Phase II of Multi-Million Dollar Renovation
The Houstonian Club has unveiled Phase II of its $23.5 million-dollar renovation, a project that began in October 2021. The entire project, culminating in Phase III, will be completed by the end of 2022. The renovation project includes: A complete overhaul of 70% of the facilities. This includes the club’s lobby, rotunda and atrium. A new indoor turf space featuring updated equipment and 4,100 feet of additional training space. An enhanced luxury shopping experience in the club’s boutique shop.
Group X Rooms are Changing
IMAGE COURTESY OF SHUTTERSTOCK With people wanting to be entertained, technology costs coming down, and more on-demand sources providing better content, your group exercise room is probably beginning to look like a rock concert. In the past, it was simple: Cycling — dark and moody; Group X — bright and energetic; Yoga — calm and serene. But now the lines are blurred. Cycling classes are integrating Group X components that require you to see what you are doing.
Smart Design at Clubs
In a world of advancing technologies and experts for everything, smart design still centers on thoughtful problem solving. If you want your club design to work for you rather than against you, then start with being as smart as you can about what you want, what you do well and what you want to deliver. Designers are at no loss for ideas, but the true test of smart club design starts with the client knowing what their strengths are and what is important for them to attract and retain memberships.
What Women Want in a Health Club Locker Room
In 2014, when Wakeen purchased her club, she implemented just a few, but telling, upgrades—installing new carpeting and new toilets. “We put in these extraordinary, amazing, power-flush toilets, since we were constantly having problems with the old ones,” she says. “We still get tons of compliments about them. “I never thought women would be so pleased by something as basic as a toilet flush!” she says. If the plumbing isn’t working, she adds, no one will be happy.
Give Your Gym a Makeover by Rethinking Your Floor Space
You may not have noticed, but your health club may be shrinking. Not the entire building, of course, but with functional fitness gear, spa and tanning services, personal training areas, dance fitness classes, group training, and other fitness trends taking root, your club may be running out space. Design and environment matter, and not just for safety/liability reasons. How you utilize space directly affects revenue and retention.
Locker Rooms: It's the Details that Matter
Health club design is about nailing the details that have an impact on your members. A good example of this is the sink area of your locker rooms. We’ve all walked into a locker room or restroom and thought “Wow, this is nice!” — as well as had the opposite reaction. However, once you get past the beautiful finishes and design, it quickly boils down to how it works. Start with lighting.
