado about a desal proposal in Monterey County.) The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has a critical opportunity on August 14 to hit the brakes on the outdated, unnecessary and environmentally destructive California American Water (CalAm) desalination project.
California Coastal Commission must halt unjust, destructive Monterey desalination plant
As two mayors of color, we oppose a desalination project that would impose environmental injustice and economic racism on the people of Seaside and Marina in Monterey County. The California Coastal Commission will vote on Thursday whether to approve a desalination plant being forced on the Monterey Peninsula by California American Water (Cal-Am). The Monterey Peninsula does not want or need this oversized, overpriced groundwater desalination plant.
Water recycling project fits needs on Monterey Peninsula
Expansion of the Pure Water Monterey recycled water project is the best option for the Monterey region to meet its future water supply needs. Unfortunately, California American Water Co., a private water supplier, is discrediting the project in the hopes of instead getting approval for their much more costly, oversized and environmentally harmful groundwater desalination project to be built in, around and through the city of Marina.
Water recycling project fits needs on Monterey Peninsula better than proposed desalination plant
In summary State agencies should not approve the desal proposal, and instead allow the Monterey region to focus on a recycled water solution. By Bruce Delgado, Special to CalMatters Bruce Delgado is the mayor of the city of Marina, bdelgado62@gmail.com. Expansion of the Pure Water Monterey recycled water project is the best option for the Monterey region to meet its future water supply needs.
Bruce Delgado, guest commentary: Coastal Commission should deny Cal Am appeal
About 10 years ago, our neighboring cities on the Monterey Peninsula and a private, for-profit water company, California American Water, made a sweet deal that defies environmental justice. To overdevelop their water supply and their profits, Cal Am has been pushing for a groundwater (not ocean water) desalination project under Marina’s sand dunes that would pose major risks to the local groundwater basin and environmentally sensitive habitat.
Marina bears heavy burden in desalination dispute - Capitol Weekly
In parched, drought-stricken California, where water is considered liquid gold, the politics of power and wealth are playing out in real-time. The California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) recent decision to allow the California American Water Company (Cal-Am) to proceed with its Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project desalination plant is great news – that is, if you live in Carmel, Pacific Grove or Monterey.
Bruce Delgado: Cal Am’s proposed desal plant bad idea and bad for Marina
California American Water Company, a subsidiary of the national, for-profit water provider, American Water, is proposing a massive new desalination plant in the city of Marina. This project poses a substantial threat to our local groundwater supply and the coastal ecosystem, not just in Marina, but across much of the Monterey Peninsula.
