Tis the season to self-gift! Our stylish wishlist for Santa
Tis the season to self-gift! Our stylish wishlist for Santa It’s the most wonderful time of the year … to make endless lists of what to buy our loved ones for Christmas. And the problem with adulting is that we no longer send letters to Santa with our own requests for something stylish and special (although we may make less-than-subtle hints to what we want to find under tree on December 25).
And breathe! Fashion North throws its first ever Rest-ival for students
It’s been a challenging few months for the Fashion North team. The University of Sunderland fashion journalism students who bring you the latest style and beauty news from the North East faced endless lockdowns and Covid restrictions, then were confronted with a university-wide cyber attack which fried all our online work.
Dear fashion fresher me … a letter to our 2019 selves
Here at Fashion North, all our content is produced by fashion journalism students at the University of Sunderland who dream of becoming editors of glossy magazines, fashion stylists or social media managers. Our class of 2022 started their journey back in September 2019 as wide-eyed freshers. Along the way, they have made lookbooks and moodboards, created TikTok videos, recorded podcasts, and written thousands of words about fashion and beauty.
And just like that, a 12-year-old style icon is born
Move over, Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw with your Manolo heels and Fendi baguette bags. A new star is born in the SATC reboot, And Just Like That, and she definitely knows her own style. The new 10-episode series featuring Manhattan icons Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda in middle age is now showing on Sky Comedy.

The weirdest Black Friday ever in the North East
Just a day after the North East learned we were going into the strictest Tier 3 restrictions came what is usually the busiest shopping day of the year. Still in lockdown 2.0 for Black Friday, Fashion North’s Shaun Darley hit Sunderland city centre to show deserted streets and shuttered shops in The Bridges instead of the usual crowds browsing for bargains. All shops will reopen on December 3, but coffee shops, bars and restaurants remain closed.
BREAKING: Thousand of jobs at risk at TopShop, Miss Selfridge and Dorothy Perkins
The Arcadia Group empire which owns high street labels such as Topshop, Burton and Dorothy Perkins could face collapse within days, putting 15,000 jobs at risk, it has been reported today. It is another blow to the fashion retail industry hit so badly by online shopping and the coronavirus. TopShop has branches in Eldon Square, Newcastle, Sunderland, North Shields, Washington and the MetroCentre.
How to look as amazing as Jennifer Aniston at 51: tips from the women in our lives
Imagine looking this good at 51! Friends actress Jennifer Aniston has been pictured looking healthy and glowing in a crop top and leggings for a new ad campaign for Vital Proteins. Jen to hydrating with LOTS of water, getting lots of sleep and at-home skincare regimes. We’ve always been in envy since the days of The Rachel haircut but how does she do it?
Dear fresher me: our letters to our 2018 selves
Here at Fashion North, all our content is produced by fashion journalism students at the University of Sunderland who dream of becoming editors of glossy magazines or fashion stylists or social media managers. Our class of 2021 started their journey back in September 2018 with a trip to Newcastle’s Eldon Square (those were the days!) to curate their best fashion and beauty finds for Fashion North.
Thanks, Fashion North! Our 7th birthday messages
Way back in October 2013, the fashion journalism students at the University of Sunderland launched their very own website, Fashion North, to hone their writing and multimedia skills and to showcase their work in the real world. It all started with a glamorous launch party, with a catwalk show, live music and, of course, a few glasses of bubbles.
Face mask fashion: Nicola Sturgeon is stepping up the game
Alongside all the worrying news about the Covid-19 pandemic and rise in infections, there is one minor extra first world problem for fashionistas…matching your face mask to your outfit. If we’re going to have to cover half our faces for the foreseeable future, we might as well make a style statement.
The Class of 2023! Meet Fashion North’s freshers
It’s a new academic year here at Fashion North and we are welcoming a new cohort of students starting their BA (Hons) Fashion journalism degree next week. Over the next three years, they’ll be learning catwalk reporting, trend forecasting, street style photography, how to style editorial shoots, podcasting, video journalism and much more. And they will be creating their very own fashion magazines and websites using all the skills they’re taught.
20 ways to spoil yourself in self-isolation
You’d think it was the ideal time to slum around in your cosiest pyjamas, make-up free, bedhead hair, and with no one to judge you. Our students are all still working hard from home on their fashion journalism coursework as well as Fashion North articles for you to enjoy during the coronavirus epidemic (waist-up dressing while #wfh, of course). And our fashionistas are making themselves feel better in self-isolation with these indoor treats and indulgences.
Our New Decade Style Resolutions
Eat more healthily, buy more sustainably, follow your dreams to study fashion journalism. The new year is always a great time to make your resolutions. With 2020 comes a brand new decade, so Fashion North asked these budding fashionistas, at Fashion North HQ to learn about our fashion journalism course, for their style resolutions for the 12 months ahead. Holly Anderson 2020 will hopefully be the year celebrating a greener way of living for the majority of us.
Dear fresher me: our fashion journalism students’ emotional notes to self
Back in September 2017, a group of fresh-faced fashion journalism students joined Fashion North and started their three-year journey learning about catwalk reporting, trend forecasting, street style photography, social media and much, much more.
Commuter chic: the Tube map power suit
The Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown just wore a suit that looks like a map of the Tube, and it’s giving us mixed emotions. Candice Brown, who won in 2016, posed outside 10 Downing Street wearing a geometric trouser suit which reminds us of the confusing London Underground map.
Sarah’s red hot on the red carpet
American Horror Story and Birdbox actress Sarah Paulson set the red carpet on fire with this one-off Prada creation. Sarah, 44, wore the Italian pink gown with signature turquoise and yellow flames licking up the hem for the premiere of the movie Glass in London on Wednesday night. Sarah accessorised the dress with Irene Neuwirth emerald and diamond earrings.
Our tiniest and cutest story ever: meet the Fashion North babies
As Fashion North celebrates its fifth birthday, we thought you’d like to see what some of our fashion journalism graduates have been up to! As well as moving on to dream jobs on glossy magazines, online and in public relations, a handful have become mums too. Meet the Fashion North babies… Here’s Sian Whitehead’s cute little boy Archie, aged 20 months. After graduating, Sian went on to work on Sew magazine and has now launched her own personalised childrenswear and gift company SewSian.
Happy birthday to us! Five years of Fashion North fabulousness
Fashion North is celebrating its fifth anniversary! This fashion and beauty website, created and run by students studying fashion journalism at the University of Sunderland, launched with a glittering party back in December 2013, (see the invite below) with the full online launch in January 2014.
12 days of Christmas: eleven pipers piping - Piped trousers
The athleisure trend isn’t going away anytime soon – and once you’ve had your share of mince pies and festive chocolate, it might be time to invest in some elasticated waist joggers. And in tune with our piping theme, here’s some favourites with piping down the leg for that slimming effect. Pass around the Quality Street. We love these Pippa loungewear joggers from Boden, and they’re down from £55 to £33. How about something with a pattern?
Dear fresher me…a fashion journalism letter to myself
Way back in September 2016, a new group of fresh-faced fashion journalism students started out with Fashion North and their three-year journey learning about trend forecasting, street style photography, social media and much, much more.
Life in the fashion cupboard: My placement taught me I’ve chosen the right career path
As part of your third year as a fashion journalism student at the University of Sunderland, you’ll complete a compulsory 10-day work placement. Students have previously carried out their work experience at the likes of Elle, Grazia, Glamour, Drapers and In Style. Here, Candice Farrow shares her advice after two weeks at the Sun newspaper in London in the autumn of 2018, working on their Fabulous fashion pages.
Supermarket style sweep
You don’t think of adding the best fashion finds to your weekly grocery shop. But, as fashion retail website Drapers reveals that high street fashion chain Oasis are to launch concessions in Sainsbury’s, we hit the big four supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrison to check out our favourite till-to-wardrobe buys. Updating your wardrobe can be an expensive activity, but it doesn’t have to be. We had a mooch around the local Sainsbury’s to see what they had in store.
Kate’s got her groove back
She’s well known for recycling her outfits and her conservative wardrobe (at least compared to sister-in-law Meghan). But the Duchess of Cambridge seemed to have her style groove back in an off-the-shoulder Erdem number while visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on Wednesday.
That Harrods shopaholic: how to spend £16, not £16 MILLION!
Here at Fashion North, we love fashion as much as the next girl. Or so we thought … until we read about the wife of a jailed Azerbaijani banker who managed to blow £16 million at top London department store Harrods over the last 10 years. That’s the same as £4,000 a day! Zamira Hajiyeva, 55, is now at the centre of an investigation over whether she used stolen cash to fund her 10-year spree on jewellery, watches, perfume and other luxury goods.

Style & beauty inspo from fashion journalism students at the University of Sunderland
Our freshers’ fab fashion finds
Here at Fashion North, we’re welcoming a new cohort of BA (Hons) fashion journalism students to the University of Sunderland. And what better way to celebrate their arrival than with a shopping trip! Our fabulous freshers spent the day at Newcastle’s Eldon Square scouring the stores and ransacking the rails to reveal their favourite fashion and beauty must-haves for their new life on campus. Sophie Henderson recommends a high fashion, Clueless-style tartan skirt at only £17.99 from New look.
