The UAPs: A gaze into alien life
Your browser does not support the audio element. (Sounds of UAPs) (ANONYMOUS STUDENT): “Went out to this area called the Flushes down in Utah, and it's like a desert area with old mining activity. We were driving, we came over this hill and there was like a really bright light.” (LIEB): A student at the University of Montana who wishes to stay anonymous had an unusual run-in with alien hunters in Utah.
The fish: An uncertain fate of Arctic grayling in Montana
Your browser does not support the audio element. (Sounds of a river flowing) (LIEB): Montana could lose one of its crown jewels because of rising river temperatures due to low river flows if ranchers and conservationists can’t find a workable solution. A fish that looks like a computer rendering of a child's drawing, the Arctic grayling has the typical body of a fish that comes to mind when thinking about something like a salmon, but with awkwardly large fins.
The Haunting of Brantly Hall
The University of Montana campus has long held a reputation of being a tad spooky, with stories of ghost dogs, haunted dorms and eerie tunnels beneath students’ feet. Over the last five years, the Kaimin Paranormal Investigative Team has attempted to verify those claims in some of the scariest buildings on campus. The ghost hunt in 2019 in Main Hall failed to turn up much evidence, but it did grace us with the knowledge that President Seth Bodnar thinks the place has a “paranormal” vibe.

The University of Montana campus has long held a reputation for being a tad spooky, with stories of ghost dogs, haunted dorms and eerie tunnels beneath students’ feet. Over the last five years, the Kaimin Paranormal Investigative Team has attempted to verify those claims in some of its spookiest buildings. This Halloween, we're back with an investigation of Brantly Hall that just might be our scariest yet, complete with a trip into UM's legendary creepy tunnels.
Bozeman attorney seeks to upset sitting Attorney General
Ask Bozeman attorney Ben Alke what prompted him to launch his long-shot campaign to unseat Attorney General Austin Knudsen and he is quick to rattle off stories of what he sees as partisan overreaching by Knudsen. Back in 2021, for example, Knudsen sent Montana Highway Patrol officers to question hospital officials about their unwillingness to prescribe Ivermectin to a Covid patient.
All eyes on Montana: The Kaimin voting guide
Editor's note: These stories have been edited for print. For the full pieces, please visit the News tab. This year, the state of Montana has been thrown into the middle of political races that involve the University of Montana and its students more than you might think. From the ads that pop up while you’re trying to watch the Mormon moms TikTok show to the fliers filling your mailboxes in between your Amazon packages, one thing is clear: Nationally and statewide, candidates want the student vote.

The observer: A glimpse of astronomy at UM
Your browser does not support the audio element. (Sounds of the observatory) (LIEB): On the outskirts of Missoula, there’s a network of windy mountain roads leading to scenic overlooks, makeshift shooting ranges and seemingly endless backwoods. Forest Road 365 contributes to this labyrinth of dirt pathways. But at the end lies the Blue Mountain Observatory, a half-dome structure that stands alone, tucked into the side of a grassy slope surrounded by a horizon decorated with mountaintops.
The gamer: Breaking stereotypes of ‘nerd culture’
Your browser does not support the audio element. (Sounds of video games being played) (LIEB): Typically, when someone thinks of a professional gamer, a soldier is the last thing you’d expect. But on the University of Montana Esports team, that seems to be the norm. At night in the quiet University Center, one room on the second floor was buzzing. A dozen UM students were trying out to be a Griz player.
