One Last Thing: A Final Word (For Now) on the Venice Dell Project
VENICE - My previous Op-Ed for The Westside Current—the one inspired by the Paris Olympics—was posted last August when I challenged/begged the leadership of LA28 to step in and Save Venice by working directly with Councilwoman Traci Park to develop the Venice Median as an International Visitors Center. This would allow the city and the residential community to implement a more environmentally sound, community-based, affordable housing project on Venice’s last parcel of open space.
One More Thing: What is LA28 Going to Do with Venice and The Venice Median Project? Volume 9
VENICE - For the past two weeks I have been grappling with the best way to explain (rationalize?) the decision by the Coalition for Safe Coastal Development to withdraw its appeal against a judge’s ruling in the CEQA case (*)– and, sadly, I must confess, for the past two weeks, I have been stumped. Didn’t know how to begin because I didn’t know what to say.
One More Thing: With Apologies to Regina Weller, Volume Number 8
VENICE - I have been chomping at the bit to write my upcoming One More Thing about alternative policies that could have/should have been driving our response to the “crisis” of homelessness by instituting better rehabilitative approaches – in sharp contrast to the troubled (can I say shi**y?) “affordable” housing proposal that has gone nowhere in eight years of futility, finger pointing, and deception.
One More Thing: Volume #7, Brutalist Architecture – and The Road(s) Not Taken
LOS ANGELES - One More Thing, an easy-to-follow, never boring, bi-weekly platform designed as a series of personalized/bite-sized pieces – a municipal social history, if you will – which we realize might be your first exposure to the issues, the players, the intrigue, and the high stakes bull shit that makes this epic land-use battle on The Venice Median a must read.

One More Thing: The Venice Median, Volume Two
VENICE - One More Thing, an easy-to- follow, never boring, bi-weekly platform designed as a series of personalized/ bite-sized pieces – a municipal social history, if you will – which shares what we’ve seen, what we’ve learned, and what frames the questions that still need to be asked-and-answered about the Venice Median before we let the political leadership in the city and the state spend any more on this misbegotten approach to public policy so that homeless advocates can put funds...
One More Thing: The Venice Median - Volume One

OPINION: What the Judges and the LA Times Got Wrong About The Venice Median Project (and Why it Ain’t Over Till it’s Over)
VENICE - We seriously doubt whether the Op-Ed writers who penned last week’s editorial for the ideologically-driven LA Times praising Judge Richard Fruin’s dispiriting dismissal of our CEQA case have ever opted to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon in summer exploring what a recent poll in Travel and Leisure described as ‘America’s Favorite Beach.’ How else can you explain the Op-Ed writers’ description of our area’s last parcel of open space– a large, 2.65-acre, parking lot designed to...

A Year in The Life with The Coastal Commission: A Tale of Community Advocacy in 3 Parts
Editors Note: This is part 1 of a 3 part series that takes an intimate look at the intricate web of politics, environmental concerns, and community activism that swirls around the California Coastal Commission. VENICE - As a student at Cal Berkely in the early 70’s, I actually signed the petition that put the Coastal Act on the ballot.
Opinion: Venice Community Housing and The Politics of Omission
VENICE - State Assemblymember Tina McKinnor, ex-CD11 politico, Mike Bonin, and some left-leaning activists from LA Forward have banded together to rally their partisans to support Venice Community Housing's Executive Director, Becky Dennison’s troubled Venice Median Project, which they ironically call the “Venice-Dell Community”, a misnomer if there ever was one – almost as bogus as referring to its 460sq.
Opinion: Thanks for The Hit Piece LA Times; Venice Needed a Wake-Up Call
VENICE - Last year around this time, the Westside Current agreed to publish my unbridled assessment of the editorial biases and declining journalistic standards of my hometown newspaper, in which I took the Times to task for its failure to use its considerable resources to educate its readers about a complicated land-use battle that has been going on for seven years in Venice, effectively ignoring the myriad of problems and missteps the powers-that-be have had trying to develop “Affordable”...

Column: Mike Doesn’t Do Apologies
Full Disclosure #4. Although my antipathy to Mr. Bonin is no secret, like so many others, I felt badly hearing excerpts from Nury’s rhetorical assault on family values in the middle of what mostly was odious, off-the-record, bare-knuckled, strategy session about the reapportionment of the City Council along racial lines.
Smear Campaign In CD11: Hypocrisy Runs Amok
Full Disclosure #3 I met Traci Park two days before she announced her candidacy at a small ‘Meet and Greet’ at Arbor, Venice’s premiere skate shop. The three things that impressed me most were: a) she listens, looks you in eye, then gives thoughtful responses b) I thought her extensive knowledge of municipal law, repping a diverse group of cities in Southern California, would serve her well on The Council in that she would know how other jurisdictions handle common problems.
Column: 39,000 People Weren’t Wrong. How Darling Fits Into the Picture
Full Disclosure #2: I participated in most of the clandestine Wednesday Night Zoom calls in April and May of 2021 where ten-to-twelve of us with virtually no campaign experience would explore how to implement the campaign to Recall Mr. Bonin. Our goal was to expose Mike’s failed policies re: Housing First, The Ballona Wetlands, The Mar Vista Road Diet., the encampments on Ocean Front Walk, The Venice Median, etc.
Column: 39,000 People Weren’t Wrong. Here’s Why.
Full Disclosure #1: I have never actually spoken to Mike Bonin. I tried once. Made a $100 donation to The Lantern House for the expressed purpose of handing over a folder full of signed petitions from my neighbors in The Silver Triangle to have our crumbling streets repaved after 80 years of neglect.
Column: No, It's Not An Opinion. You're Just Wrong
A couple of weeks ago, The Westside Current gave me the space to express my dismay (in two parts) over the ideological orientation of my hometown newspaper during this election cycle. Part One focused on the LA Times decision not to cover any news involving the divisive Venice Median Project for the past six years, including the unprecedented decision by The California Coastal Commission to label the developer's application as INCOMPLETE, requesting detailed answers in 22 separate categories.
Part II: Erin and Traci: Be Truthful. Be Civil. And Please Save The Political Culture of Our City While You’re at It
I was chatting with Traci Park last April, moments before The CD11 Candidate's Forum at The Hotel Erwin, sponsored by The Westside Current and Circling the News, was about to begin. Traci was still taken aback by the final question asked by the two young women from The LA Times Editorial Board interviewing her for a potential endorsement. They wanted to know why on earth Traci thought she could get along with other members of The City Council.
Erin and Traci: Be Truthful. Be Civil. And Please Save The Political Culture of Our City While You’re at It
The once proud and respected Los Angeles Times published what it must have thought would be a reassuring editorial over Labor Day weekend—the "unofficial" start of the fall campaign season—by promising its readers that its endorsements will "cut through the campaign hyperbole to offer carefully researched opinions on ballot measures and major races locally." The Times Editorial Board went on to declare that the management of its highly partisan Opinion pages remains separate from its...
Misinformation Drives Venice Canal’s Housing Project and Apparent Land Grab
challenging the wisdom of our City Council’s continued support for a massive “affordable” (ha) housing project situated at the apex of an environmentally-challenged flood zone, in the historical Venice Canals that some of us have been fighting for the past six years.
Sound The Alarm: Ignore the Venice Median Project at Your Own Peril
Details Charles Rosin 20 February 2022 VENICE POLITICS - This Thursday, The LA City Planning Commission will be holding its second Public Hearing on the controversial Venice Median Project-- after unanimously voting to approve it seven months earlier despite some serious pushback from The Venice Neighborhood Council, and its land use planning committee, which, as you might expect, unanimously opposed the project. Same thing with our esteemed City Council.
A Personal Plea to Members of The Los Angeles City Council
LOS ANGELES- A week after voters passed Proposition HHH in November, 2016 – freeing $1.2 Billion for 10,000 Affordable and Permanent Supportive Houses -- I started tracking the City’s plans for The Venice Median once its Chief Administrative Officer revealed that “The Dell-Pacific Parking Lot’ would anchor the first wave of eight city-owned properties targeted for Permanent Supportive Housing– with Hollywood Community Housing and Venice Community Housing (VCH) being chosen to develop what was...
