What does it mean to be a journalist?

To me, being a journalist means helping people make sense of the world through accurate, fair, and meaningful reporting. It’s about asking difficult questions, verifying facts, listening carefully, and turning complex issues into stories people can understand and use. Journalism also carries a responsibility to hold institutions and powerful individuals accountable while giving voice to perspectives that might otherwise be overlooked. At its best, it informs the public, encourages thoughtful conversation, and builds trust through transparency and integrity. Beyond reporting facts, being a journalist requires curiosity, persistence, empathy, and the discipline to follow evidence wherever it leads.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I prefer concise, well-targeted pitches that quickly explain why the story matters now, why it fits my coverage area, and what’s genuinely new or surprising about it. A strong subject line, a short summary in the body of the email, and links to supporting material or data are ideal. The best pitches are personalized and show an understanding of the kinds of stories I cover rather than sending a generic blast. I’m especially interested in pitches that offer original reporting angles, credible sources, access to experts, or clear real-world impact. Email is the best way to reach me. Please avoid overly promotional language, large attachments, or follow-up messages within the same day unless the story is truly time-sensitive.
