The Georgetown men’s basketball team played from behind all game, falling to the Providence Friars 88-68 on Feb. 26. Sophomore guard Primo Spears was stellar in the loss, though, pouring in 26 points and dishing 4 assists while junior guard Jay Heath added 19 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting. A somber air filled Capital One Arena on Sunday afternoon as the Hoyas (7-24, 2-18 Big East) hosted the Providence Friars (21-9, 13-6 Big East) for what was many Hoyas’ final home game.
MEN’S BASKETBALL | Hoyas Exorcize (Blue) Demons
For the first time in 693 days, the Georgetown men’s basketball team has a Big East win to celebrate. The Hoyas took down the DePaul Blue Demons 81-76 for their first regular season conference win since March 2, 2021. Sophomore guard Primo Spears racked up 21 points and 6 assists to lead the way for the Hoyas. Georgetown (6-15, 1-9 Big East) limped into the Jan. 24 game winless in conference play, while DePaul (9-12, 3-7 Big East) had split games against No. 8 Xavier and No. 23 Providence.
MEN’S SOCCER | Hoyas End Successful Season With Loss to Tulsa
The Georgetown men’s soccer team showed some impressive resilience and growth this season. It turned around an early losing streak in remarkable fashion, but was unable to improve on its success from last season, falling to the University of Tulsa Hurricanes in the second round of the NCAA tournament. On Nov. 20, the Hoyas (12-6-3, 8-1-1 Big East) fell 1-0 to the Hurricanes (10-5-2, 5-3-1 American Athletic Conference), capping off their tumultuous season.
Georgetown Clinches No. 1 Seed in Big East Championship
Senior midfielder Aidan Rocha followed his penalty kick miss to score an early goal and help the Georgetown men’s soccer team earn a massive 3-0 victory over No. 9 Xavier. The showdown carried significant implications for the Big East championship race as the Xavier Musketeers (9-1-5, 3-1-4 Big East) were right on Georgetown’s (8-4-3, 6-1-1 Big East) heels in the Big East standings.
MEN’S SOCCER | Georgetown Suffers Through Challenging Start to the Season
Georgetown men’s soccer lost 2-0 after conceding two second-half goals against James Madison University on Sept. 20. The Hoyas are now on a three-game losing streak and mired in one of the most disappointing starts in recent years. The Georgetown men’s soccer team (1-4-2, 0-1 Big East) has been one of the top college programs in the country for the past several years, winning four out of the last five Big East Tournament Championships and the NCAA Division I National Championship in 2019.
MEN’S SOCCER | No. 21 Hoyas Fall to No. 14 Maryland
The Georgetown men’s soccer team couldn’t come back from an early deficit against the University of Maryland Terrapins on Sept. 10, falling 1-2. First-year midfielder Jack Panayotou scored Georgetown’s only goal with a left-footed shot from just inside the box. The No. 21 Hoyas (1-2-2) came into Saturday’s matchup playing well but having won only one of their first three games. No. 14 Maryland arrived in Washington, D.C. fresh off a 6-1 drubbing of the University of Virginia on Sept. 5.
MEN’S SOCCER | No. 21 Hoyas Earn Draw Against No. 6 Denver
Junior forward Marlon Tabora blasted a highlight-reel goal from outside of the box to help the Georgetown University men’s soccer team earn a 1-1 draw against the University of Denver Pioneers on Sept. 5. Tabora’s 29th-minute strike was the fifth goal of his Georgetown career. The No. 21 Hoyas (1-1-2) entered Monday’s matchup fresh off of a 5-2 win over the Temple University Owls (1-1-1) on Sept. 2.
MEN’S SOCCER | No. 2 Georgetown Plays High Point to Disappointing Draw
First-year forward Jacob Murrell put a header past the Panther goalkeeper for the first goal of his Hoya career. His efforts, however, were not enough to secure a win for the Georgetown men’s soccer team against the High Point Panthers on Aug. 28. The Hoyas struggled to capitalize on their opportunities at the net and drew 1-1. The Hoyas (0-1-1) were clearly the better team from start to finish, but it was still a disappointing result for Georgetown at its home opener.
MEN’S LACROSSE | Watson Leads No. 2 Georgetown To 14-7 Win Over Loyola
The Georgetown men’s lacrosse team wasted little time against Loyola University Maryland on April 19, taking an early 3-0 lead and finishing on top with a dominant 14-7 victory. Senior attacker Dylan Watson led the way for the Hoyas, netting an outstanding 5 goals to bring his Big East-leading season total to 46. No. 2 Georgetown (11-1, 3-0 Big East) came into the matchup red-hot, having won six games in a row, two of which were against ranked opponents.
MEN’S LACROSSE | No. 3 Georgetown Takes Down No. 20 Lehigh, 14-11.
The Georgetown men’s lacrosse team built a large enough early lead to hold off a comeback from Lehigh on March 26. Senior attacker Dylan Watson led the way for the Hoyas with 5 goals, reaching the 100-point milestone for his career. The No. 3 Hoyas (7-1) came into the matchup on a hot streak, having won two games in a row and three of four games against ranked opponents. The No. 20 Lehigh Mountain Hawks (5-3) were also playing well, fresh off of an upset win over No. 13 Army.
Dikembe Mutombo’s Life After Basketball
On Nov. 6, thousands of people gathered in Mbuji-Mayi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Among them stood the man behind the event, easily identifiable from his 7’2” frame and energetic presence. In a black pinstriped suit, he stood, smiling, among the attendees. “It was a blessing of a day,” former NBA star Dikembe Mutombo (SLL ’91) said in an interview with The Hoya.
MEN’S BASKETBALL | Georgetown Comeback Falls Short at Creighton
The Georgetown men’s basketball team mounted a furious comeback attempt at Creighton University on Feb. 14, but ultimately lost 77-88. This marks the Hoyas’ 14th consecutive loss and they have yet to win a game in the Big East conference. Monday’s matchup was the second in a row between Georgetown (6-19, 0-14 Big East) and Creighton (16-8, 8-5 Big East). The Bluejays came out on top 80-66 at Capital One Arena in the previous showdown Feb. 12.
HALFTIME ON THE HiILLTOP: From Basketball Talk to the Lacrosse Season Opener and More
In this semester debut of “Halftime on the Hilltop,” Hoya sports writers reflect on what has been a tumultuous basketball season thus far (to say the least). Demi Pappas (COL ’24) and Caden Koontz (SFS ’23) sit down with Carrie McDonald (COL ’24), author of the column “The Equalizer,” to discuss the absurdity of the disparate fan ban policies for men and women’s basketball, which has occurred during the athletic department’s year-long “Georgetown Women in Sports” campaign.
Georgetown Remains Winless in Conference Play with Loss to UConn
Playing from behind all game, the Georgetown men’s basketball team fell 96-73 to the No. 20/19 University of Connecticut Huskies. Despite first-year guard Aminu Mohammed’s 15 points and 7 rebounds on the night, the Hoyas lost their seventh consecutive game to remain without a win in conference play. UConn (14-4, 5-2 Big East) commanded the paint early in the game, taking a 5-0 lead on two layups and a free throw from its big men.
Georgetown Cruises to NCAA Tournament Victory Over Providence
On Nov. 28, sophomore forward Marlon Tabora led the Georgetown men’s soccer team with three goals and an assist, propelling the Hoyas to a dominant 4-1 victory over the Providence Friars and into the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. Though most Georgetown University students were still away on Thanksgiving break, fans still poured in for the 12 p.m. kickoff to witness a rematch of the 2021 Big East tournament championship thriller in which Georgetown came out on top 2-1.

Down, But Never Out: Hoyas Should Learn to Embrace Underdog Mentality
Entering its fifth year with Head Coach Patrick Ewing (CAS ’85), the Georgetown men’s basketball team is in the process of redefining itself. The Hoyas, in the midst of their longest AP Top 25 drought since 1972, are entering the season with much uncertainty, including the lack of a steady identity. To succeed, Georgetown will have to continue to embrace the same status that propelled them to the 2021 NCAA Tournament as underappreciated overperformers.
Ewing, Iverson Named to NBA 75th Anniversary Team
The NBA released its 75th Anniversary Team Oct. 21, featuring two former Georgetown University basketball team members, Patrick Ewing (CAS ’85) and Allen Iverson. Ewing and Iverson are two of the most dominant stars in Georgetown athletics history. The NBA 75th Anniversary Team, chosen by a panel of current and former NBA players, coaches and members of the media, honors the best 75 players in NBA history in honor of the league’s 75th season.

New to the show is “Rose and Thorn,” a chance for the hosts to share the best and the worst sports moments of the week.
BASEBALL | Georgetown Gets a Walkoff Win Over Creighton
The Georgetown men’s baseball team secured a 3-2 victory over the Creighton Bluejays on April 25, ending a three-game losing streak. The Hoyas hope to keep this newfound winning momentum going as their abbreviated season continues. The series between Creighton (14-18, 6-1 Big East) and Georgetown (4-8, 4-6 Big East) opened with a doubleheader April 23. In the first game, the Bluejays’ Dylan Tebrake held the Hoyas to two hits in a seven-inning shutout.
KOONTZ | Five Takeaways from the Georgetown Men’s Basketball Season
It has been one month since the Georgetown Hoyas fell to the University of Colorado Buffaloes 73-96 in the first round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Now that the dust has settled, here are five takeaways from the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball season: 1. The Hoyas outperformed everyone’s wildest expectations. Big East coaches picked the Hoyas to finish a distant 11th out of 11 teams — well below the DePaul University Blue Demons — Oct. 28.
KOONTZ | Q&A: Ryan Mutombo on His Game, His Goals for Next Season
This past fall, four-star center Ryan Mutombo announced his commitment to play for Georgetown men’s basketball. Mutombo, a dominant high school player, has put up big numbers as a senior, blown past the 1,500-point milestone for his high school career, been named to the First Team All-Region and led the Lovett School Lions to a 19-7 record. The Lions are set to play in the quarterfinals of the Georgia High School Association Class AA State Tournament on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL | Hoyas Come Up Short in Overtime at Seton Hall
The Georgetown women’s basketball team fought its way back from an early deficit and a fourth quarter mired in fouls but eventually fell 79-72 to Seton Hall University in overtime at Walsh Gymnasium on Feb. 18. The defeat by the Seton Hall Pirates (10-6, 8-5 Big East) marks the Hoyas’ (1-12, 1-12 Big East) 11th straight loss. Georgetown started out cold, turning the ball over four times before sophomore forward Graceann Bennett got things going with a layup at the 6:46 mark.
KOONTZ | Hoyas to the MLS: Sean O’Hearn Drafted 38th by Minnesota United FC
Former Georgetown University defender Sean O’Hearn (MSB ’21) was drafted into Major League Soccer on Jan. 21, going 38th overall to the Minnesota United Football Club. Over his three years on the Hilltop, O’Hearn was an incredibly consistent leader in the backline, starting 61 games. The Hoyas were extremely successful with him on the squad, going a blistering 47-10-8, winning three Big East championships and picking up a national title.
KOONTZ | Hoyas to the MLS: Rio Hope-Gund Drafted 19th by Orlando City SC
For senior defender Rio Hope-Gund, leaving Georgetown University soccer won’t involve the same kind of farewell to his teammates as some other Hoyas following their selection in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. Hope-Gund joined senior forward Derek Dodson, eighth overall pick and a fellow Hoya, at the Orlando City Soccer Club. The defender was the second Hoya off of the MLS board, chosen 19th overall. “It is definitely exciting that we got drafted to the same team,” Hope-Gund wrote in an email to The Hoya.
KOONTZ | Hoyas to the MLS: Derek Dodson Drafted 8th by Orlando City SC

This article is the first in a series of profiles on the players drafted from the Georgetown men’s soccer team this year.
Georgetown Comeback Falls Short at Syracuse
The Georgetown men’s basketball team nearly clawed their way back from a big halftime deficit against archrival Syracuse but fell 74-69. The Hoyas have now dropped five straight games. Georgetown versus Syracuse is a historic rivalry. During the broadcast on ESPN, announcers showed clips from some of the greatest games between the two teams, including a slideshow from the classic Georgetown win in 1980.
MEN’S BASKETBALL | Georgetown Stumbles Late, Loses to Butler
It was an all too familiar story for the Georgetown men’s basketball team at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Jan. 6. The Hoyas led the Butler Bulldogs 34-27 at halftime but saw their lead trickle away as the second half wore on and lost 63-55. This marks the fourth time this season that the Hoyas have lost a game they led at halftime. Georgetown (3-7, 1-5 Big East) came into Wednesday’s matchup looking to extend Head Coach Patrick Ewing’s (CAS ’85) hot streak on Butler’s home court.

Big East men’s basketball is back, so it’s time to check in on how Georgetown and each of its conference rivals have performed thus far. Big East basketball teams have played a total of 30 games so far.
Georgetown Picks Up a Season Opening Win Against UMBC
The Georgetown University men’s basketball team earned its first win of the season Nov. 25, defeating University of Maryland-Baltimore County 70-62. This was Patrick Ewing’s (CAS ’85) 50th win as the Hoyas’ head coach. Coach John Thompson Jr.’s legacy loomed large over Wednesday’s matchup, the first since he passed Aug. 30. The game was played on the newly christened John Thompson Jr. Court, and there was a cardboard cutout of Coach Thompson in the McDonough Arena bleachers.
KOONTZ | Scouting Georgetown Basketball’s 2021 Recruiting Class
On Nov. 11, Ryan Mutombo, Tyler Beard, Jordan Riley and Jalin Billingsley signed national letters of intent to play basketball at Georgetown in 2021. This makes the 2021 class Head Coach Patrick Ewing’s (COL ’85) most highly ranked in his four years leading the program.
KOONTZ | Playing Through a Pandemic: How Georgetown Student-Athletes are Adapting to COVID-19
This year has been anything but predictable, and with all fall Big East and Patriot League sports cancelled, Georgetown University student-athletes are finding new ways to stay healthy, motivated and connected to their teams. They are also taking this time to explore new interests away from their respective fields. In March, when Georgetown sent all students home for the year, the Hoya football team got straight to work, meeting daily over Zoom.
KOONTZ | Georgetown Basketball is (Almost) Back!

KOONTZ | What an Aminu Mohammed Commitment Would Mean for Georgetown Basketball
