When an AI agent causes the breach, POPIA still holds you accountable
South Africa’s Information Regulator received more than 1 220 security compromise notifications between 1 April and the end of August this year, and expects the total to pass 3 000 by the end of the financial year. Its assessments keep pointing to inadequate controls, weak passwords, phishing and human error. Every one of those causes assumes a person somewhere in the chain.

AI agents are challenging enterprises' security assumptions
Since AI agents can act across systems at machine speed, they require companies to rethink security controls built around human behaviour. Cybersecurity conversations around AI often centre on familiar risks such as data leakage, model vulnerabilities, and overly broad access permissions. While important, these risks obscure a larger reality: most enterprise security controls were designed around human behavior, whereas AI agents operate fundamentally differently.
AI Is Breaking the Boundaries of Zero Trust
Governance also applies to how AI agents interact with enterprise data. Unlike traditional AI assistants, these systems retrieve information, interact with business applications, and complete tasks for users. They require the same access controls, monitoring, and audit capabilities as human users. Zero trust must apply throughout the AI lifecycle, especially during inference, when models access enterprise data and generate critical outputs.
Autonomous agents are a new class of security principal
- Advertisement - Every major technology shift forces enterprises to revisit long-standing assumptions about governance. Cloud computing changed where applications run; mobile changed where work happens; today, AI is changing how decisions are made and executed inside core enterprise networks. The recent cybersecurity incident involving OpenAI and Hugging Face illustrates this paradigm shift.

Backup and security are a matter of AI economics
IDC’s estimates that global data volume will surge to 393.9 zettabytes by 2028. This growth puts business continuity, data protection, governance, and the cost of sustaining them under greater pressure. In Asia-Pacific, where rapid digitalisation, expanding cloud adoption, and data localisation requirements are accelerating data creation, organisations face an even steeper challenge in managing scale and complexity.
Every retail company needs to be a technology company Original
Retailers across Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) are entering the busiest retail period of the year with renewed optimism. Consumer sentiment is improving after a period of uncertainty driven by inflation pressure and shifting household budgets. Optimism alone, however, is not enough. In today's data-driven economy, the retail companies that succeed are those that think and act like technology companies.
The first step to data protection is visibility and control
Cyberattacks are growing more sophisticated as AI increases data volume. Organizations face challenges with scattered data environments and inconsistent security. This lack of visibility creates risks and liabilities. Strong data governance offers a solution. Unified visibility and embedded governance are crucial for detecting threats and preventing breaches. This approach builds resilience and fosters innovation.
The first step to data protection is visibility and control
6 hours ago iOS 26 is a huge update for iPhone, with a Liquid Glass design and lots of new features for built-in apps like Wallet, Messages, and Music. One popular app—Apple Calendar—mostly got overlooked this year, but it did gain one key new advantage: event creation via screenshots. Adding Calendar events is …
Every Retail Company needs to be a Technology Company
GUEST OPINION: Retailers across Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) are entering the busiest retail period of the year with renewed optimism. Consumer sentiment is improving after a period of uncertainty driven by inflation pressure and shifting household budgets. Optimism alone, however, is not enough. In today's data-driven economy, the retail companies that succeed are those that think and act like technology companies.
Data protection starts with visibility and control
Organizations need to reassess whether visibility and governance are used as their foundation for resilience. As AI drives up both the volume and value of enterprise data, cybercriminals are matching pace with increasingly sophisticated attacks. At the same time, organizations operate across sprawling data environments, where each platform enforces its own security and governance models.
Data Protection Begins with Visibility and Control
GUEST OPINION: As AI drives up both the volume and value of enterprise data, cybercriminals are matching pace with increasingly sophisticated attacks. This is evident in Australia, where investments in AI, cybersecurity, and cloud are expected to drive IT spending to $172 billion by 2026. Australian organisations are not only prioritising innovation but also recognising the urgent need to secure and govern their data environments - particularly amid amendments to Australia's Privacy Act.

Celebrating Data Privacy Day: Ensuring ethical agentic AI in our daily interactions
Both AI agents and agentic AI are becoming increasingly powerful and prevalent. With AI agents, we can automate simple tasks and save time in our everyday lives. With agentic AI, businesses can automate complex enterprise processes. Widespread AI use is an inevitability, and the question going forward is not if we’ll use the technology but how well. In a world where AI takes on more responsibility, we need to know how to measure its effectiveness.
AI security is a data management problem
Over the last few years, the volume and variety of data that organizations have access to has exploded, with 64% of organizations managing at least one petabyte (which is 1 million gigabytes, or 1,000 terabytes) of data and 41% working at least 500 quadrillion bytes of data. This data is essential for decision-making; it offers critical insights made available with enterprise AI's power.
AI-Driven SOC Transformation with Cloudera: Enhancing Security Operations with Agentic AI
Security Operations Centers (SOCs) are the backbone of organizational cybersecurity, responsible for detecting, investigating, and responding to threats in real-time. Yet, the increasing complexity and volume of cyber threats present significant challenges. SOC teams often grapple with alert fatigue, skill shortages, and time-consuming processes. Generative AI (GenAI), coupled with Agentic AI, offers a revolutionary approach to addressing these pain points.
Empower Your Cyber Defenders with Real-Time Analytics Author: Carolyn Duby, Field CTO
Today, cyber defenders face an unprecedented set of challenges as they work to secure and protect their organizations. In fact, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) Annual Data Breach Report, there were 2,365 cyber attacks in 2023 with more than 300 million victims, and a 72% increase in data breaches since 2021. The constant barrage of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks has left many professionals feeling overwhelmed and burned out.
Achieving Optimal Zero Trust Maturity: The Role of Data and Governance
By Carolyn Duby, Chief Technology Officer, Cloudera Government Solutions The federal government has placed a stronger emphasis on zero trust since OMB’s federal zero trust strategy memo from the beginning of 2022, requiring agencies to have a security model in place that assumes every device, application, or user attempting to access a network cannot be trusted.
How Cloudera Supports Zero Trust for Data
By now, almost everyone across the tech landscape has heard of the Zero Trust (ZT) security model, which assumes that every device, application, or user attempting to access a network is not to be trusted (see NIST definitions below). But as models go, the idea is easier than the execution.
In Government, Secure Data Drives the Greater Good
By Carolyn Duby, Field CTO and Cybersecurity Lead, Cloudera Government Solutions As a key component of President Biden’s December 2021 Executive Order on citizen experience, government agencies must be committed to ensuring an effective, equitable and accountable team that meets the needs of the people. By taking full advantage of the power of data, they can target specific goals to achieve this mission.

Making the World a Better Place with Data
Much of the hype around big data and analytics focuses on business value and bottom-line impacts. Those are enormously important in the private and public sectors alike. But for government agencies, there is a greater mission: improving people’s lives. Data makes the most ambitious and even idealistic goals—like making the world a better place—possible.

Protect the Business from Edge to AI with Cloudera Cybersecurity
Gartner estimates 30x connected device growth by 2020. Faster 5G networks bringing an explosion of inexpensive, connected devices. This enables new and more innovative applications and capabilities to improve customer experience. However, all these new applications and connections also broaden the network attack surface. This increases the risk of data breaches and cyber-attacks. Security operations are already short staffed and struggling with alert fatigue.
