The landscape of US radiology has changed substantially in just a few decades. One of the most profound changes is in the size of private practice groups. Sunshine and Bansal [ ] reported that in 1989, “almost half of U.S. radiology groups had two to four radiologists, almost one-fourth had five to seven radiologists, 12% had eight to 10 radiologists, and 14% had 11 or more.” The authors further noted that this had been stable since 1986.
Failure. For most radiologists, failure has not been a recurrent theme in our careers. In fact, repeated rounds of triumphs are exactly how we were able to successfully complete 4 years of medical school, numerous standardized tests and board examinations, and years of post–medical school training to stand where we are today.
