Bouře ve sklenici - Catherine Mann
O knize Bouře ve sklenici Po smrti milované tety chce Bailey Rae odejít. V Bent Oaku v Jižní Karolíně už ji nic nedrží a s tetinou inspirativní kuchařkou i plánem na nový život chce začít znovu.

Levelling Up: What's Gone Wrong and How Should it Change?
The UK is home to many world-leading innovators and businesses, but economic growth and underlying higher productivity has been disproportionately concentrated in London and the South East of England. This concentration creates stark geographic inequalities, adversely affecting opportunities and quality of life across the country in significant ways. A striking example of this inequality is the 15-year difference in life expectancy between the best and worst-performing local authorities.
How are the UK’s Devolved Nations Faring Ahead of the General Election?
The UK is approaching a general election – due at the latest in January 2025 but expected in the second half of this year. Many of the big policy issues will be of broad concern across the country, but some will be of particular importance for the UK’s devolved nations.
Productivity, Living Standards and Wellbeing: Comparing the UK and Australia
Why is it useful to compare the UK to Australia? World Bank data show that real GDP per capita, adjusted for purchase power parity (PPP), for the UK and Australia, follows very similar patterns. In fact, from at least 1990 up until 2008, they differed by less than £700, the UK GDP being the highest. The Great Financial Crisis (GFC) affected the UK more severely, causing its GDP to drop about £2,100 below that of Australia.
UK Business Investment: Economists, Managers, Financiers
This review assesses research using a framework that integrates three perspectives: that of the economist, the business manager, and the financial investor. Each perspective has a voluminous research output, but an integrated view might offer new insights and direction for future research that are particularly relevant for the UK.
Improving UK Living Standards
Why is the recovery of living standards so slow? There are two reasons. First, the bottom 50 per cent of the income distribution suffered a disproportionately large hit to their living standards. Since 2019-20, their disposable income has contracted by between seven and 20 per cent. In concrete terms, this means that the poorest 10 per cent of households have an income shortfall of some £4,600 on average.
Linking Geopolitics to the Macroeconomy
No one would dispute that economic policy matters—be it fiscal, monetary, microeconomic policies, or the latest fashion, industrial strategies. Most would also subscribe to the view that for individual countries, the stability and quality of the legal, political, and economic systems matter for macroeconomic performance, even if the exact link is uncertain.
Productivity - NIESR
Unskilled workers have experienced little wage progression in the UK in recent years. The tax and benefit system has until recent propped up incomes at the bottom of the distribution,... The Covid-19 pandemic struck the world economy in the midst of a decade that witnessed a broad-based decline in productivity growth. Lockdowns closed many businesses, jobs were either permanently or...
Where Are We With Regional Inequalities in the UK?
Where are we with regional inequalities in the UK? The UK remains one of the most spatially unequal and over-centralised countries among the 38 members of the OECD. Some of the stylized facts that underline this chronic condition are, first, the significant extent of inter- and intra-regional disparities of wealth, health and other indicators of prosperity and well-being and, second, the disparities of resources and decision-making powers between different tiers of government.
What's Happening to Levelling Up?
What progress has been achieved to date? The UK has some of the highest regional inequalities among the 38 OECD countries, notably in terms of GDP and productivity.
Climate Policy and Global Challenges: A Monetary Policy Perspective
Abstract The physical and transition risks associated with climate change have important implications for the macroeconomic environment and are therefore relevant for consideration by central banks and monetary policy makers. This paper discusses the challenge of attaining net zero, and highlights that the choice of climate transition policies implemented by home and foreign authorities have consequences for volatility, output and inflation.

Quantitative Tightening: Protecting Monetary Policy from Fiscal Encroachment
28 July, 2021 As we face up to the need to plan an eventual exit from quantitative easing, in this Commentary we consider how to reform both sides of the central bank balance sheet in a manner that will prepare the ground for a contraction in the balance sheet that does not expose the central bank to excessive risk.
Closing the Racial Inequality Gaps
The Economic Cost of Racial Inequality in the U.S. In his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” Today, more than at any time since Dr. King’s assassination, we are bearing witness to the grave injustices affecting our fellow citizens.

Growth and Inequality Effects of Decades of Financial Transformation in OECD Countries
Finance has massively expanded and deeply changed across OECD countries over the past 50 years. Rapid growth of finance has been accompanied by a debt shift away from business towards household credit and, after 2000, a withering of equity capital. Econometric investigations indicate that these changes have contributed to slowing down potential growth.
Zombie companies stop productivity growth
The global economy is picking up steam, but that’s deceptive. The foundations of expansion are soft, marked by weak productivity growth and inequality. The two are related. The productivity problem confronting the world’s advanced economies predates the financial crisis. Advanced economies have become less dynamic and are at risk of becoming sclerotic unless the ambition for reform is revived. It’s essential that we understand three sources of the current productivity slump in particular.

How Zombie Companies Stop Productivity Growth
First, the productivity slowdown masks a widening performance gap between more productive and less productive firms, as the chart below shows (the picture for service sector firms is even worse). This divergence is not just driven by firms at the frontiers of their industry, pushing the technological boundaries, but also by stagnating productivity growth at what can be called laggard companies that have failed to adopt the leaders' best practices.

Designing policies that support growth
