When you think of the government’s safer streets mission and its ambition to halve knife crime over the next decade, youth workers and youth clubs may not be the first things that come to mind. Yet the youth sector has a vital role to play in reducing crime and keeping children safe, far beyond the remit of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport or the National Youth Strategy alone.

How the youth sector helps reduce violence
This winter, we’ll publish guidance, with evidence-based recommendations, on the role of the youth sector in reducing violence. The first of three emerging insights from this work is around universal provision. Local youth clubs, though open access, are often attended by children vulnerable to violence, including those excluded from school or supported by social workers. Black children, who are disproportionately affected by violence, are also more likely to attend.

HP Elite Dragonfly G4 Review
HP’s Elite Dragonfly G4 is one of the latest piece of craftwork in the tech conglomerate’s latest collection of laptops. At first glance, it’s gleaming, compact frame is certainly pretty to look at as far as computers go. It’s about the size it needs to be; not too small that it resembles a tablet with a keyboard but not too big that transporting it from place to place is a hassle.

E-WIN Flash XL Size Series Ergonomic Computer Gaming Office Chair Review
Let’s face it: as gamers, we fancy ourselves royalty. Kings and queens if you will. I mean you can’t spend thousands of hours vanquishing foes and saving helpless NPCs without gaining some imaginary accolades and a sense of confidence difficult to replicate in the outside world. As the self-anointed Kings, Queens, Princes, Princesses, and other miscellaneous noblemen, we need thrones to sit upon while we attend to our essential royal duties.

Early Pioneers: Mrs. Olive Byrne - The First White Woman of Oceana
The first white lady to settle in the unbroken wilderness of Oceana County was Mrs. Olive Byrne in 1849, preceding the well-known Dr. Thomas Phillips by about six weeks. Byrne was born in Middlebury, Vermont in 1828, and in 1845 she married a man named Chauncey Clements. Together the two of them relocated to Oceana where they lived only about two miles from Phillips’ family in Claybanks. In fact, at a distance of two miles, the Phillips were the closest neighbors the Clements had.
A tragic end for the Lamont
Some tragedies are tragic for the simple loss of life in a struggle against insurmountable odds. Others are still more sad because they simply didn’t need to happen. The sinking of the Lamont falls into the latter category. Hartwick and Tuller summarize the sad turn of events in their book “Oceana County Pioneers and Business Men of To-Day.” I will share with you a bit of what they have written.
JACKSON: The first inmate Oceana delivered to a state prison
An “incident” occurring on May 23, 1861 was immortalized forever when Hartwick and Tuller saw fit to record it in their book, “Oceana County Pioneers and Business Men of To-Day.” Many “incidents” are recorded in this book, but this one happens to involve a man named Frank Theis, “the first inmate of States prison furnished by Oceana County.” Although the events of May 23 may be considered a precursor, for they took place not in Oceana but instead in Lincoln.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery Celebrates 5th Anniversary
Magical Milestones Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is celebrating some very impressive milestones they have reached over the past five years of being on the app store. This 5th anniversary event is meant to commemorate the esteemed RPG accumulating 78 billion minutes of playtime and counting, along with the casting of 662.5 million spells, the earning of 2.2 trillion house points, and the playing of over 552 million exhilarating quidditch matches.
LOCAL LORE: West Michigan's tributaries
A number of weeks back I mentioned we are done discussing Charles W. Jay. Truthfully, I don’t think we will ever be “done” with Charles W. Jay. He provides too large a degree of interesting and unique insight into the pioneering days of our county for us to be “done” with him. What I meant was that we are instead done covering his journey to, and early perceptions of, Oceana.
Local Lore: Good health in Pentwater
In 1890, there was a book published called, “Oceana County Pioneers and Business Men of To-day,” written by a man named Louis M. Hartwick. In reading the chapter of the book that deals with Pentwater’s history, Mr. Hartwick’s name is one that crops up quite a lot. He was, evidently, the proprietor of the paper in 1885, the president of the Common Council of the village of Pentwater in 1888 and a member of the committee that established the first water works in that same year.
David Richards - A colorful character from Shelby’s past
These days, and especially during the summer months, many citizens of Oceana enjoy a leisurely stroll or a bike ride along the old rail trail in their free time. Of course, back in the late 1800s, instead of a paved road there was an actual track, and the route was frequently used for leisure and business alike. If you were alive in those days and boarding the train for any reason at all in Shelby, there is a good chance you would have encountered a very interesting character named David Richards.
Flavius J. Littlejohn - Oceana’s First Judge
The name Flavius J. Littlejohn may be familiar to many of us spread across this Great Lakes State, especially for those of us with a particular interest in what the land was like before the appearance of white settlers. If you are familiar with the name of Littlejohn, it is likely through his book, “Legends of Michigan and the Old North West” in which he relates several tales told by Native Americans dating back far before our own time.
Local Lore: Temperance in Pentwater
In the late 1800s, a strong temperance movement had sprung up in Chicago and begun to spread throughout the Northern states. According to Hartwick and Tuller’s book, “Oceana County Pioneers and Business Men of To-Day,” the movement began picking up steam in Pentwater in the Spring of 1874, as nearly 100 ladies formed a society determined to end the sale of alcoholic beverages in the area.

Rumble Heroes Review
Rumble On Assemble a team, gather resources, and fight your way through hoards of a variety of menacing enemies in PlayHard.Lab‘s new addicting, role-playing project, Rumble Heroes. The game is a top down, casual, action-packed RPG in which the sole princess of your kingdom has been kidnapped. Consequently, it is up to you to assemble a formidable team to travel through monster-laden lands to save her while also reconstructing your starting village.
Best Offline Android Games
The Best Offline Android Games Believe it or not, video games were not always designed to be enjoyed in an online setting. Before the recent advent of the internet and online play, way back in the beginnings of prehistoric society, people played games in offline, single-player solitude. Despite the near ubiquity of internet, especially on mobile devices where cellular data is an option, game designers understand that offline play is still in high demand.
Local Lore: Charles W. Jay in West Michigan: Part 5
Over the past couple weeks, we have been getting an inside look at the infantile state of Oceana County through the eyes of a prominent, early 19th century newspaper writer, Charles W. Jay.
Local Lore: Charles W. Jay in West Michigan: Part 2
Charles W. Jay’s journey from New Jersey to Benona involved several trains, a ferry and a vehicle. One may be forgiven for assuming it sounds like a boring read. So many connections in the modern era would be a nightmare, but things moved a bit slower in 1871. Not to mention, Jay’s treatment of the event is often poetic, humorously sarcastic and sometimes unintentionally funny due to the dated nature of the material.
Local Lore: The Dumaw Creek Native American site
Among the exhibits of Native American artifacts on display at the Pentwater Historical Society Museum there is a map which reveals where many of the items were discovered. If you examine this map, you may notice several items of interest emerging from Dumaw Creek, a tributary of the Pentwater River which lies northeast of the village. As it turns out, this location was the site of a 17th century Native American Village, complete with its own cemetery.
Local Lore: The Times vs. The Journal
From the time the Oceana County Journal was first issued at Hart, a bitter rivalry began to be manifested between that paper and the Oceana Times. (Hartwick & Tuller, 1890, p. 67) The above quotation, coming of course from Hartwick and Tuller’s “Oceana County Pioneers and Business Men of To-Day,” seems like a bit of an understatement given the story I am about to tell you. And what better to fan the flames of a business rivalry than a little bit of politics? Let us set the scene.
Local Lore: Early pioneers: Andrew Brady
I have written before about the hardships of some of the early pioneers in our county, and particularly about Lorenzo D. Eaton, who overcame many hardships for his family until he was finally drowned in 1876. Today I would like to discuss the life of another early pioneer, one who crossed paths with Eaton, and his name is Andrew Brady. Hailing from Norway, Brady’s whole family pulled up roots and relocated to Michigan 1850 when he, himself, was only 14 years old.
Local Lore: O.P. Dilock AKA Charles W. Jay
Though the pages of Hartwick and Tuller’s “Oceana County Pioneers and Business Men of To-Day” are littered with the stories of many brave men, well, many of their stories are the same. They came to Oceana, built or bought a sawmill, became a postmaster, established a large farm, etc. Though there is one man who’s story stands out quite starkly from his peers on the printed pages that surround him, a man named Charles W. Jay. Charles W.
Local Lore: Toledo, Ohio, which is not in Michigan
Being from Florida, there are certain aspects of Michigander life that I do not personally partake in, but rather watch with great enthusiasm from the sidelines, such as the Michigan-Ohio rivalry. With a father from Michigan and a mother from Ohio, this rivalry has been a constant source of entertainment my whole life, like the ceaselessly airing reruns of your favorite sitcom.
Local Lore: The limestone beds of Kitch-iti-kipi
I have talked previously about the formation of the Great Lakes in this column and a little bit of that information is necessary for this article to make sense. So, allow me to recap. As many of you may or may not know, the area that we now call Michigan was once a seabed.
Local Lore: The Mercury
The pages of Pentwater’s history are speckled with maritime disasters, many of which have occurred in the month of November, probably the result of the infamous November Gales, which our region is known for. These days the lumber boom is over, our ships are safer, and weather forecasting technology is much more advanced.
Local Lore: The naming of Navel Hill
There is apparently, somewhere between Hart and Shelby, a hill which was officially named Navel Hill. It is mentioned in Hartwick and Tuller’s book “Oceana County Pioneers and Business Men of To-day,” although my attempts to locate this hill exactly online have proved fruitless. Maybe some Oceana residents who have been here longer than I have will know where it is, although the exact location of this hill is not what I am interested in today. Instead, I want to tell you how it got its name.
Local Lore: The earliest Pentwater winter
There exists a book detailing a pretty exhaustive history of the early days of Pentwater put together by Florence R. Schrumpf, simply titled “Pentwater 1853 – 1942.” The book covers a span of time starting with the arrival of Andrew Rector and E.R. Cobb in 1853 up until 1942. It draws from a slew of different texts as well as first person accounts from the descendants of different settlers.
Local Lore: The Native American Trail Marker Trees
Everyone who has spent any time outdoors has probably encountered a memorable looking tree once or twice, perhaps one with an interesting bend or a twist to it. However, a tree with a sharp 90 degree bend would probably seem odd to even the most experienced woodsman. Now imagine how strange it would be to find a tree with not one, but two such bends. And yet trees like this are scattered all over our country and, oddly enough, with bends that follow a similar pattern.
Local Lore: Oceana’s early pioneers: Walter H. Churchill
If you’ve been reading since March, when I covered how our towns and villages got their names, you may remember that I said Shelby was referred to as Churchill Corners for a spell. It was so called in reference to one of the earliest settlers in the area and the town’s first Postmaster, a man named Walter H. Churchill. But who was this Churchill fellow?
Local Lore: A courtroom brawl
Returning again to the pages of “Oceana County Pioneers and Business Men of To-Day” by L.M. Hartwick and W.H. Tuller, I bring to you another story regarding humorous courtroom happenings in Pentwater. This invaluable book seems to be full of them, probably largely due to Hartwick’s career as an attorney during the early days of Pentwater. The stars of this particular story are two attorneys named W. E. Ambler and R.M. Montgomery.
