Ask the author: Catherine Hanley on Joanna Plantagenet
Skip to main content By Catherine Hanley I’ve known about Joanna’s existence seemingly forever, but she only ever appears in the background of works about the more famous members of her family: as Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine’s daughter, or as Richard the Lionheart’s sister. She’s just another name on the family tree – and, even then, only where the family tree bothers to include the daughters at all. Many books have been published about Joanna’s male relatives and about her mother.

‘Poet, Mystic, Widow, Wife’ and ‘God’s Own Gentlewoman’ review
Fed up with reading misogynistic texts about the nature of women, written by men, Christine de Pizan decided she could do better. The Book of the City of Ladies, completed around 1405, was the result, becoming her most famous work. The widowed Christine went on to make a living from her writing, supporting her family as the first professional female author in Europe.
1217 and the ideals of chivalry
In 1217 a man known as ‘the greatest knight’ broke a treaty to, as he saw it, save England from French rule. Catherine Hanley asks: did he go against the ideals of chivalry? “What, then, is chivalry?” This question is posed in the History of William Marshal, a 13th-century biography of a man who is often called ‘the greatest knight’ in history and held up as a paragon of chivalry.

MATILDA by Catherine Hanley Read by Jennifer M Dixon
Jennifer Dixon narrates this audiobook on the life of twelfth-century Empress Matilda in an expressive and engaged tone that transport listeners to an earlier time. As the only legitimate daughter of Henry I, ruler of England and Normandy, and the widow of Henry V, ruler of the Romans, Empress Matilda played an important role in political affairs--both in her own right, and through her husband and son.
Peter Marshall - Too Female to Rule?
The life story of Matilda (1102–67), empress of Germany and almost-but-not-quite queen of England, contains more dramatic plot twists than a season or three of Game of Thrones. In 1110, her father, King Henry I, last of the sons of William the Conqueror, dispatched her to Liège to become the bride (on reaching twelve) of Emperor Henry V. The marriage ended childlessly with Henry’s death in 1125, but not before Matilda had been politically tutored to serve as her husband’s regent in Italy.
Two Houses, Two Kingdoms
Description Praise The twelfth and thirteenth centuries were a time of personal monarchy, when the close friendship or petty feuding between kings and queens could determine the course of history. The Capetians of France and the Angevins of England waged war, made peace, and intermarried. The lands under the control of the English king once reached to within a few miles of Paris, and those ruled by the French house, at their apogee, crossed the Channel and encompassed London itself.
