Using Ubuntu derivatives *and* Ubuntu, how do I get the Ubuntu codename?
0 I need the Ubuntu codename for generating an apt source. On Ubuntu, I can use lsb_release --codename --short, which will return (e.g.) trusty. On (e.g.) Linux Mint, if I use lsb_release -cs, it returns (e.g.) rosa. If I want the upstream codename, I can use lsb_release -csu (which returns trusty). However, if I use lsb_release -csu on Ubuntu, I get an error lsb_release: error: no such option: -u. Is there a way to get the upstream-iest Ubuntu codename, including on Ubuntu?
Ubuntu misspellings
It seems people just can't figure out how to spell the word "Ubuntu." I've personally seen Ubantu, Ubunut and some others, and others have reported seeing Unubtu and even Uboontu. Because of this, I have been working on something I think you will all enjoy. No, it isn't a way to prevent these spellings, or some weird Mac OS autocorrect that fixes any typos.
OpenGL 2.1 or higher for Windows XP
OpenGL can't be "upgraded", and it must be included with your graphics driver. OpenGL exposes GPU hardware capabilities to the operating system. If your GPU hardware were more capable, it could support later revisions of OpenGL on Windows XP with a newer AMD Catalyst device driver package. But your hardware is at least 6 or 7 years too old to support that. Now, emulation of any revision of OpenGL on the CPU is possible.
Process 'niceness' vs. 'priority'
When talking about processes priority is all about managing processor time. The Processor or CPU is like a human juggling multiple tasks at the same time. Sometimes we can have enough room to take on multiple projects. Sometimes we can only focus on one thing at a time. Other times something important pops up and we want to devote all of our energy into solving that problem while putting less important tasks on the back burner.
How do unknown fonts get substituted?
I think it is decided not by Ubuntu but by the program (LibreOffice, OpenOffice etc.). I could not see anything related to LibreOffice per se but OpenOffice has a nice wiki with some details on how this "Font Fallback" works. It might be applicable to LibreOffice also, in general. I am reproducing some sections from the wiki below for clarify. It is hard to explain better than what is in the wiki, so better to read it from there: What is Font Fallback in OpenOffice.org 2?
What is `$?` ? Is it a variable?
$? is a special variable in bash that always holds the return/exit code of the last executed command. You can view it in a terminal by running echo $?. Return codes are in the range [0; 255]. A return code of 0 usually means everything is ok. Other values indicate errors. Most applications return 1 or custom values.
Why isn't Oracle Java included in the standard Ubuntu repo?
Ubuntu has OpenJDK in its repository. It's the open-sourced version of the Oracle JDK. It is a myth that OpenJDK is lower and less stable, but this was the past. Today (since version 7), they're pretty equal. OpenJDK is even the reference implementation for Java 7. It's a race between those two implementations, as some new features appear first in OpenJDK and then later get included to OracleJDK, while some features get included the other way round.
How to wipe a hard disk completely so that no data recovery tools can retrieve anything?
There are lots of methods and lots of debates around the topic; basically this is about the type of the support (magnetical disk or flash disk) and about the sensitivity of your informations.
What happens if you Trash the Trash?
I was just wondering what would happen if I went and moved the Trash located here: To my Trash? I mean if I go to that folder and right-click on the contents and tell it to move it to the Trash.
sudo permission doesn't time out durring apt-get upgrade
Consider this: You type and get a list of things that need upgrading with a "Y " confirmation. before you can read the list, and type "Y" or "n", the phone rings, or your boss comes in, or you do some thing else. You come back an hour later, and hit Y to install updates. you are not prompted again for a password. presumably, any more sudo commands in the shell will execute, because the timer has been on hold waiting for the user input.
