Articles by Bryan Waterman
It’s been a while since we’ve made and shared a mix — the last one may have been our 2016 favs — but we kicked around some files by email as the end of summer approached and came up with the following. Have fun guessing which one of us chose what and where we’ve been sourcing our recs.

Causers of This (Instrumentals), by Toro y Moi
• Includes unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more. 'Causers of This' is a glimpse into my early life as a suburban, American, POC. It is a reaction to what it feels like to lose. Ironically, all of the sessions and files making up the album were lost in a car burglary in 2009; all that was left were the instrumentals.
Mary Shelley, Morrissey, and me
A few years ago I received an email from someone in Ireland asking if I was the same Bryan Waterman who had, in the mid-1980s, published a certain poem in one of those vanity volumes of the American Poetry Anthology. Alas, I was.
Thoughts on Richard Serra in Qatar
DOHA, Qatar — This spring, Richard Serra has made his mark on the Arab Gulf in a characteristically big way. Several important pieces are currently on view in Qatar, two of them permanent installations commissioned by the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA). In addition to the permanent pieces, two gallery shows (on view through July 6) allow viewers to take in the full sweep of Serra’s four-plus decades as one of America’s — and the world’s — foremost sculptors.
Lou Reed, 1942-2013
So it’s just about three days since Lou Reed died and I admit I’m kind of holding my breath, waiting to see if he rises from the tomb on the morning of the third day. It’s hard to imagine him as anything other than transformed into a more perfect state. A lot’s been said online and in print in the last couple days by a lot of people, many of whom knew Lou Reed the person or the vast corpus of Lou Reed’s work better than I do.
Moon in eclipse | AllMusicBooks
There's just something about this book that rubs me the wrong way. Too much gossip, not enough music. Author Bryan Waterman doesn't even begin to talk about the recording of the landmark Marquee Moon album until 69% of the way through the book, and the song by song review lingers for a few short pages at the 72% mark. After that, it's critical reaction and tying up loose ends. All the rest is background noise for what is a tremendously focused recording.
Appointment Television…
Marquee Moon was one of those records that, upon first hearing it, stopped you dead in your tracks. Despite the comparisons to Velvet Underground, it really didn’t have a specific musical reference point. Sure, it had loads of influences — a borrowed idea here, a lyrical nod there — but they were all wrapped up into a singular musical statement — and one totally at odds with the rest of the music emanating from the CBGB’s scene it sprang from.
