The Jet-Set Age Enters Historical Fiction - Women Writers, Women's Books
By Camille Di Maio Like most historical fiction authors, the idea for a story strikes when I’m not looking for it and plants itself in my imagination, growing taller than other notions until towering over the rest and demanding attention. This was the case when I first had the idea for COME FLY WITH ME. It was a hot summer day in Austin and I was browsing the bargain section of famed indie Book People. I came across a non-fiction book about jet setting and it was like lightning had struck.
The Mary Reader
After her mom passed away, Jennalyn was in the midst of moving, adjusting to life with a new baby, and helping her husband, Joel, work toward his dream job. At the time, she thought she’d processed her mother’s death, but only now that Jennalyn has two small children, a lovely new home, and a husband who is always working does she feel the full impact of what she has lost.
THE FIRST EMMA by Camille Di Maio
Di Maio’s (The Beautiful Strangers, 2019, etc.) take on a shocking American drama pleasantly blends romance and historical fiction inspired by the true story of a Texas brewing tycoon and his wife. The year is 1942, and Americans are suffering from the effects of World War II. Nineteen-year-old Mabel Hartley has lost both of her brothers overseas, and her father—widowed, alcoholic, and deeply depressed—can’t support her, so she lives on her own and works as a secretary in Baltimore.

The Beautiful Strangers
Review by Magdalena J, Reviewer Last updated on 05 Mar 2019 I Recommend This Book Maybe The Beautiful Stranger is a perfect feel-good book. Perfect if you like ghost stories, love stories, and old Hollywood movies. As a big fan of the movie Some Like it Hot was I thrilled that the setting of the book took place at Hotel del Coronado where the movie is being filmed. Which meant that movie stars like Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and last, but not least, Marilyn Monore.

My Rating: TBR (Pre-Ordered) A broken man. A twist of fate. A second chance. From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Mistletoe Promise and The Walk comes the first novel in a riveting new trilogy that explores the tantalizing question: What if you could start over? Chicago celebrity, Charles James can’t shake the nightmare that wakes him each night. He sees himself walking down a long, broken highway the sides of which are lit in flames. Where is he going? Why is he walking?
The Distracted Writer
It is always my intention to turn off wi-fi when I write. It has yet to happen. What if I need to look something up? After all, I write historical fiction and there is always a fact to check, a photo to look at, a map to consider. I often wonder how people wrote before the internet. How could I get to know the streets of Liverpool without being able to fly there? The other day, I used the word “cushy” in a sentence, but it felt historically inaccurate. And a little bit easy.
