Fear the Walking Dead: Cindy Hawkins [Review]
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 703, CINDY HAWKINS. In this week’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead, John Dorie, Sr. and June make the best of their bunker situation, but the past comes back to haunt them both in “Cindy Hawkins.” CALIFORNIA DREAMING Day after day for the first sixty odd days in Teddy’s bus bunker underground is fairly uneventful. John and June do their chores, they play some music and board games, and they take a little nip of whisky before bed.

Fear the Walking Dead: Six Hours [Review]
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 702, SIX HOURS. It is a race against time on this week’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead. Baby Mo won’t stop crying because of hunger, Grace is struggling to adjust, and Morgan still believes he can build a future for his little family unit in “Six Hours.” This was a one-hour examination of grief and postpartum depression, so for those shaken by “In Dreams,” this episode examines the long-term repercussions of that subject matter.
The Walking Dead - Rendition [Review]
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR “RENDITION.” In this week’s episode of The Walking Dead, we focus on Daryl and the Reapers. While this episode would be much improved with a band of that name, instead we just have a lot of talking and posturing. Let the interrogation begin! Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Dog run from the Reapers in the woods.
The Walking Dead - Acheron: Part 2 [Review]
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR “ACHERON: PART 2.” This week’s episode of The Walking Dead is all about advantages. The advantage of alliances, the advantage of circumstances, and the advantage of wrong turns. At the Commonwealth, processing goes better for some than others, and Eugene nearly buckles under the pressure. In the train tunnels, Negan deals with the aftermath of his choice not to help Maggie. Daryl chases down Dog and discovers relics of the past.
The Walking Dead - Acheron: Part 1 [Review]
THIS REVIEW INCLUDES SPOILERS FOR “ACHERON: PART 1.” After the character heavy final episodes of season 10 of The Walking Dead, season 11 is back to group mission storylines. The premiere drops us into a more horror movie like setting than we have seen in a while on the show. The Alexandria group must explore dangerous new avenues for food, while the captured group at the Commonwealth undergoes lengthy questioning. Both stories are high on tension, and low on friendliness.
The Walking Dead S.11 - Open to Trust [Review]
There is no greater commodity in the undead apocalypse than trust. You may think the answer is food, but the premiere episode of the new season makes a decent argument for both. With the supply of food at a wrecked Alexandria dwindling, the group must find new sources of meals. That means dangerous missions, and even more perilous relationships. HISTORY A long running theme of The Walking Dead is the trust built between the main characters.
[REVIEW] Fear the Walking Dead: The Beginning
This review contains spoilers for episode 616, “The Beginning.” On the season finale of Fear the Walking Dead, the scattered groups scramble to find shelter against the coming warheads. Told in separate stories, the episode shows us how each group spends their “final” moments. Some cozy up to loved ones, some keep fighting, and some think of going out on their own terms. In what seems like the end of all things, this episode sets us up for the beginning of the next chapter of this world.
[REVIEW] Fear the Walking Dead - USS Pennsylvania
On this week’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead, Morgan leads an expedition to the USS Pennsylvania to head off Teddy’s plans for a nuclear clean-slate. With all the various groups working together under Morgan to end the threat and find Alicia, the usual dynamics of a dodgy situation come into play. Heads will butt, walkers will moan, and the motivations of our heroes will continue to shift. BEING SOMEONE ELSE Teddy debriefs Dakota on the bridge of the ship for information on Morgan and his group.
[Review] Fear the Walking Dead - J.D.
A walker overheats the engine when June’s RV runs it over. (Photo Credit: Ryan Green / AMC) This review contains spoilers for episode 613, “J.D.” On this week’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead, June goes in search of a lead on the Enders, and Dwight and Sherry struggle to reconnect. This episode examines the intersection of forgiveness, redemption, bonds, coincidences, fate, and the importance of closure, which is a lot to cover well, but this episode manages to accomplish just that.
[Review] Fear The Walking Dead - In Dreams
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 610, “IN DREAMS.” On this episode of Fear the Walking Dead, Grace wakes up with amnesia and relies on a young girl for help. With fragments of Grace’s past and Morgan’s voice guiding her, Grace must figure out what comes next. This episode is about hope and helplessness, and how the people we love give us a reason to survive. IN BLOOM A groggy Grace wakes up, flat on her back, with the sky and pink flowers overhead.
[Review] Fear The Walking Dead - The Door
John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt) helps Morgan and Dakota get past a horde on a bridge. (Photo: AMC / Fear the Walking Dead) One thing I’ve always loved about Fear the Walking Dead, is that they spend time on individual characters and small groups while still doing the work. Whether it is plot or character development, something is being built each episode. When we last left off, John Dorie had snapped. Despite John’s love for June, John’s desire to be done with killing was a stronger pull.
[Review] The Walking Dead: Here's Negan
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 1022, “HERE’S NEGAN.” In this week’s episode of The Walking Dead, we dive into the long-awaited Negan backstory about his life with Lucille. Though an odd choice for the season finale, it is actually one the better episodes of the series. This despite having a turducken of flashbacks. It is a strange way to close out a season, but at least the season ends on a high note in quality.
[Review] The Walking Dead: Diverged
Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) share water but little conversation in the aftermath of their fight at the cabin. Photo Credit: Eli Ade /AMC / The Walking Dead This review contains spoilers for episode 1021, “Diverged.” In this week’s episode of The Walking Dead, Carol and Daryl decide to diverge on different paths at a literal fork in the road to match the metaphorical one they have been traveling for awhile now.
The Walking Dead: Splinter - Review
Princess (Paola Lázaro) fights captivity and past trauma in Splinter. (Photo: AMC / The Walking Dead) This review contains major spoilers for episode 1020 of The Walking Dead. The Walking Dead has always been about the various forms of trauma. How living through an apocalypse scars you, and how scars obtained prior to the apocalypse helps you survive it. In a Princess heavy episode, we are introduced to a new group that have a penchant for dressing up like sci-fi movie soldiers.
The Walking Dead: One More - Review
The mysterious Mays (Robert Patrick) calls Father Gabriel’s bluff. (Photo: AMC / The Walking Dead) This review contains spoilers for episode 1019. On this week’s episode of The Walking Dead, Gabriel and Aaron scavenge for food for Alexandria, and they test the limits of hope, survival, loyalty, and bluffing. As we open on a wildflower covered field, Gabriel and Aaron get down to some walker killing business. Flowers on this show haven’t seen this much blood since Carol and Lizzie.
The Walking Dead: Find Me - Review
This Review contains spoilers for episode 1018. In one of the most cinematic episodes of The Walking Dead, Carol and Daryl spend the day together and pick at the scab of their friendship. We learn the origins of Dog, and we see what Daryl did in the years after Rick blew himself off of a bridge. A Day In The Country Friendship can be difficult in even the best of times.
The Walking Dead: Home Sweet Home - Review
Maggie (Lauren Cohan) reunites with her old team and races to save her new one. (Photo: AMC / The Walking Dead) This review contains spoilers for episode 1017. After an unexpectedly long break between the first half of the season and the season finale, The Walking Dead added six bonus episodes to the season. “Home Sweet Home” is the first episode. The story features Maggie’s return, and it offers a taste of where Maggie has been since she left.
The Stand: The Circle Closes - Review
Frannie reconsiders how badly she needs fresh water. (Photo: Robert Falconer / CBS @2020 CBS Interactive, Inc.) This review contains spoilers for the episode and the series. This new adaptation was meant to be a fresh start for The Stand. A fresh perspective. In some moments, it managed to explore new grounds. The time hopping for instance, was a device meant to speed up the opening act of journeys out west. Whether it was effective or not, is up for debate.
The Stand: The Stand - Review
This review contains spoilers for episode 8 of The Stand. It is no coincidence that the Coloradans in this episode of that have no reason to have hope, have the most. While Mother Abagail’s limited power has faded, Flagg’s power has on been on the rise. Literally. Flagg is floating around his penthouse, charging up on the fear and adoration of people like an energy vampire that exclusively works overcrowded rock concerts.
The Stand: The Walk - Review
Glen Bateman (Greg Kinnear) and Kojak take a moment to rest. (Photo: Robert Falconer / CBS @2020 CBS Interactive, Inc.) This week’s episode is about faith and delusion. Mother Abagail sets a mission, Nadine runs toward her destiny, and everyone puts their future in the hands of their faith. In what is the slowest paced episode to date, the show manages to have its most interesting outing yet. The feel of this episode is a lot like the 1994 version, but in the best way possible.
Review: The Stand: The Vigil
Please be advised that this review contains spoilers for the episode. Randall Flagg makes his move this week for Team Evil. With a new player, a new plan, and a new hot tip on the Boulder spies, everything seems to be coming up Flagg at the start. But all is not as it seems as Lady Luck seems to be full on making out with the good guys. Episode 6 of The Stand includes a lot of tense scenarios, but an underwhelming execution of them on the screen.
The Stand: Fear and Loathing in New Vegas - Review
Randall Flagg has an ice cold milk while he makes his pitch to join his side. (Photo: Robert Falconer / CBS @2020 CBS Interactive, Inc.) This review contains minor spoilers. As the saying goes, you can’t con a con. This week we delve into the world of deceit in a fully linear episode of The Stand. We spend time with the spies in both New Vegas and Boulder, and we examine the reach of Flagg’s power. As the first episode without a time hop, the show is much more fluid and involving.
Review: The Stand: House of the Dead
This review contains minor spoilers. This week’s episode of The Stand deals with disguises. The disguises we take on to hide and the ones we take on to protect others. In “House of the Dead,” we focus on the five main committee members. We watch the committee in their official role, and we flashback to follow the more dangerous aspects of their journey to Boulder. Up until now we’ve mostly seen Harold (Owen Teague) as a lovesick boy that wears his emotions on his sleeve.
Review: The Stand: Blank Page
Amber Heard plays Nadine Cross in the new adaptation of The Stand. Credit: CBS All Access This week’s episode of The Stand is about choices. Do these characters have choices or are they stuck on a pre-destined path? Does one’s past choices mean that their path is set? Or can you change who you are by making choices that you may not have made in your old life? This episode looks at the various points of view of characters struggling with these decisions.
Review: The Stand: Pocket Savior
Larry and Rita make their escape from New York in The Stand. Credit: CBS All Access Please note that the review below includes mild spoilers for the second episode of The Stand. As strange as it sounds, this second episode of The Stand covers more terrifying ground than the first. Though episode one covers the start of the super flu and downfall of man, it also covered more hopeful viewpoints. This episode covers the gray views.
The Stand Ep 1: The End of "The End" is the Start
Whoopi Goldberg plays Mother Abagail in the new adaptation of The Stand on CBS All Access Credit: CBS All Access When the opening of the new adaptation of The Stand begins, it is very clear that this is a different take on a familiar story. It also telegraphs that linear storytelling is out the window on this go round. The first shot is a view of a cornfield accompanied by the voice of Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) giving us a quick pitch to make a stand against the darkness.
Review: "The Stand" Delivers
Credit: CBS All Access It is as inevitable that this new telling of The Stand will be compared to the current epidemic as it will be to the original novel. Though filming ended just shy of the COVID shutdowns, some moments feel pulled straight from the post-COVID year. On the other hand, there are moments that feel pre-pandemic. One can’t help but wonder what would have changed if this adaptation had been shot post-pandemic.
