Neural Cell Models of Specific Reading Disabilities: Identification of Cellular and Transcriptome Alterations
1 Introduction Specific reading disabilities (RD, developmental dyslexia) are the most common learning disability, affecting 5%–7% of children in North America [1, 2]. RD is a heritable (~66% heritability) [3-7], specific neurobiological learning disability characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and poor decoding (understanding the relations between verbal and written representations) [8].
MIR1255A regulates pathways critical for brain development, risk genes for depression and neurodevelopmental disorders
Abstract Multiple lines of evidence implicate microRNAs (miRNAs) in major depressive disorder (MDD), including the location of miRNAs genes (MIRs) within genomic regions identified by genome wide association studies (GWAS). To investigate the role of MIRs in the genetic risk for MDD, we identified all associated single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) that were expression quantitative loci (eQTLs) for MIRs in brain tissues.
Avoiding founder’s syndrome through good governance
In a series of interviews with founders and board chairs of Canadian non-profits, one board chair shared the following: “The WE scandal was all over the papers, all over the news.
Overexpression of OTX2 in human neural cells links depression risk genes - Translational Psychiatry
Abstract Genome wide association studies (GWAS) have implicated the OTX2 (Orthodenticle homeobox 2) gene locus in major depressive disorders (MDD) as well as genetically correlated traits. Of the genes identified by MDD GWAS, the gene for the transcription factor OTX2 stands out as it is responsible for both opening and closing of critical and sensitive brain periods.
The non-profit sector’s ongoing data deficit
The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed many truths: Canada relies heavily on fragile global supply chains; social and economic status affects health outcomes; many essential workers are poorly paid; and data matters. Never before has our collective attention been so focused on data. Case counts, hospitalization numbers, test positivity rates, and the predictions of the latest statistical models are part of daily conversation.
