Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Reporting local news for the Milan Mirror-Exchange small-town newspaper in Milan, TN.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! I own two.

How is social media changing news?

News is faster and at times more false now than ever before. It's never been more important for journalists to remain committed to accuracy.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent, easily!

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A journalist must be reliable, truthful, persistent and undeterred by danger.

Why did you become a journalist?

To find truth and bring people together through sharing meaningful stories.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Sadly, my high school didn't have a student newspaper. I was very involved as the news editor at my college newspaper MTSU Sidelines, though.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I really enjoyed writing a feature story about a veteran in Milan, Tennessee, who worked on nuclear-armed ICBMs during the Cold War.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Get out there and gather experience in the field. It doesn't take a job title to do good journalism. Be civically engaged and set an example.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I like AP News, Reuters and The Washington Post.
