This room is also called the sitting room considering its function as a room for socializing by sitting in a chair. There are also those who call it the vestibule, given its location which is right near the front door. In large houses built in the past, a private living room is provided near the bedroom, such as the Queen's Sitting Room and the Lincoln Sitting Room in the White House.

If the Western-style living room is furnished with sofas, chairs, coffee tables, table lamps and fireplaces, then the traditional Japanese living room is equipped with a kind of mat or mat called a tatami.
