Reflections of a Caregiver
Last December, I became a recipient of caregiving. I am not unique. Receiving care is something that can potentially happen to anyone at any point in our lives. Suddenly, being on the inside looking out, as someone who was receiving rather than providing care was different. My own first call for care for a family member, was unexpected and made a difference in my life. In 1999, I received my first call to care for a family member.
Health, Hope and Hospice
“The word "hospice" comes from the Latin "hospitium" meaning guesthouse. It was originally described a place of shelter for weary and sick travelers returning from religious pilgrimages. During the 1960's, Dr. Cicely Saunders began the modern hospice movement by establishing St. Christopher's Hospice near London. St. Christopher's organized a team approach to professional caregiving, and was the first program to use modern pain management techniques to compassionately care for the dying.

This was my fifth family member, whose health crisis catapulted me into being a caregiver. I had learned a lot from caring for my father, mother, aunt and uncle, but my experience with my brother was very different; not in every way, but in ways that I thought may be helpful to share with other caregivers.

Solving the Driving Dilemma
Long Distance Caregiving can be challenging—and one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Caroline H. Sheppard shares her story of how she was called to oversee the care of five different family members over a fifteen year period from afar. There are many “how to” books on caregiving, but few share their story-the raw emotions, the exhaustion and that show how, in the end the caregiver gains wonderful gifts, lessons and a deepened love and understanding for those they help.
