A blog about post-parental confidence
In April this year, nine months after returning to work after having a baby, I finally felt that my confidence had returned. And yet, 4 months later, I’m off again with my second baby arriving tomorrow. I didn’t plan it this way, and indeed didn’t think it was even possible, and it took me a while to get my head round it, and excited about it. A lot of that was about the fear of another dip in confidence.
Design for planet and purse: Cat Drew on reaching web zero equitably
In response to the prime minister’s U-turn on web zero targets, Design Council chief design officer Cat Drew discusses how design may help us transfer quicker moderately than slower. Prime minister Rishi Sunak’s bulletins on the comfort of web zero targets and laws are actual trigger for concern.
Reimagining the economy with Sisterhood principles
This is the third of three blogs that Abby and I have written to record the collective thoughts of The Point People about a new type of economy we see emerging, which we’re calling sisterhood economics, inspired by Jennifer Armbrust’s The Sisterhood. In the first blog, Abby talks about why we think this is important. In the second, we share the examples of what we think these businesses look like.

The Double Diamond, 15 years on…
Any service designer will have heard of the ‘Double Diamond’. And probably many other designers will have too. It was created by a group of people at Design Council in the early noughties (led by Richard Eisermann, including Clive Grinyer, Jennie Winhall, Gill Wildman, Anna White, Chris Vanstone, Jonathan Ball, Andrea Siodmok and others!) as they were trying to understand how the design process works. Then, as now, many people think ‘design’ refers to objects, chairs, clothes.
Design for data ethics: using service design approaches to operationalize ethical principles on four projects
AbstractEthical frameworks provide helpful guidance about what you should—and should not—do in relation to data projects. But they do not provide definitive yes/no answers about what an ethical data project is or is not.
Data science ethics in government
AbstractData science can offer huge opportunities for government. With the ability to process larger and more complex datasets than ever before, it can provide better insights for policymakers and make services more tailored and efficient. As with all new technologies, there is a risk that we do not take up its opportunities and miss out on its enormous potential. We want people to feel confident to innovate with data.
Bringing big data and design to policymaking
Bringing big data and design to policymaking Cat Drew explores how the UK’s Policy Lab and GDS data teams are bringing an approach to policymaking that combines data, digital, and design.
