A great thinker who shaped Scotland’s contract law
Stephen Bogle £90, Oxford University Press The advancement of learning is often to be found in the way seemingly irreconcilable ideas jostle together in conflict but somehow emerge in harmony. Even so, given the extraordinary levels of conflict in the 17th century, the prospects of finding such a synthesis in that era would seem bleak.
Blackstone's Civil Practice 2023
A detailed and accessible commentary Blackstone’s Civil Practice 2023 Edited by Stuart Sime and Derek French £310, Oxford University Press ★★★★★ When I was a trainee in the civil litigation department, I came across various books providing detailed commentary on the Civil Procedure Rules – and I had heard about Blackstone’s Civil Practice in all its glory. We now have to publish some costs information on our websites. But perhaps cost comparison sites are something for the future.

Or a book about retirement, billed as the ‘longest holiday of your life’. The choice is yours “What we want… is a change.” “You know what I mean,” he said, “a complete change.” The question was how to get it.’ So begins Three Men on the Bummel, first published in 1900 by Jerome K. Jerome who wrote the better known Three Men in a Boat.
