Youngsters praised for their behaviour at new pump track
YOUNGSTERS have been praised for their behaviour at a town-s new pump track. Controversial proposals for a skate park, caf\xC3 and pump track at Dunbar-s Lochend Woods were given the go-ahead in October last year. At that time, concerns were raised that the site was -in a secluded area where young people congregate to drink, take drugs and make fires etc, and the proposals would exacerbate these anti-social behaviour matters-.

Local opinion: Is Trump a Fascist?
The following is the opinion and analysis of the writer: A number of your letter writers have complained about others using the term “fascist.” Due to its use since WWII, labeling someone as a fascist has taken on the air of an insult. In response, I have engaged in this effort to see if labeling Donald Trump and his supporters as modern-day fascists can be justified. George Orwell noted in 1944 that the term had been used to denigrate diverse positions.

Letter: Re: the Aug. 10. article “Tucson speaks out: Aug. 10 letters of the day”
John A. Evans engages in a classic political ploy of citing a fact or two and drawing the wrong conclusion. He states that "slavery and segregation were entirely controlled and promoted by the Solid Democrat South." Of course, this is true - BEFORE WWII. Starting with Truman's integration of the army the segregationist wing of the Democratic party fled to the Republican party where they were warmly welcomed. He also states that "Republicans were the heroes of desegregation!" This is false.

Letter: County Attorney
I see the local race for County Attorney has attracted a lot of attention. This appears to be due to the very different views of the role of a County Attorney. Barbara LaWall's view of justice appeared to be to provide vengeance for victims. Laura Conover's view appears to be to minimize future criminal activity. Faux Democrat Mike Jette appears to share LaWall's view of the office. The choice seems clear. Do you want the County Attorney to be an advocate for vengeance or for a better society?
Letter: RTA Next
Rex Scott asks us all to work together to make RTA Next happen. I've got news for Rex. It ain't gonna happen. I live in Tucson. The RTA has been a scam for those of us who live in Tucson. Marana and Vale get the roads and we pay for them. There's an old saying. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I won't be fooled again. I cannot imagine how RTA Next could be configured to win my vote. I will be voting against it and encouraging my fellow Tucsonans to do the same.

Letter: Re: the April 19. article “Tucson Speaks Out: April 19 letters of the day”
Mary Ann Starman dose a fine job of summarizing the Fox News view of Trump's hush money trial. Unfortunately, there are too many things wrong with this screed to address in a 150 word letter. Instead, I'd like to ask Ms. Starman three questions. (1) Have you ever listened to the things Trump says or do you just listen to what Fox News gives you? (2) Do you really think that no Judge who's a registered Democrat can give Trump a fair and impartial trial?
Letter: Re: the April 17. article “Letter: Consider the alternative”
Roger Ingersoll says that he "will most likely vote for Trump in November because, despite his many faults, he is soooooo much better than the alternative,". I would greatly appreciate Mr. Ingersoll explaining to me why a known criminal is soooooo much better than Nicki Haley. Or Ron Desantis. Or Mitt Romney. Or Liz Chaney. Or any of the other highly qualified, truly conservative Republicans out there. Why is his party choosing a morally and ethically bankrupt criminal as it's candidate?
Letter: Political Endorcements
We're now in the season of political endorsements and I'm concerned about the behavior of public service unions. It seems clear that the endorsement by Teacher Unions of Democrats has contributed to Conservative disdain for educators. And the endorsement of Republicans by Law Enforcement unions has contributed to Liberal distrust of the police. Public Service union members serve the entire public regardless of their political leanings.
Letter: Trump and Ukraine
Recent letter writers have implied that because Putin did not invade Ukraine during Trump’s time in office that Putin was afraid of Trump’ Presidency. I believe the facts lead to a different conclusion. The Russians bailed Trump out of one of his bankruptcies and helped him get elected. Putin believed he could be counted on to help with the invasion of Ukraine. Remember that Trump met with Putin with only Putin’s translator present. This is probably when Putin requested Trump’s help.
Letter: November 22
On November 22, 1963 I was sitting in my eighth grade English class when the principal came on the intercom to announce that President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas Texas. I remember very distinctly that some of the other kids began to cheer. I suspect that those kids today are Trump supporters. Steven Brown Midtown Disclaimer: As submitted to the Arizona Daily Star. How to turn an outbuilding into a money making machine
Homeowners often can rake in a small fortune by turning their garden sheds or underutilised outbuildings into a micro business. This can comprise anything to bring in cash, from bed and breakfast establishments, to photography or art studios or tool rental shops. The time, money and effort needed to invest in your outbuilding will largely depend on the kind of building and what you want to use it for.
Letter: Today in history
One hundred years ago today (November 8) Adolph Hitler led roughly 2,000 of his supporters in the now famous “Beer Hall Putsch”. The coup attempt failed. Hitler was arrested and sentenced to 5 years in prison. Released after one year, he went on to be elected Chancelor. I think we all know how that worked out for the German people. On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump led a failed coup. He would have been there in person if it hadn’t been for the Secret Service.
Letter: Federal spending
I see that Congressman Juan Ciscomani is the proud co-sponsor of H.R. 5530: the “VA Emergency Transportation Access Act.” In his article supporting his bill he cites the needs of veterans and the benefits his bill will provide. There is, however, one glaring hole in his argument. How does he plan to pay for this bill? Does he want to put it on the credit card? Does he propose cutting programs that serve Democratic voters? Is he willing to support a tax increase?
Letter: Compromise
Compromise is at the heart of American Democracy. If the founders in 1787 had not agreed to compromise their fervently held beliefs, there would be no United States of America. For one shining moment last week I thought that compromise would once again preserve the union. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case. The ouster of Kevin McCarthy because he had the temerity to compromise with Democrats is a bad sign.
Local opinion: The reality of our political system
The following is the opinion and analysis of the writer: Back in March Sen. Justine Wadsack tweeted the following: “Those who didn’t vote for me lost. Those who did vote for me won. So I am going to be the champion for those who voted for me, and clearly, those who lost have plenty of other senators in Pima who will listen to them. Welcome to politics.” This and similar tweets prompted many to complain. In reality, she was simply saying the quiet part out loud.
Letter: Trump vs Hitler
Letter-writer David Jeffries is disturbed that so many equate Donald Trump to Adolph Hitler. While it is true Trump has not overtly called for violence against Americans, the comparison is based on more than a dislike of Trump’s personality or policies. As a young man I read William Shirer’s “Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”. The behavior of today’s Republican party is eerily reminiscent of Shirer’s descriptions of the behavior of the German National Socialist Party (Nazi party).
Letter: Hatemongering in the legislature
Regarding SB1102, Rep. Joseph Chapilk posted the following to Twitter: "Calling this “Transportation Funding” is just an attempt by a far left and feckless Hobbs to push a Trojan Horse into our cities unleashing anti-motorists policies and stripping away at our freedom of movement. Hobbs wants us to bend the knee to the climate alarmist cult and I will stand and fight this. " I have two questions. 1) This tweet drips with distain and hatred for those who disagree with him.
Letter: MAGA facts
Today (6/17) you published two letters from MAGA people whose arguments are based on falsehoods. David Garcia attempts to equate Trump’s handling of classified documents to Clinton’s and Biden’s. Anyone who follows the news, even credible Fox journalists like Bret Baer, knows that there is no comparison. Amanda Blakely states four distinct falsehoods in her defense of MAGA violence. Again, following the news makes this clear. I would refute these falsehoods, but why bother.
George Will got it wrong.
In today's edition (May 25) you printed an opinion piece by George Will that contained the following statement. " A life that is human begins at conception. This is a tenet not of abstruse theology but of elementary biology. " This is not true. In fact I will go so far as to say it's a lie. Biology says nothing at all about when things begin. It is true that many Biologists will say that a human life begins at conception, but they are being guided in their thinking by their own beliefs.

Letter: Normal vs crazy
By Steven Brown, Midtown "The dividing line in America is no longer between right or left. The choice is between normal or crazy," - Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders. M&A Report 2023: Bahrain
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have seen a rise in consolidation as pandemic restrictions have been eased, including corporate strategic M&A transactions in Bahrain, particularly in the banking sector. Kuwait Finance House (KFH) completed its acquisition of Ahli United Bank (AUB) in October 2022 and consequently created one of the largest banks in the GCC. More than 97% of AUB share acceptances were received, surpassing the minimum requirement of 90% for squeeze-out.

A MAN'S body has been found on a beach near Longniddry. Police officers are investigating after the body was found on Friday morning. The area was cordoned off and an investigation has now been launched. Re: the Nov. 17. article "Letters to the Editor: Nov. 17"
You have now run three letters noting the Florida vote count was quick and ours was slow. All three seem to imply that this is a problem. Mark Morel thinks this is wrong and wants an explanation. Scott Langpap blames Katie Hobbs and also wants an explanation. I'm happy to oblige. We here in Arizona have different rules. Rules created by our Republican legislature. Katie Hobbs is only enforcing our rules, which are quite different than the rules in Florida. And it doesn't matter how long it takes.
What are your current obligations under the Privacy Act?
After almost 10 million Optus customers and around four million Medibank members were potentially affected by recent data hacks, there is talk of class actions being launched, either for negligence or breach of privacy. The government has also announced changes to the Privacy Act including significantly higher fines for serious privacy breaches, and additional powers for the information commissioner.
Dems' EV push will harm auto shops"
Paula Martin is concerned for all the auto shops that will loose business as we transition from gas to electric vehicles. When I moved to Tucson in 1972 I-10 was a new highway. It was not completed through the towns of Wilcox and Benson. The reason was that once the highway was completed businesses in those towns would die, something the residents of those towns feared. Well, the highway was completed and many of the businesses folded.
Letter: Comics?

Changes in the Star
You have published many letters from readers who are upset with recent changes to the Star. Most seem to believe the decision was made here in Tucson. At least two letters point out that, in fact, the decision was made by Lee Enterprises, an Iowa company. I don't believe anyone at the Star had a say in these changes. So, complaining to the Star staff is pointless. I encourage all letter writers to do what I did and complain directly to Lee Enterprises. Here's how. Google Lee Enterprises.
