Matt Maher: All the People Said Amen
INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTIST By Hannah Goodwyn CBN.com Senior Producer CBN.com Matt Maher’s been on a musical journey. Back in 2003, he wrote, “Your Grace Is Enough,” a song many Christian music listeners probably know by heart. Now, 10 years later, Maher’s still overwhelmed when he sings about the grace of God. In an interview with CBN.com, the Canadian-born worship leader took a moment to reflect on the past decade. “I feel very humble…humbled by the presence of God,” says Maher.
Let No One Keep You From the Prize
As I press on in my relationship with Christ, I’m learning that obedience is a big thing to God. Very big. Plus, obedience brings incredible rewards (Deuteronomy 11:26-28). I believe being in Christ is the most peaceful, secure and protected place anyone could ever be—a place of complete satisfaction and contentment to the heart. I’m choosing to obey out of my love for God and so that nothing interferes with being in this most awesome, sacred place.
United In Love
Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. (Colossians 3:14 CSB) We find our focus Scripture today in a passage about living the Christian life. Now, I don’t believe the Bible casually throws around words or instructions—so, the fact that Colossians 3:14 says “above all” makes me sit up and pay attention! Above all, we are to put on love.
Growing Through Church Setbacks
As an active churchgoing Christian for four-and-a-half decades, I have attended a few different churches spanning a few different eras. I was raised in the classic worship songs from Integrity’s Hosanna Music, in the period of the ’80s and ’90s, where Don Moen practically wrote the new evangelical hymnal and mega churches became all the rage.
Trusting God for Medical Miracle
“I could listen to the doctors and nurses talking to me, but it kind of sounded like a tunnel sound. My whole world was just turned upside down. I was numb.” There was nothing Beth could do but watch as her husband, David Robles, was rushed into emergency surgery. “I knew that perhaps that was going to be the last time that I saw my husband alive.” Beth had driven the retired marine to Naval Medical center in San Diego.
Fruit of the Spirit - Self-Control
The fruit of the Spirit is recorded by Paul in his letter to the church in Galatia. Galatians 5:22-23 says, “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” (NLT). The fruit of the Spirit is demonstrated in the life of those who believe and follow Jesus Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Take Every Thought Captive
My husband, Garrin, had this God-given ability to know if I was in another room of the house thinking a negative thought about myself. I’d make a mess while cooking dinner or drop something on the floor and break it—and, immediately, the negative thoughts arose. Garrin would yell from wherever he was in the house, “Hey! Don’t talk to my wife like that!” The Holy Spirit always let him know when my thoughts about myself were not excellent or worthy of praise.
Don't Give Up!
In the midst of the escalating threats and declining morals we see in the world today, it’s easy to get discouraged and become fearful. Yet God always provides a witness to His love and salvation! In the Old Testament, Isaiah described the tremendous upheaval and danger that Israel faced centuries before Christ. Yet God gave this prophet a promise of the Savior yet to come, which we can read in Isaiah 7:14 (NLT): The Lord himself will give you the sign.
Persevering in the Walk of Faith
Before you Gentiles knew God, you were slaves to so-called gods that do not even exist. So now that you know God (or should I say, now that God knows you), why do you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and useless spiritual principles of this world? You are trying to earn favor with God by observing certain days or months or seasons or years. I fear for you. Perhaps all my hard work with you was for nothing.
Filling God's House
One of the last things Jesus said before He left was for us to make disciples. "Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19 NLT) It sounds straightforward, but making disciples has many variables. One is to deny ourselves and get out of our comfort zones. The Apostle Paul writes “My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.

Are You Dressed for Battle?
Obviously, when you wake up in the morning to get ready for the day, you are probably not thinking about stepping onto a battlefield, standing on the front lines of combat with no protection. In our life’s journey, both good and bad will be experienced, and we do not know what will come or when. These unexpected and unpredictable circumstances are a part of life. We cannot control, understand, or anticipate what life will offer.
Paul's Humility
Have you ever had a great revelation? Has God shown you something so great and amazing that you wanted to tell everyone? Paul told of his experience in 2 Corinthians 12. However, he did not bring attention to himself—his revelation was about his weaknesses. I don’t know how many of us could be so bold and open about what God wanted us to work on and be silent about other things that would impress many. Paul demonstrated amazing humility. Don’t misunderstand.
Overcoming False Accusations
I was at my new high school in Manila, Philippines, and still trying to make new friends. I was shy and avoided attracting attention to myself. For some reason, that year was full of embarrassing events. Many of them came from false accusations made by teachers who I held in high regard. The first incident happened in computer class. We were about to leave the computer room when my teacher noticed the ESC key on the computer I was using was missing. She became enraged and began yelling.

Lessons from Rosh Hashanah
Rosh Hashanah is a significant holiday in Jewish culture that marks the Jewish new year and is a time of reflection and renewal. While I was a student in Regent University’s School of Divinity, I briefly studied abroad in Israel and developed a deeper appreciation and understanding of Jewish culture. This newfound level of awareness led to spiritual growth that I believe all Christians can have as we draw valuable lessons from Jewish traditions such as Rosh Hashanah.
The Power of Forgiveness
Who among us has never been hurt in life? Sadly, we’ve all been hurt in some way. When I was a young girl, a close friend of our family sexually abused me. I was only 7 or 8 years old. I never spoke a word of this to anyone, but I never forgot what he did to me either. When I turned 17, every time he saw me on the street, he would offer me a ride home. I never accepted the ride and glared at him each time.
Wisdom and Understanding
The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; by his knowledge, the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew. (Proverbs 3:19-20 ESV) Within these verses, we better understand how creation came into being. It would be easy to believe, when we read the creation account in Genesis, that the only thing God did was speak, and then everything came into existence. However, those verses help bring further understanding.

Praise Him!
Praise. There are several definitions of the word praise, depending on where you look for it and the context. You can look it up in a dictionary, even go deeper and find the root of the word, but to me, the simple definition is “an action, a feeling, an emotion.” I was not familiar with this word until I became an adult and learned about it in church when I began my walk with Jesus. In my adulthood, I came to know the Lord and then began to read and study the Bible right away.
Sweeter Than Fiction
Books were my escape from reality. However, it never occurred to me that the steamy romance novels I loved so much could strongly influence my relationship with God. Some people frown upon such content while others find it amusing. I simply considered myself a “hopeful” romantic. The problem came when I would read a love story and long to have my own. I wanted to feel wanted. One March evening, I curled up with a novel about a Scottish highlander in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.
God of Spirit and Truth
God is not a God of confusion but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33). When I met Jesus, I had a heart of stone. I didn’t truly care about anyone but myself. In some way, this is true of all of us until the selfless love of God is poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). But then Jesus came to me. The Son of God rescued me from myself and gave me new life and purpose. And His Spirit began to transform my once-dead heart.
Rescue from Evil
Rescue me, Lord, from evildoers; protect me from the violent, who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up war every day. (Psalm 140:1-2 NIV) Sometimes when I’m reading the Bible, especially the Old Testament, the context seems so foreign to me. And to be honest, sometimes it seems really harsh. I’ve certainly never been a king like David, with scheming, power-hungry people plotting my demise. When he cried out for some very intense retribution, it seemed a little over-the-top to me.
Loving Like Jesus
Loving others the way God intended isn’t easy. In fact, chances are you have experienced someone in your life who made it difficult for you to love them. And perhaps you were even one of those people. If I’m honest, I know I have been. At one point in my life, I was negative and self-focused. My inability to see and be grateful for the good things in my life caused people to take a step back from me when I needed them the most.
The Value of Unity
When we decided to take in foster kids, our once peaceful home became a war zone. Every day, a new battle ensued over things that seemed so small and insignificant to me—Legos, riding the bike, and doing homework. Don’t even get me started on the arguments that took place over food! Some days, I wanted to throw my hands up and scream, “Will you please just get along?” I think I might have done that once or twice.
Dodgers Celebrate Faith & Family Day!
“When I think about Jesus, the first word that comes to mind is hope. He’s my hope! And man, this world can get crazy sometimes,” declared Los Angeles Dodgers Pitcher, Clayton Kershaw. Within the revered baseball sanctuary of Dodger Stadium – a rare post-game Sunday cathedral emerges, with a different pitch delivered by a future Hall of Famer. Before a crowd in the stadium’s seats Kershaw asks, “What anchors you, what gives you hope past this world? For us that’s Jesus.
Fruit of the Spirit - Gentleness
In Galatians 5:22-23, Paul lists the fruits of the Spirit, saying, “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” These traits are not gifts from God but rather characteristics cultivated within the believer as a result of the work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, only believers can genuinely embody these traits through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Stand Strong in Life's Storms
Those who trust in and rely on the Lord [with confident expectation] are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved but remains forever. (Psalm 125:1 AMP) Are you familiar with the hymn “Solid Rock”? The composer, William B. Bradbury, wrote the music in 1863—in the middle of the Civil War—based on the words by Edward Mote. Some of those lyrics are: My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
Honoring God Through Food
I love food—all kinds of food, and I especially enjoy an array of colors on my plate. I was born and raised in Mexico, and I'm not alone in believing that Mexico has some of the world’s best cuisine. So, yes, food is important to me. In the past, I never paid much attention to what food really did to my health. Instead, I just enjoyed the amazing satisfaction of trying new flavors and eating whatever I wanted—things like chocolate. I joke sometimes claiming myself to be a chocoholic.
Focus or Fear?
Some of my most frightening moments as a child happened when our family experienced power outages. Darkness would fill our home as my brothers and sisters and I imagined large 10-legged creatures with purple eyes and green hair lurking in the dark. Until my mom or dad lit a candle, we would huddle together, trembling from what we imagined to be in the surrounding darkness. The entrance of that spark of light brought smiles to our wide-eyed, terrified little faces, dispelling imaginary fear.
Learn the Cure for Burned-Out Syndrome
BURNED OUT Burnout can occur for many reasons, and is common in certain professions, including the military, clergy, and healthcare. As a busy physician with young children, Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith was a prime candidate. She remembers the day her chaotic life simply stopped her in her tracks: “So I did what any burned-out human would do after picking up the kids from day care. I set them in front of the TV with a snack, and I lay on the floor.” She remained there for quite a while.
The Winds and Waves Obey Him
I watched a storm roll into my backyard this morning. Chaos ensued as the serene cluster of trees at the back edge of my property went from standing motionless to swaying and bending violently in every direction. I’ve grown to love these trees over the years. It’s a privilege to live here and watch them grow. The tallest of the bunch—the sycamores—sprang up next to a creek that runs through narrow woods. The morning thunderclap was not this forest’s first rodeo.
God: Past, Present, and Future
Psalm 111:2 says, “How amazing are the deeds of the Lord! All who delight in him should ponder them” (NLT). Experts say the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. That means our God, who does not change, has revealed a lot about what we can expect from Him in the future in His Word. He is a Provider.
Steps to Confession and Repentance
Part of the Christian journey with God consists of confession and repentance. Confession is agreeing with God that what He says is right and that you are doing things that go against His Word. “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness” (1 John 1:9 NLT). It’s important to confess because your sin puts a wedge between you and God. Your sin is like a splinter that needs to be removed.
Mystery and Hidden Wisdom
My favorite books are biographies of men and women of God. I’m often captivated by the life and character of the author or person of interest. Their lives are a mystery, and I am intrigued by their values and beliefs, the circumstances they encountered, how God moved heaven and earth to aid them in their trials, and how they responded to them. In reading about these saints, my own faith is encouraged. I gained applicable wisdom for my own life, and in some small way, I felt like I got to know them.

Equipped for Eloquence
My speech problem began when I was 4 years old and, at 28, I’m still learning to accept it. Although words remain intact in my mind, they tend to twist and turn the moment syllables emerge from my lips. There are times when my voice flows naturally, unexpectedly. While other times, I choke on words so forcefully that my eyes close and my head throbs. Despite much therapy, nothing seems to tackle this hereditary ailment. In a strange way, my distorted language brings me closer to God.
Chosen by God
Rufus was on death row. His kennel bore a Heartworm Positive sign. He was a tall, skinny hound dog with big brown eyes, quietly standing in his cage looking at us, while the rest of the dogs were hopping around and barking. “Are you treating him for heartworms?” I asked the city shelter worker. “We don’t do that here,” he answered. “But if you adopt him, we’ll try to help cover the cost of treatment.” His chances of getting adopted weren’t good with the heartworm warning plastered on his cage.
Safe in the Great Shepherd's Loving Arms
O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. O that today you would listen to his voice! (Psalm 95:6-7 NRSV) A sheep’s wool is the most widely used animal fiber in the world. It is remarkably resilient, an excellent heat insulator, and more environmentally friendly than other fabrics. Sheep’s wool is used for clothing, blankets, carpeting, insulation, and upholstery.

Let Love Lead
I love the book of Romans. I feel like it’s a book that puts things plainly. In Romans 14, Paul talks about not causing others to stumble and not to judge. As I read this Scripture, I realize that Paul isn’t talking about judging the unbeliever, but the believer. We get so caught up in lesser matters in life that it causes believers to have strife with one another, which is exactly what the enemy loves to see.
Unity in the City of God
One of my most beautiful experiences while studying in Jerusalem was spontaneously singing worship songs with people from all over the world gathered in God’s Holy City for their spiritual pilgrimage. As our voices echoed off the walls of the ancient ruins, monuments, and buildings, it was a glorious display of unity through our faith in Christ; even in a city often plagued by war, debates, and attacks.
On the Other Side of Grace
Share This Devotional I have been part of a church all my life. I’m talking about every Sunday, Tuesday night, Friday night, and selling donuts as a church fundraiser on Saturdays. I remember Sundays being so uplifting and charismatic that there would be foot-stomping, hand-clapping, and people feeling so good in their souls that they would dance up and down the aisle. I belonged to the kind of church where you could always expect a good, hardy meal after the service.
Grafted in by Faith
A few years ago, I traveled to Israel on a life-changing tour of the Holy Land. Before the trip, I asked the Holy Spirit to transform me and help me know Him better through my experience. He didn’t disappoint in answering my prayer! Of all the things I learned, the history and splendor of olive trees and the process of pressing olives struck me the most. These trees are beautifully intricate and delicate yet vastly sturdy. In Israel, the olives are pressed three times.

Salvation Is for Everyone
There was something about my co-worker Dani that intrigued me. She smiled often and she had fun at work. Sometimes, I felt like I barely got through the day. I often wondered why she was so happy. What made her so joyful? It wasn’t long before we started getting to know each other. From our time spent together during lunch, I knew she went to church, and I knew she was a follower of Jesus. She invited me to church often, and every time, I turned her down.
Bask in God’s Radiant Light
Share This Devotional I love this translation of that verse. God is radiant with light! When I think of that word radiant, I think of a light that is full of colors and just pulsing with life. Sometimes in the busyness of our lives, it’s easy to forget how marvelous God is. Our spiritual senses grow dull, and our awareness of God can fade into the background. We lose sight of that radiant light. But as the lyrics from the familiar hymn by Helen H.
Fear Has No Hold on Me
Share This Devotional After having a dentist and then a doctor scream at me while I was in pain, I had a fear of doctors and refused to go to a dentist. Not only that, but when someone yelled, I would cower and even feel physical pain. This lasted many years. Then, one day, I said to myself, Enough! I was sitting in a doctor’s examination room. My son and the nurse had left to get him x-rayed. There I sat a nervous wreck, and I wasn’t even the patient.
The Mercy of God Alone
Share This Devotional Desperate. No other word captures how I felt that cold January morning in 1988. The life in my womb was still and the hospital had not been able to stop my bleeding. My son was due in May, four months away. This small coastal hospital had no obstetric anything, not even the special stethoscope to hear a baby’s heartbeat. I had no idea if my baby was still alive or not.
