How Jeremy Lin’s career mirrors the current Asian American movement
I interviewed Jeremy Lin for the first time in 2013. It was the All-Star break in Houston, almost exactly one year after Linsanity. After we wrapped the interview, I mumbled something to him about loving everything he was doing for Asian culture. I couldn’t contain myself. I was 32 then, and still evolving in my own journey of self-discovery. It wasn’t the best example of professionalism, but Lin was my Jackie Robinson.
Two weeks after the Atlanta spa shootings, there’s still a lot to talk about
It’s been two weeks since the Atlanta spa shootings. Are you still outraged? Or are you tired and need a break? If you’re tired, that’s normal, and you’re not a bad person, but recognize that’s privilege at work. Some of us can retreat to the comfort and distraction of our homes. Others can be asleep at home in the middle of the night and systemic racism will still find them like it did Breonna Taylor. Racial trauma is inescapable.
I can’t sleep.
I can’t sleep. Normally my boring family life had me in bed over an hour ago. But ol’ racism is keeping me up again. This isn’t going to be poetic or even coherent, might have a bunch of typos, but whatever, I got to vent. Because as any person of color, especially Black, could already tell you, we have other normal life stress we have to deal with on top of this bullshit. First, I’m hoping the media’s trendy new coverage and focus on AAPI hate doesn’t detract from BLM and other racial injustices.
I had a million reasons to love Bruce Lee, but I hated him
“Those who are unaware they are walking in darkness will never see the light” — Bruce Lee I’m supposed to write about Bruce Lee right now, but it’s hard to concentrate. I’m thinking about what’s happening to black and African Americans in this country. Talking about Asian identity issues feels like an utter lack of perspective, but as my colleague Marc Spears tweeted: “This Bruce Lee documentary is coming at a excellent time in the midst of today’s world.” So, here goes.
Why it is NOT the ‘Chinese virus’
Have you ever walked into a crowded movie theater late? The lights are dim and you need to find a seat. You wait until there’s a bright scene, then sheepishly tiptoe down the aisle, blocking the view of moviegoers behind you. It feels like everyone’s watching you. Or maybe they’re not and it’s all in your head. Then again, maybe it isn’t. That’s being Asian American during the coronavirus pandemic, when racism toward Asians and Asian Americans is growing so quickly the FBI issued a warning.

Wataru Misaka broke pro basketball’s color barrier; you should know his name
“Alexa, who is the first player the New York Knicks ever drafted?” “Sorry, I don’t know that one.” Few do, Alexa. Fewer realize it’s the same answer to a more significant question: Who broke professional basketball’s color barrier? That would be Wataru “Wat” Misaka, a 5-foot-7 Japanese-American who in 1947 became the first non-white player in the NBA (then called the Basketball Association of America). Overly simplified, Misaka is pro basketball’s Jackie Robinson.
Why ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ was a game-changer
Progress can feel both glacially slow and lightning quick at the same time. In 2015, when ABC premiered Fresh Off the Boat, it was the first network show with an Asian American cast since Margaret Cho’s All-American Girl premiered in 1994. Now six seasons later, the longest running sitcom about an Asian American family in television history will come to an end in February after 116 episodes.
Sophia Chang, the Wu-Tang Clan’s ‘muse,’ says the group helped her embrace her race
America, witness the Wu-naissance. In May, Showtime aired Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men, a four-part documentary. Earlier this month, Hulu launched the miniseries Wu-Tang: An American Saga. And on Sept. 26, the woman Method Man once described as Wu-Tang’s “muse,” Sophia Chang, drops her audiobook memoir, The Baddest Bitch in the Room.
Cleveland Browns’ Chris Hubbard hopes to tackle the negative stigma around mental health
Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Chris Hubbard is used to battling opponents on the field, but his biggest fight has come from within. Previously with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 28-year-old, six-year NFL vet has sought help dealing with the pressures of the NFL, the suicide of a friend who was bullied for being gay, and even societal challenges facing black men in America.
From Winter Olympics to summer intern: Mirai Nagasu’s next chapter
Fame came fast for figure skater Mirai Nagasu. At the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang last year, Nagasu made history as the first American woman to land a triple axel in Olympic competition, en route to winning a bronze medal. But after a skating career that includes multiple Olympics and a U.S. title, Nagasu has stepped away from competitive figure skating. In search of what’s next, she ended up in a place someone of her stature rarely does: at a local TV internship.
Randall Park on Asian Americans in hip-hop - and punching Keanu Reeves
You might recognize Randall Park’s face trending on your Netflix homepage. Alongside comedian Ali Wong, Park is the star, co-writer and co-producer of the new rom-com Always Be My Maybe. Best known from ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat, Park plays a wannabe rapper, a natural fit since that was him in college. Park spoke with The Undefeated about Asians in hip-hop, rapping about punching Keanu Reeves, and his top five MCs of all time. The interview has been edited and condensed for length and clarity.
Reaching New Heights on the Fortune 500 List

Jeremy Lin: ‘There’s definitely some bittersweetness to my career’
Linsanity now resides in the original land of Vinsanity. After buying out his contract with the Atlanta Hawks, Jeremy Lin has joined the Toronto Raptors for the playoff stretch. Despite playing for his eighth team in nine seasons, the 30-year-old guard remains one of the most popular players in the NBA.

Jared Jeffries was a rising NBA executive, then he decided to embrace esports
Former NBA player Jared Jeffries, pivoted his career to focus on esports. (Kyle Grillot for The Washington Post) Jared Jeffries wanted no part of Michael Jordan’s poker games in the rear of the Washington Wizards’ team plane in 2002. Jeffries was a rookie fresh out of Indiana. Jordan was his boss, his teammate, the team president, minority owner, and to many the greatest basketball player of all time.
Going virile: How ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ redefines Hollywood’s Asian man
There’s a scene in the new movie Crazy Rich Asians when Singaporean actor Pierre Png walks out of the shower toward his gorgeous wife, played by British model Gemma Chan. The camera lingers on him and his fitness-app abs for a few seconds longer than normal, his shirtless body objectified just as thoroughly as actresses have been for decades. Think Halle Berry in Swordfish.
Is ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ the Asian ‘Black Panther‘?
1993. The year Jurassic Park, the first film in the original trilogy, came out. That’s the last time a major Hollywood studio released a movie with an all Asian-American cast. There hasn’t been a big-budget movie starring Asian-Americans, based in contemporary times, doing non-martial arts things since The Joy Luck Club 25 years ago. Think about that. No Asian Get Out. No Girls Trip.
Just stop with the slanted-eye racist gestures
Remember Chris Rock’s bit in Never Scared when he couldn’t believe the mounting allegations facing Michael Jackson? “Another kid?! Another kid?! I thought it was Groundhog Day when I heard that s—.” That’s how I feel about the recurring emergence of a racist, stereotypical action at the World Cup that every Asian-American is all-too familiar with: the slanted-eye gesture. Another gesture?
