Temporal disobedience: Intersex timescapes, chronopolitics and intersex joy
Abstract This article theorizes inter time as a critical intervention into normative life courses governed by whiteness, cisheteronormativity, able-bodiedness and endonormativity. We explore how intersex people are positioned as temporal disruptions: outside, behind, or threatening to linear, coherent timelines of birth, reproduction, productivity, and death.
10 Books About Intersex Identity
Stories by and for intersex people are sparse. Throughout history, stigma has prevented intersex authors from publicly sharing their identities, so we don’t have an extensive intersex archive. We don’t yet have an intersex “canon.” But we’re making one. We’re acknowledging and celebrating the legacies we do have. We’re creating legacies for future intersex folks. When I first received confirmation of my intersex variation, I knew a grand total of one out intersex person.
Cripping Intersex
Intersex and/as/is/with disability. The political, discursive, and embodied connections between intersex and disability deserve nuanced attention if we are to strengthen intersex human rights claims and reflect the experiences of intersex people living with the disabling consequences of medical intervention.
7 Ways to Make Teenage Rejection of Parents Easier to Handle
“No offense, but you’re always whining about us being on screens or doing the wrong thing.” “Can you just not come inside so my friends don’t see you?” “I don’t want you to hug me anymore.” These are just some of the ways our teens and tweens let us know they want more independence and less of our presence. And even though we know from our own teen and tween days that this is natural, teenage rejection of parents still stings.
15 Examples of Boundaries in a Relationship
“Why do we have to go there for Christmas again? I just want to stay home.” We’ve all heard it from our kids at least once, and we’ve probably all said it, too. My parents tell me I was the queen of saying this when I was young—and not just at Christmas, but all year long.
How to Not Be Bitter: 22 Things Moms Can Do
“Why am I always the one who has to _____?” Boy, can I fill in the blank on that sentence, especially when hard days with long lists come my way—start the laundry, make the coffee, fix dinner, vacuum, do the dishes, scrub the toilets. I’m also pretty good at this little gem too: “It sure would be nice if someone would help me once in a while.” It’s easy to go there when busyness and overloaded schedules and stress creep into our families.
How I Made Myself Stop Scrolling
While watching a ’90s movie with my kids recently, I found myself daydreaming about life before smartphones. In my daydream, we didn’t think in Instagram captions. No one had to worry about news notifications interrupting our morning devotions or exercise. And I certainly didn’t spend a Sunday afternoon wound tightly with anxiety, wondering why my free time flew by while I was unable to stop scrolling. That’s when I knew my relationship with my phone was affecting me.
Orr: At least the Winter Olympics aren't challenging women's sexual identity
Ladies' snowboard slopestyle silver medallist Laurie Blouin of Canada celebrates a great performance, left, in South Korea this week. At right, Caster Semenya, African track athlete, is pictured. Sexist and racist attitudes dog women at the Summer Olympics, but aren't as prevalent for the winter games, argues Celeste Orr. I am struck by the difference between Winter and Summer Olympics media coverage and commentary.
