Rumpus Original Fiction: The Familiar Phantom
“An aged man is but a paltry thing, A tattered coat upon a stick…” -W.B. Yeats, “Sailing to Byzantium” The doorbell rang, and I hesitated. Ian had been gone for nearly a month. The memory of his packed suitcases lined up in the hallway. The slamming of dresser drawers, the stuffing of clothes and books in a duffle bag, my shrill pleas for him to stay and just that breath, that lingering pause before he walked out into the fading evening sun—all this was very much present.

C. Fausto Cabrera and Zeke Caligiuri on Precarity and Critical Resistance
In November 2023, Coffee House Press released American Precariat: Parables of Exclusion, an anthology of essays edited by a collective of incarcerated writers involved in the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop. The volume interrogates the complexity and fluidity of class and caste systems in the United States, and includes transcribed conversations of the editors discussing each essay. In the latest Works of Justice podcast, two of the editors, C.

For famed Minneapolis artist Alec Soth, the mail delivered an unlikely friendship
The letter arrived at photographer Alec Soth’s studio in St. Paul early this year. “Please forgive the audacity of this letter,” it started. “I reach out in great admiration and respect. For years, I have relied on photography for reference material, given my incarceration, and have developed a great admiration for the genre.” Soth, an internationally known photographer, gets loads of e-mails and so many direct messages that “it’s a problem,” he said recently via Zoom.

In essays and art, formerly and currently incarcerated Americans describe violence, racism and parenting in prison, and life after release
Teach a Man to Fish One of the first things I learned behind bars was how to fish. Fishing is a way to share items and information with other inmates across the unit while confined to your cell, sometimes for 17 hours a day. We fished every day. Fishing created our community. I was 16 in 2003 when I was charged and incarcerated as an adult at the D.C. jail. Back then, the cells had bars, so fishing was easier. Our blankets were long enough to reach the opposite side of the tier.
OPINION EXCHANGE | Counterpoint: Inmates like me should have the right to vote
It was very transparent of Merrill Matthews to use the most notorious and brutal examples of murderers to sway opinion about who should vote (“Should prisoners have the right to vote?” May 10). I assure you, had John William “Bill” King had the right to vote before James Byrd was avenged by the state it would not have led to his release. Nor would inmate voting lead to any of the most disruptive members of our society being back on the streets prowling for victims.

Quantum liquid droplets in a mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates
In recent years, quantum fluids have been studied largely in gaseous form, such as the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of alkali atoms and related species. Quantum liquids, other than liquid helium, have been comparatively more difficult to come by. Cabrera et al. combined two BECs and manipulated the atomic interactions to create droplets of a quantum liquid (see the Perspective by Ferrier-Barbut and Pfau). Because the interactions were not directional, the droplets had a roughly round shape.

Crude protein content of pollen from the main botanical species used by honeybees in Uruguay
Abstract Nutritional value of pollen from floral resources utilized by honeybees is very important for beekeeping, fundamentally in areas were modern agriculture causes reduction in biodiversity. Crude protein content of pollen was determined for 25 floral species frequently visited by honeybees. The values found ranged from 14,5 to 41,5%, and most species had pollen with more than 20% protein, minimum accepted value for proper nutrition of bees.
