Professor Daniel Muñoz encourages discussion and disagreement
When Daniel Muñoz taught his first class at UNC, he said he quickly realized the wide variety of perspectives and eagerness to learn that his students brought to their discussions. “I had Trump supporters, and I had a self-identified Communist,” Muñoz said. “So it was really the full wide range of political views in that class.” The course was a gateway class for UNC’s philosophy, politics and economics minor, focused on questions of freedom, rights, equality and prosperity.
Column: There is hope for UNC’s paradoxical struggle with free expression
Opinion Jan 20, 2026, 11:00 PM The definition of free speech on college campuses has been stretched so wide that it has lost shape. For some, it’s the prerogative to debate big, controversial ideas; for others, it’s the ability to confide those same ideas to a trusted friend in hopes that no one overhears. Universities are designed to make diverse thoughts collide and occasionally cause minor emotional bruising, not to constrain students to tiptoe around each other.
'They are watching': Chinese students' already-stifled speech under increased scrutiny by Trump

He related his situation to a prison, where inmates live with the possibility of being watched at any moment.

Review: ‘Stranger Things’ finale highlights the show’s fatal flaw
Lifestyle Assistant University Editor Jan 17, 2026, 6:09 AM The finale of "Stranger Things" was expected to be both Netflix’s and the Duffer brothers’ magnum opus. Since the show's premiere on July 15, 2016, fans, including myself, eagerly waited years on end for the next season to release. After nearly a decade of anticipation, what rises from the ruins of the now destroyed Upside Down is a rushed, disappointing — and frankly, tragic — conclusion that fails its fanbase.

Column: When the (digital) cloud gets too cloudy
Opinion Oct 30, 2025, 10:32 AM On Oct. 20, the internet caught a cold, and half the digital world got sick. Opinion Going to Carolina shaped me; perhaps your alma mater always does. My years at Carolina and my degree from it helped build my career. More importantly, my time on campus brought into my life people, experiences and ideas that I couldn’t have found elsewhere. I am grateful. Guest essay: The former provost’s sunshine lawsuit could go supernova
Opinion Reasons abound to question the validity of former UNC Provost Chris Clemens’ sunshine lawsuit against the University’s volunteer Board of Trustees alleging “ongoing, systemic, and purposeful evasion of North Carolina law” on faculty tenure issues and “a systematic practice of conducting public business in secret.” First, the University’s dozens of lawyers provide legal advice and counsel to the trustees, including complying with state laws on open meetings and public records.
