Artificial intelligence in soil science: Where do we go now?
AI artificial intelligence ANN artificial neural networks CNN convolutional neural networks GAN generative adversarial network RNN recurrent neural network SOC soil organic carbon 1 BACKGROUND Soil is complex to measure, understand, visualize, and communicate. In this context, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamental for deciphering patterns within vast datasets (Padarian et al., 2020).
Network‐based approaches for soil health research and extension programming in North Dakota, USA
Abstract Farmer adoption of practices to build soil health can be enhanced using a knowledge network supported by programs and resources that incorporate technical, social and experiential learning pathways. University Extension plays a critical role in building and supporting the knowledge network by serving as (a) a boundary organization to create space for conversations to occur, (b) network manager to facilitate learning and (c) builder of social capital to encourage trust in the network.
Soil Health Minute: Cover crops with sunflower
Cover crops growing with a sunflower crop. (Abbey Wick/Special to Agweek) By Abbey Wick and Caley Gasch on Aug 20, 2017 at 7:30 a.m. Farmers are working on fitting cover crops into every phase of their rotation to achieve multiple goals. One practice, which is of interest but is not well evaluated, is growing cover crops along with sunflower.
Soil Health Minute: Evaluating soils when building soil heal...
Soil health indicators compared across tillage system treatments. Aggregate stability and nodule counts were different across treatments. Microbial properties are too variable to differentiate across soil management systems. By Abbey Wick and Caley Gasch, NDSU Soil Health Today at 11:42 a.m. There are many soil health tests offered by commercial laboratories, but there are several challenges associated with sampling effectively.
Soil Health Minute: Cover crops with sunflower
• Competition with weeds in a crop where herbicide options are limited. As farmers try this approach on test strips, we are helping to evaluate the practice. This year, we are working with farmers in southeastern North Dakota to learn more about how planting a cover crop mix at the same time as sunflower can help and/or hurt the system.
Evaluating soil health
The single best quantitative method for monitoring soil health is a measure of aggregation because it represents all the good things happening in a healthy soil.
