What Does It Take to Be a Black Romantic? How I Learned to Both Fantasize and Remember
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to romance. The interest could’ve come from the story of my parents meeting at 15, then surviving the long-distance split of college and the military. Or it could’ve come from my upbringing in the Baptist church, all those couples dressing up every Sunday in their wide-brimmed hats and starched suits. Even before I was old enough to see the world clearly, I sought out films with hazy filters and spinning camera shots.

Gather Here Again
Her grandbabies should be asleep, yet here they are, restless as everyone else tonight. By the time they tiptoe down the central stairs, the creaking giving them away, she’s long lost the sun. The sky is a sweep of black. Only the backyard porch lights keep her eyes from working too hard as she kneels into the garden. Clusters of chickweeds, their white tufts masquerading as flowers, have sprung up between the chrysanthemums and squash, whose vines circle each other loop after loop.
