What was your first job as a journalist?
Reporter at Southend Evening Echo in Essex
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Learned to type at school on one. Only guy in a classroom of girls.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Cal McCaffrey - State of Play BBC TV series from 2003, played by the brilliant John Simm. He nailed it
What's your favorite social network?
The pub
Why did you become a journalist?
I liked writing, I liked news, I liked being nosey, I liked finding out stuff. That narrowed down my options.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Article about elderly woman billed a fortune for water bill. She claimed there was something wrong with pipe. Firm said no. We proved it was.
What's your favorite drink?
Tea, milk, one sugar thanks for offering. If you'd like to tip a bit of whiskey in when I'm not looking, that'd be lovely...
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
During work time - either at court, at an inquest, at a police station or at a crime scene

Private Eye
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That it is somehow 'glamorous' - there's very little that is glamorous about crime
