The Ghosts of Inch Beach
Like most writers I know, I love research. There’s nothing quite like being there, and that lesson was drilled home in September of 2024 when I spent a month traveling Ireland for my work in progress. It was to be the fourth book in my County Kerry series and I just didn’t have my finger on the pulse of the story.
Our September Picks Are Here
Get ready to laugh in this genre-bending debut! Evie Sage accepts a job working for Rennedawn’s notorious Villain in order to support her ailing family — and she thinks that’s the end of it. But she’s crushing on her boss and trying to figure out who’s sabotaging his work. “This book ticks a great many boxes: humor, horror, fantasy, romance.” — Kat S, Speculative Fiction Buyer
Murder at an Irish Bakery
Review by Kristina A, Reviewer Last updated on 23 Mar 2023 Murder at an Irish Bakery by Carlene O’Connor takes us to Kilbane, Ireland where a baking competition is being filmed in the old flour mill that houses the local bakery. Garda Siobhan O’Sullivan, who has a legendary sweet tooth, is thrilled that she is one of the officers handling crowd control. At the end of the first timed bake, the curtains are pulled back and a legendary chef is dead.
Ascension
Nicholas Binge. Riverhead, $27 (352p) ISBN 978-0-593-53958-3 The incredible premise of this superlative science fiction thriller from Binge (Professor Everywhere) gains credibility through the adroit presentation of the main narrative through letters and the pitch-perfect characterization of the brilliant lead, Harold Tunmore, who’s haunted by a fatal error caused by his own arrogance. Harold, a British surgical consultant turned physicist, disappeared in 1990, leaving his family bereft.
Sunsetter
Curtis LeBlanc. ECW, $17.95 trade paper (240p) ISBN 978-1-77041-690-1 Poet LeBlanc (Little Wild) makes his fiction debut with a taut thriller set over three days in the Canadian prairie town of Perron, which has been in decline since the end of the oil boom. On the opening afternoon of the Sunsetter rodeo, Dallan Dermott and his best buddy, Brooks, check out a place to buy drugs in the midway, watch the first chuck wagon races of the weekend, and drink beer.
Review | NetGalley
Review by Jill N, Reviewer Last updated on 07 Nov 2022 Dimpna WIlde is a veterinarian, just like her father. She grew up in a charming town in Ireland called Dingle, and when she grew up, she left and didn’t come back. She had her reasons for that. And now she has reasons for heading back home. When things went bad in Dublin, she held on there as long as she could.
NO STRANGERS HERE
by Carlene O'Connor ‧ Ireland's County Kerry provides the backdrop for O’Connor’s compelling series kickoff. DI Cormac O’Brien, who’s new to Dingle, must depend on the locals for insight when the body of racehorse owner Johnny O’Reilly is found on a beach along with 69 black stones spelling out the words "Last Dance." O'Reilly was 69 years old, too. DS Neely provides Cormac with background on Last Dance, one of O’Reilly’s horses that was killed in a road accident more than 25 years earlier.
Christmas Scarf Murder
Review by Kristina A, Reviewer Last updated on 15 Sep 2022 Christmas Scarf Murder by Carlene O’Connor, Maddie Day, and Peggy Ehrhart contains three cute holiday themed cozy mysteries. All three stories are well-written and fit nicely into their respective series. I like how the Christmas scarf theme fit into each story. I thought Maddie Day had a clever method of murder. I wish there had been more investigating by Robbie Jordan in Scarfed Down.
Murder in Connemara
Tara Meehan is excited. She is getting ready to open her store, as long as the city sends her permit. After leaving New York City and moving to Ireland, she is ready to take her interior design skills and open up her shop of architectural salvage and reclaimed treasures. She’s been working hard for weeks, getting everything set up, and she feels like she’s earned a day off exploring the countryside. Having just learned how to drive, she takes her new Jeep and heads for the hills.
Murder in Connemara
Review by Kristina A, Reviewer Last updated on 11 Sep 2021 My Recommendation Murder in Connemara by Carlene O’Connor is the 2nd A Home to Ireland Mystery. It can be read as a standalone, but I believe readers will have a better understanding of Tara if they read Murder in Galway first. I enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of Ireland, the architecture, and the items in Tara’s shop. The author really brought the Irish countryside to life for me.
Murder in an Irish Bookshop
Review by Jill N, Reviewer Last updated on 25 Feb 2021 My Recommendation This is a big week for Siobhan O’Sullivan. Not only do they have a new garda officer joining them in Kilbane, there is also a new bookshop opening in town, and it’s her 29th birthday. And as much as she’s excited about spending her birthday with her 5 brothers and sisters and fiance Macdara Flannery, she is also looking forward to helping train new garda Aretta Dabiri, who was born in Nigeria.
MURDER AT AN IRISH CHRISTMAS
Caroline Lennon's performance will have listeners imagining a Christmas tree decorated with items from nature--like the O'Sullivan family's. They are spending Christmas in West Cork with the family of renowned orchestra conductor Enda Elliot. When Siobhán discovers Enda dead under a harp, she and her fiancé, fellow Garda officer Macdara Flannery, end up on the case, which they rush to conclude before Christmas arrives.
Murder at an Irish Christmas
Review by Jill N, Reviewer Last updated on 05 Nov 2020 My Recommendation Siobhan O’Sullivan is looking forward to a lovely, peaceful Christmas with her younger siblings. Although they won’t be home this year as usual, they will get to be in West Cork, close to the sea. There, they will be getting to know the family of James’ fiancee Elise Elliot and enjoying the concert put on by her grandfather.
Away With the Fairies
Once upon a time there was a colleen (young girl) by the name of Mary Ann O’Rawe. She was born in Ballymena, Northern Ireland. For those of you who are into hunky Irish actors, that’s County Antrim, where Liam Neeson hails from. I never got to meet Mary Ann O’Rawe, but she was my maternal great-grandmother. However, one of her childhood stories has lived with me—one that my sister and I asked my grandmother to tell over and over again. My grandmother did not disappoint.
Murder at an Irish Christmas
The O'Sullivan clan of County Cork, Ireland, are back to investigate another case of murder--this time at Christmas! Garda Siobhán O'Sullivan's holiday plans hit a sour note when murder rearranges the Yuletide carols into unexpected eulogies...
Murder in an Irish Cottage
Review by Jill N, Reviewer Last updated on 04 Mar 2020 My Recommendation Garda Siobhan O’Sullivan has big news to share with her family, but before she can figure out how to break the news of her engagement, she gets a call from Macdara Flannery, also a Garda officer. His cousin Jane Delaney had called him very upset, and he asked Siobhan to join him on a trip to the tiny village of Ballysiogdun to collect Jane and find out what happened.
Christmas Cocoa Murder
Review by Kristina A, Reviewer Last updated on 21 Nov 2019 My Recommendation Christmas Cocoa Murder by Carlene O'Connor, Maddie Day, and Alex Erickson contains three cozy novellas that are a part of the following series: An Irish Village Mystery series, A Country Store Mystery series and A Bookstore Café Mystery series. I thought they were three entertaining Christmas cozies. They are all well-written and full of Christmas spirit.
There’s No Wrong Way to Set a Mystery Novel In Ireland
Writers who set murder mysteries in Ireland have a stark challenge to confront: There aren’t many murders in Ireland. Great news for the people, a challenge to writers. When I was researching my first Irish Village Mystery, Murder in an Irish Village, I asked members of a small town in County Limerick if they remembered any murders taking place in the town in their lifetimes. There was just one. A man killed his wife in the bathroom of the local pub.
MURDER IN AN IRISH PUB
A clever Irish lass is not afraid to voice her opinion. Siobhán O’Sullivan may be still fairly new to the Garda, but she seems to have a real aptitude for crime solving (Murder in an Irish Churchyard, 2018, etc.).
Murder in an Irish Pub
Review by Jill N, Reviewer Last updated on 18 Mar 2019 I Recommend This Book Strongly Siobhan O’Sullivan is a relatively new garda, a police officer on the force in her small village of Kilbane in County Cork, Ireland. She is excited to work the upcoming festival and the major poker tournament that has brought so many tourists and guests to the village.
MURDER IN AN IRISH CHURCHYARD
A newly minted member of the Garda finds her first case is murder in more ways than one. Siobhán O’Sullivan’s decision to become a police officer may have cost her a special relationship with Macdara Flannery, a garda who seemed upset by her decision to join without consulting him. Even before her first day on the job, she receives a call from the Kilbane parish priest, who heard a shot and discovered a dead man aboveground in the church graveyard.
