Cari Shane

Based in the Washington DC area, Cari Shane, a former television and radio reporter, is a journalist and 21st Century Media Strategist specializing in Social Media Journalism, Pitch and Press Release Angle Development and Strategic Communications Consulting. As a journalist, she writes on an eclectic array of subjects for a variety of publications including the Huffington Post, Washington Post Magazine & Newspaper, Bethesda Magazine, MYBusiness Magazine, Home & Design and more. She is also a contributing essayist in the anthology, Knowing Pains: Women on Love, Sex and Work in their 40s. Cari’s contribution to the book, an essay entitled, “Finding Friendship at Forty,” landed her an interview on the Today Show. As a media strategist, from a journalistic POV Cari creates social media campaigns and PR strategies.

As a media strategist, Cari creates social media campaigns and PR strategies from a journalistic POV. In 2011, with marketing consulting and business partner, Julie Schumacher, Cari founded the /'sas∙s'ē/ agency, a boutique firm that creates a strategic matrix by integrating cutting edge PR, marketing and social media concepts to establish a platform for growth. Five years later, Cari sold her part of the business to her former partner.

Cari began her career in print media (The Poughkeepsie Journal) and radio in Poughkeepsie, NY and worked for many years as an anchor and reporter in Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut. Before her return to print journalism ten years ago, Cari was in front of the camera working as a television reporter and anchor at the NBC affiliate in Hartford. Prior to that, she was a features reporter for the ABC affiliate in the Roanoke/Lynchburg, Virginia, a news writer for Philadelphia’s Fox station and a weekend anchor at Lancaster, Pennsylvania’s NBC affiliate. In the 90’s, Cari ran a successful media-tour company representing a variety of well-known national clients including Hunts, General Foods, Accutane and TJ Maxx. Cari not only created and generated the media campaigns for her clients, placing their products on national and local news programs, but also acted as spokesperson for several of her national media campaigns.

Cari’s dream as a child was to be like Jane Goodall, sitting in the forest among the chimps, or Margaret Mead, observing the natives in Samoa. As a mother of three, Cari can do neither, so instead she blends into the culture around her and writes about what she sees. Her observations can be found in her published pieces, on-line and in print.

A graduate of Vassar College and a Manhattan native, Cari currently lives in a hip, transitional neighborhood in Washington, D.C. where she tutors inner city elementary school children at her local school. She is raising two rescue puppies as well as "being there" for her three grown children (do they ever really grow up?). Cari also sits on the board of the Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce and is the treasurer of FOND (Friends of NoMa Dogs), a 503-c created to establish a dog park in her neighborhood. Finishing her first novel, A Winter’s Spring, Cari is working on her second, You Don’t Have to Jump.
