Solar Index -14% Through June: California Decline Offset by Solar Growth Markets
OhmHome’s analysis of the market performance through June indicates that 2017 may end up lower than industry analysts forecasts of -2.4%. Although the market is expected to decline in 2017, analysts predict a rebound in 2018 by 20% as mature markets “re-tool” and growth states attract early adopters. The decline in select mature markets is likely due to the exhaustion of rebates in certain states as well a pull-back in acquisition spend by national installers.
Residential Solar Market Turmoil Intensifies As California Declines 41% in First Quarter
OhmHome's California Solar Index, which tracks new solar permits in major markets, declined 41% in the first quarter of 2017 from the same period in 2016. The decline is partially due to the record rain in California in January and February, but March activity was also down 41% from the prior year. The downturn in California, the largest solar market by a wide margin in the U.S., has likely contributed to the recent turmoil for the larger residential solar installers.
Bill Gates: An Energy Miracle
Last week, Bill Gates published a blog post on his visit to Caltech Professor Nate Lewis's research laboratory on solar fuels. Solar fuels leverage similar natural processes such as photosynthesis in plants to convert sunlight into liquid fuel. Solar fuels have the opportunity to solve several of the shortfalls of renewable technologies: solar panels only generate power when the sun shines and transportation infrastructure energy applications require very high energy densities.
Residential Solar: A Buyer's Market
This week, residential solar platform Sungevity filed for bankruptcy, adding to the list of troubled companies in the solar industry. The company was touted as having an asset-light model relative to competitors, but never gained significant market share. Last year, the company planned to go public through a special-purpose acquisition vehicle (SPAC or blank check company), but the transaction was cancelled.
Solar Industry Takes Steps to Protect Consumers
Barry Cinnamon of Cinnamon Solar did a helpful podcast with Tom Kimbis, the Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), on self regulation in the solar industry. In the podcast, Mr. Kimbis discusses common consumer issues within solar and steps SEIA has taken to improve consumer protection, including a new suite of products. SEIA processes solar consumer complaints directly and from a variety of other sources.
How New York City Can Reach Its Energy Storage Targets
Sustainable CUNY released a Resilient Solar Roadmap for NYC through its NYSolar Smart DG Hub in an effort to increase the deployment of resilient solar installations and achieve energy storage targets. The DG Hub assisted in developing NYC's and the first municipal energy storage target of 100 MWh by 2020 in September of 2016. The roadmap is designed for NYC, but can be applied to the rest the market for solar in New York.
Research Shows Solar + Storage Has the Highest Benefit of Offsetting Utility Infrastructure Requirements
Rooftop solar company Sunrun presented a case for solar + storage having the highest benefit of offsetting utility infrastructure requirements, citing research from a Crossborder Energy. The research used data from APS in Arizona, where a settlement was reached on March 1st regarding rate designs for solar customers. Sunrun also cited recent research by Berkeley that calls into question arguments made by solar critics that rooftop solar increases retail rates.
New York Expands Programs for Public School District Solar Installations
The New York Power Authority announced yesterday that they will be expanding the K-Solar Initiative, which assists New York school districts in installing solar systems. The program will add two new solar developers and already has 25 districts with signed PPAs and 380 districts interested in participating. The increased support from NYPA highlights the opportunity and growth for solar within the education sector, as seen in other large solar markets.
Start-Up Takes on Tesla With Aesthetic Solar Installations
According to MIT News, Sistine Solar is one of the latest companies to offer a more aesthetic solar panel alternative to traditional panels. Some consumers are hesitant to add solar to their rooftops due to the "eyesore", so their is a growing market for more aesthetic options, including Tesla's solar roof. Tesla announced the solar roof product in late 2016 in response to this market demand and in mid-2017 will offer four roof tile styles that are "invisible from the street".
NY-Sun Initiative Generated Nearly 800% Growth in Solar in New York Since 2011
Governor Cuomo announced that state-supported solar increased nearly 800% from December 2011 to December 2016, which is an important milestone to the state's goal of reaching 50% renewable energy generation by 2030. Nearly 65,000 projects have been installed through the end of 2016, compared with approximately 9,000 projects prior to the end of 2011. The 65,000 projects accounted for nearly 744 megawatts of solar capacity or enough to meet the needs of more than 121,000 homes.
Solar Leasing Continues to Lose Share to Loans
Recently released data from NYSERDA demonstrates the increasing trend of consumers electing to purchase solar vs. lease (lease or power purchase agreement). In January in New York, the percentage of residential solar systems purchased was 46%, validating the shift that began in mid-2016 to purchases vs. leases. The same trend was seen in California, which experienced an increase in purchased systems from 42% in the beginning of 2015 to 53% in Q3-16.
New York Green Bank Q4 Report Highlights Commitment to Solar in New York
On February 15th, the New York Green Bank (NYGB) released its Q4-2016 report, which highlights the state's commitment to expanding solar in New York. NYGB's mission is to accelerate clean energy deployment in New York state by working in collaboration with the private sector to transform financing markets. Since inception, the NYGB has received $1.8 billion in investment proposals and maintains an active pipeline of projects proceed to close of approximately $600 million as of December 2016.
Legislation Proposed in New Mexico to Increase Solar Disclosures
Lawmakers in New Mexico have proposed legislation that would increase the transparency requirements of solar companies during the solar sales process. Industry groups are split on the issue with established solar companies supporting the changes noting that it is in the best interest of consumers while environmental groups believe it would unnecessarily prohibit solar adoption. Solar penetration in New Mexico has trailed that of other similarly sunny U.S. states. Rep.
San Diego Solar Home Valuation Check
There have been a number of studies recently to help consumers understand whether solar panels increase home values with the conclusion that solar homes carry a premium to non-solar homes and the premium is approximately equal to the net cost (after incentives) of the system. The most recent study, Selling into the Sun conducted by the Berkeley Lab evaluated a data set of 3,951 homes spanning 12 years and 8 states.
New York City Illumuninated By Solar Energy
In late 2016, Mayor de Blasio announced that solar power in New York City has nearly quadrupled since he took office increasing from 25 MW to 96 MW with cumulative solar installations reaching 8,000. New York City has increased the targets to 1,000 MW by 2030.
CfA Asks Florida AG to Investigate Residential Solar Industry
The Campaign for Accountability (CfA) asked Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to open up an investigation into companies that offer residential solar panels in Florida. The group claims that some solar companies are using misleading sales practices and targeting elderly consumers, who are particularly susceptible to these tactics. The claims are based on a review of complaints filed with the Florida AG since 2011.
