Can Truth Survive in Today’s Political Landscape?
Two major themes permeate the 2024 election: “lies” and “authenticity.” Each party accuses the other of lies and promotes its candidate as “authentic.” The prevalence of these themes reveals a much deeper issue: the ability of people to create identity and reshape the meaning of truth. Over the past 50 years, Democrats, who prided themselves as the party of the working class and common people, became dominated by their university-educated elite.

Pope Francis Synod Analysis
As we continue examining the Synod on Synodality, it is apparent there are still many unresolved questions about Pope Francis’ intentions and goals that have animated this process. In part I, we saw that different understandings of the meaning of the language that is being used have resulted in very different perceptions of the direction in which the Synod is intended to move the Church. In Part II of our analysis, we will explore this further.

This election, the way to select the best choice for office is to focus less on individual personalities and more on the path on which the philosophies of each of the candidates and their fellow travelers will cause us to journey. Continuing our effort to feature different perspectives on the best choice in the upcoming U.S. election.
'Tithing' or 'reserve funds'? The state shouldn't try to interpret the language of faith-based institutions
"Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor's and to God the things that are God's," so Jesus famously told people trying to trap him with a loaded political question. Christians and other believers have sought to follow this injunction in the centuries since His pronouncement, deferring to the state those things which are the legitimate province of government, while making it a first priority to render to God what is God's, as the source and summit of all things.

Eliminating the clergy exemption can have unintended consequences Original
When another instance of horrific child abuse is discovered to have gone undetected or unreported for years, it's understandable to see an immediate public response in favor of mandatory reporting. This was the understandable reaction to a case involving an abusive father in a Latter-day Saint congregation in Arizona. This week, in a ruling related to the case, the Arizona Supreme Court upheld priest-penitent privilege laws.

Is It Time for a Paradigm Shift in Mental Health? We’ve tried so hard to decrease depression, anxiety and suicide. And the numbers keep going up. Is it time to consider even more fundamental shifts in our approach? The Supreme Court’s Textualist Temptation The Supreme Court’s much-anticipated decision in Bostock v Clayton County may in fact tell us more about how courts decide what law is than what law says.
Forgetting the Connection Between Law and Morality
What is the difference between the legal and the ethical or moral realm? Ethics and philosophy have been studied forever. Some consider law the world’s second oldest profession (which a few disparagingly suggest is directly related to the oldest profession). In fact, even calling oneself a catholic lawyer requires a good deal of hubris these days. I am reminded of the story of St. Peter, the lawyer, and the Pope, which perhaps some of you know.
