A Case For Concrete
The residents of Danny’s House were eager to have a house that challenged convention and offered a resilient counterpoint to the ephemeral nature of the Queenslander. “The clients wanted privacy, open plan living, lots of concrete and gardens,” says Shaun Lockyer, principal of Lockyer Architects, in describing the brief for a contemporary extension in the inner city neighbourhood of New Farm, Brisbane.

The Green Room presents Fauna & Flora
Creatives are to green rooms like moths to a flame. The Green Room in Surry Hills, Sydney, is no exception — and its natural allure is even stronger this October. Situated auspiciously in relation to the creative bubble of innermost Sydney, on Crown Street in Surry Hills, The Green Room isn’t really a green room at all — least not in colour nor backstage of a theatre.
Hijjas Kasturi Is A Restless Type
Ostensibly retired, Hijjas Kasturi remains a defining figure in Malaysian architecture – for his iconic buildings and for the cultural and environmental philanthropy of he and his Australian wife, Angela. Halfway between Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the city, either from the freeway or the train, you will see on your left the dynamically twisting Menara Telekom tower on the horizon.
Peter Colquhoun Opens 2020 Sustainability Awards Registrations
Registration to the 2020 Sustainability Awards is now open and who better to give us the lowdown than Peter Colquhoun. For the last 14 years, well-known media personality Peter Colquhoun has been the resident architect on Australia’s number one lifestyle show Better Homes and Gardens. Colquhoun was also awarded a National architectural prize for his work on the re-design and build of the North Bondi Surf Club. So it was only fitting to have him open the 2020 Sustainability Awards registrations.
Sussex Taps Champion Australian Manufacturing
This year we’ve seen a renewed interest in the local design and manufacturing sector, but Melbourne-based Sussex Taps have been silent champions of the cause for almost three decades. While access to global suppliers and manufacturing services has been severely limited – and tensions with China are at an all-time high – as a result of the global pandemic, local manufacture and production has never felt more pressing. But this is a cause Sussex Taps have been championing since the early 90s.
The Art Of Homemaking
Terrace houses don’t need to be forbidding dark tunnels, as this light- and art-filled continuous space in Sydney’s Paddington demonstrates. In the street there are some grand two-storey terrace houses that typically have a basement area below street level. Having lived in such a basement flat in this same street I can vouch for the fact that they are dark and gloomy. Despite the rear being north-oriented, the street elevation on the south typically contributes no light to the basement areas.
Beautiful Outside And In
This home in Melbourne makes quite the statement. Yet like the Vivid Slimline range from Phoenix Tapware less is more and a few iconic elements of design is enough to make a lasting impression. This house in Camberwall, Melbourne, casts an impressive shadow that is in stark contrast to its neighbours along the residential streetscape. The charred-timber façade creates a barn-like aesthetic with contemporary flair.

What Will Artificial Intelligence Look Like In The Domestic Environment?
Pre-programmed seat warmers are just the beginning. Artificial Intelligence is poised to enter the domestic milieu. Artificial Intelligence has already made significant inroads into our daily lives, notably in the form of digital voice assistants like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa that respond to our requests though patterns of learned behaviour.
Here’s How You Can Enjoy Sydney Contemporary 2020

Overlooking a creek, this unique block is tucked away in a quiet pocket of Blackburn, shielded from the busyness of the greater suburb by an atmosphere of country-style living.
AMP Design Co Make Life Look Effortlessly Resolved
By taking inspiration from Japanese design elements, AMP Design Co. gave this pared-back apartment a minimalist aesthetic. AMP Design Co. borrows from Japanese design elements to fashion a pared-back apartment with a serene ambience for this family. A minimalist aesthetic keeps the interiors easy to maintain. Three Years In The Making And Worth Every Minute
After three successful years of Merivale’s Coogee Pavilion, patrons hyped up the mysteriously closed middle level. Now, with the help of ACME, that middle level is now open. Three years after Coogee Pavilion opened its doors – to the ground and rooftop levels at least – Merivale revealed the highly anticipated middle level.
Allen Jack + Cottier design a place for horses and humans
This house and horse pavilion, designed by Allen Jack + Cottier, has given a herd of wild brumbies freedom and choice and the opportunity to express their wildness. Built structures are typically about containment – containing movement and living within walls and fences. Eumundi House, in contrast, is designed for freedom. “Freedom of choice, freedom of movement and freedom of living,” says Lynn Scott.

One Smart Design Manoeuvre After Another
With artful strokes that bring in light and open up space, this old Tiong Bahru walk-up apartment is now someone’s dream home. When merchandiser Denise Thomas bought this conserved Tiong Bahru walk-up apartment, she knew it was going to be a major renovation exercise. “I bought it from the original owners. Given the spatial configuration, it was really dark inside and you couldn’t even read in the living area during the day without turning the lights on,” she recalls.

This House For A Daughter Has Healthy Boundaries
Airy, but not empty. Khuôn Studio’s House for a Daughter is a poetic multi-generational home designed to give everyone ample breathing room. In cultures across Asia, there are only a few valid reasons to move out of your parents’ home. The most acceptable one is getting married and building your own family. Moving to a faraway place for a job or for pursuing higher education is also fine.
House Lincoln Grew With Its Family
When the residents of a 1950s bungalow faced the ‘move or improve?’ dilemma, they opted for the latter – calling on THOSE Architects to make staying a reality. As is the case for many growing families, space became an issue for the owners of a typical 1950s Californian brick bungalow in Sydney’s Lane Cove. They loved the original design and the area, but for a husband, wife and two young girls, there just wasn’t enough room.
