The Best Goethe Books
recommended by David E. Wellbery A New History of German Literature by David E. Wellbery Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) has been described as ‘the last true polymath to walk the earth’. A defining figure in German literature, Goethe coined the concept of world literature. And his literary and dramatic achievements are matched by his scientific work. David E.
The Best Augustine Books
recommended by Catherine Conybeare The Routledge Guidebook to Augustine's Confessions by Catherine Conybeare Christianity has been profoundly influenced by Augustine of Hippo (354-430 CE), but the fifth-century North African bishop has impacted almost every area of western thought: philosophy, theology, political theory, linguistics, and rhetoric. His Confessions is one of the most recommended titles on Five Books, but is it really the first autobiography?
The Best Franz Kafka Books
recommended by Stanley Corngold The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka (ed. and translated by Stanley Corngold) "When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin"—Kafka, The Metamorphosis. This is one of the most famous opening lines in all of world literature, but how ‘Kafkaesque’ was Franz Kafka? What are our misconceptions about his life and work?
Shakespeare's Sources
How many of Shakespeare’s plays can we say are wholly original to him and not based on a pre-existing work? Two, I think. In the first case, we haven’t found a source for the main plot of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Of course, Pyramus and Thisbe derive from Ovid; you can find precedents for certain scenes in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. And he’d done lovers crossed before—say, in Venus and Adonis or Two Gentlemen of Verona.

Five Books: Will McMorran recommends the best books on the Marquis de Sade
Could you just start by telling me about who the Marquis de Sade was? The Marquis de Sade was an aristocrat from a Provençal family, born in 1740. Born to a very old – and he was very proud of this – noble family. He could date his aristocracy way back to the twelfth century and that was very important to him. He grew up in a royal household for the first few years of his life.

Letter: Why don't Coyotes buy their current arena?
What a great idea one of your readers had in regards to the Coyotes' arena. The owners are willing to put up $170 million for a new arena. Instead, they could pay $150 million to pay off the debt that is owed to the City Of Glendale for the present arena and invest another $20 million to remodel. This way, they could own their arena and not have to depend on the City Of Glendale.
