Tony Stella: Film is My Absolute Obsession
illustration by Tony Stella If you’re lucky enough in this life, you’ll have a chance to cross paths with a legend or two, and if you’re even luckier, you’ll get to meet one who’s not only a master of their craft, but also a genuinely kind and humble person, full of integrity and humor and spirit, with a fan’s passion and obsession that matches or exceeds your own—someone still so deeply in touch with the love and joy at the center of what they do that it can’t help but make you love their...

Writing About Elaine May: An Interview with Carrie Courogen
It’s not every day that someone you know writes a biography about one of your favorite filmmakers, let alone one that receives heaps of praise from The New Yorker and several other prominent places, ultimately emerging as a dream summer read for any obsessive cinephile. But delightfully, that’s just what my good friend Carrie Courogen has done.

Nobody Told You To Suffer

Letter from the Editor
As far back as I can remember, 1999 always seemed like a year worth paying attention to. As a kid growing up in the 80s, it seemed almost like the end of time somehow, as far out as you could possibly imagine. A new millennium didn’t make sense, and as we sat in the kids’ area of all those aerobics classes our moms dragged us along to, we could hear Prince through the paper-thin walls, singing to us about the end of the world. They say 2000-Zero-Zero party over, oops, out of time.

The Bright Wall/Dark Room Podcast, Ep. #21
For our annual fashionably late “Best Of” issue, we’re looking at a 2022 highlight: Charlotte Wells’s staggering debut feature Aftersun, featuring film critic, author, and educator Adam Nayman. Adam shares special insights from his conversation with Wells about the film, plus the case for cinematic mystery, Paul Mescal crying, analog devices and the technology of memory, good karaoke scenes, fatherhood feelings, and why 2022 stinker The Whale stumbles precisely where Aftersun soars.

Episode #15: Ishtar (1987)
This month, we’re traveling back to 1987 to wax ecstatic about Elaine May’s much (unfairly) maligned box office failure, Ishtar. We match May’s compassion for the brashly stupid Chuck and Lyle (Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty, respectively) as Chad explains his personal connection to the movie, Veronica wonders how (and if) the movie successfully balances its many threads, and guest Frank Falisi lays out his theory that this is a high musical à la Vincente Minnelli.
Another Round (2020): What A Life
“Dance is the hidden language of the soul.” -Martha Graham It almost feels like magic, when he finally starts to dance. He’d feinted at it moments earlier, offering a few tantalizing steps while weaving his way through a festive crowd of high school graduates. Sitting down to catch his breath, half-drunk and still wearing the suit he’d worn to his friend’s funeral hours before, he looks out over the water. He takes a breath, a pause.
The Whole and Every Grain of Sand
illustration by Tony Stella “Existence seems to me now the most remarkable thing that could ever be imagined.” –Marilynne Robinson, Gilead It’s been over ten years now, but I still remember the way it felt to walk back into the world after watching The Tree of Life for the very first time. It was an old feeling, or perhaps a very young one—a simple curiosity and awe at everything all around me, at everything simply existing.

illustration by Brianna Ashby He is forty minutes late. I am sitting on a bench in Central Park. I have been waiting motionless and the pigeons have claimed the seat next to me. The six-dollar pistachio hot chocolate I bought for him is cold now. My phone buzzes loudly and sends the pigeons scattering.
Kenneth Lonergan on You Can Count on Me
Twenty years ago, right around this time of year, I walked into a small arthouse theater in Seattle to watch an independent film I’d been hearing a lot of good things about. This was not a particularly uncommon thing for me to do at the time—I was 22, recently graduated from college, and working at the kind of video store where everybody talked excitedly about movies all day long. But it was certainly no guarantee that the movie itself would actually be any good.
