Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

It was for a civil society group in Lithuania which wanted to promote more woman and family friendly legalization.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I have not no, but I would like to do so.

How is social media changing news?

It spreads "news" quickly before the "truth" can even put its pants on.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Frank Navasky, played by actor Greg Kinnear, who is typewriter-obsessed journalist, in the movie "You've got Mail!".

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Ask me this in 10 years.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Nothing comes to mind, truth be told.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

As directly, transparently and openly as possible. Just be upfront and to the point. I prefer getting emailed on pitches.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft Word followed by heavy research skills. That is all.

What's your favorite social network?

I enjoy discord. I don't use twitter or reddit that much.

Who do you wish followed you?

None. I consider myself like whiskey, an acquired taste. Follow me if you want, if not, that's perfectly acceptable.

Why did you become a journalist?

It sort of just happened. I was a essayist for a while and turned to journalism to broaden my scope.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did yes and I was the editor in charge of proof reading and publishing the articles received.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A church commentary article on the new Pope and also an article covering Lithuania's historic March for Life event.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Focus on the truth and nothing but the truth. Never write for clicks.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Frankly speaking, anytime. I usually respond within 24 hours, sometimes even within an hour or so.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

To write an article on the history of chemical abortion, which later led to me writing a medical article on it's concerns.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Once got offered to write an article advocating for the use of sex toys. They clearly were not familiar with my work.

What's your favorite drink?

I like cider. A glass of whiskey with steak is good as well.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In the kitchen cooking up steak, out on a walk or with my significant other.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

None.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

People think covering religion is only about doctrine and worship, but in fact it’s deeply tied to politics, culture, and social issues.
