Bruce Watson’s Biography
After seven years in the Boy Scouts, four years as an altar boy and thirteen years of parochial schooling, Bruce Watson more or less mastered the art of subversion from within. He further developed these skills as an English instructor at Virginia Tech, where his extensive work warping the minds of America's youth earned him teaching awards and distinction as Virginia Tech's top-ranked English teacher.
A staff columnist for AOL's Daily Finance and Walletpop websites since 2009, he has authored more than a thousand articles on personal finance and business. He also writes on film, food, the environment, and assorted "weird news" topics for New York Indie Scene, Green Daily, Slashfood, and Holidash. His unique perspective and sharp commentary have helped make him Daily Finance's most-read writer, with a weekly readership that numbers in the hundreds of thousands. His work has been excerpted by dozens of websites, including The New York Times, The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, The Huffington Post, The Stranger and China Daily. And, notably, in print by Wired magazine.
Watson has written for several magazines and journals, including Time Out New York, The Roanoker, The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, The Brush Mountain Review, and A Cafe in Space. He has co-authored two books, Military Lessons of the Gulf War (Greenhill Books, 1993), and Chronology of the Cold War at Sea (Naval Institute Press, 1997), consulted on Roger Libbey's Sex From Aah to Zipper (Playful Pleasures Press, 1993) and edited Cavario H's autobiography Raised by Wolves (BoP Publishing, 2010). His latest publication, "Black Tears (With a Side of Butter)" was recently featured in Primal Picnics: Writers Invent Creation Myths for Their Favorite Foods (Whole World Press, 2011).
While at AOL, Watson also branched out into video work, starring in Daily Finance videos and episodes of Walletpop's popular "Savings Experiment," a weekly web program that is sponsored by Bank of America. He also has a strong public speaking background: in addition to his work as a lecturer, he has appeared in panel discussions, delivered keynote addresses, and presented papers at academic conferences.
