Oscar Wilde, the 70s, and psychiatrists: The Importance of Being Nihilists
What made you want to write the play? I drafted an initial, much shorter version of the play in Year 13 while studying The Importance of Being Earnest for A Level. I wrote all the parts with my classmates in mind, and at the time it was just a bit of a laugh. Last term, when I was dipping a tentative toe into Oxford drama, I discovered that all you had to do to put on a play was get a bid together.
New writing in Oxford: An interview with Shaw Worth and Kirsty Miles
In Week 4 of this term, the Burton Taylor Studio will welcome a double bill of new student plays from Love Song Productions: Wednesday, Death Meditation by Shaw Worth, and She Felt Fear by Kirsty Miles. Ahead of the plays’ opening nights next week, Cherwell Stage spoke to the two writer/directors about Tibet, Taylor Swift, and the process of bringing your own writing to the stage. What made you want to write this play?
'Persevering through anything': An interview with the cast and crew of Sweeney Todd
You’ve seen the posters, the flyers, the trailer… Ahead of 00Productions’ Sweeney Todd opening at the Oxford Playhouse this week, Cherwell Stage spoke to Director Imogen Albert, Musical Director Isaac Adni, Producer Harvey Dovell, and leads Daniel McNamee (Sweeney) and Maggie Moriarty (Mrs Lovett) about Sondheim, sitzprobes, and the challenges of bringing a large-scale musical to life in a pandemic. What made you want to get involved with this project?
Romeo and Juliet - Preview
SquidInk Theatre’s production of Romeo and Juliet at the Keble O’Reilly this week places the tale of gang warfare in a female offenders unit: HM Prison Verona. It is a production that promises to challenge audience preconceptions of the Shakespearean canon, as well as advance a conversation about women in the Criminal Justice System.
Interview with Bea Udale-Smith
We chat to Bea-Udale Smith ahead of her upcoming production of 'Travesties' on how to get involved with directing at Oxford How does it feel to be directing an adaptation of a play by such a renowned living playwright?
Upcoming Trinity Theatre - a guide
After careful research – namely an investigation of Caroline Flack’s Twitter and recalling when ‘exam lifestyle’ (read: McCoys and reality television) began last year – it appears that Love Island will not return until early June. This leaves an intimidating stretch of empty time to fill, so Cherwell Theatre has selected the productions which will drag you from the edge of despair.
Best of Hilary Theatre
Before Hilary inevitably blurs into half-remembered haze, Cherwell contributors reflect upon the student productions which particularly lingered in their minds. Take a chance to refresh your memory of this term’s standout shows. ‘Twelfth Night’ at the Keble O’Reilly – The Post-Truth Theatre Company Alice Taylor’s production of Twelfth Night at the Keble O’Reilly in January was a truly immersive experience.
Five minutes with… Sos Eltis
I’ve been a senior member for Ouds for the last 18 or so years – at first alongside Adam Swift, then with Kirsten Shepherd-Barr and now with Ros Ballaster. How long have you been working with OUDS for? At least 18 years – possibly longer, but I can’t remember precisely. I’m finally stepping down this year, as the Proctors have declared that no-one should be a senior member for more than three years – so my retirement is rather overdue. Were you involved with drama as a student at Oxford?
Five Minutes With… Hugh Tappin
How did you get involved in drama? When I started at Oxford, I always knew I wanted to be involved in drama. I’d done a lot of acting at school, and back then it was sort of a pipe dream idea that I wanted to go into acting. I knew I wanted to get involved, and so I started out with Cuppers. I directed a really, really bad St John’s Cuppers play, and that was basically it! What’s your happiest memory of drama at Oxford? My happiest memory?
Five minutes with: Audrey, the mysterious figurehead of The Oxford Revue
Could you tell us a bit about your involvement with Oxford arts? Casual, passionate, bric-a-brac. I’m a bit of a best-kept-secret, really. A 1983 Cherwell article (they were still painted on papyrus then) called me ‘Uncontested Queen of the Oxford Night’, despite widespread misgivings. Any more questions? Can you tell us a bit about The Oxford Revue?
Five minutes with: Lucy Hayes
Could you tell us a bit about how you got involved with drama at Oxford? I was trying to convince my friend to produce a play for me, so I took her to an OUDS producing workshop. From that, I was asked to produce a show at the Playhouse. I had no idea what a producer really did, but I knew I’d be stupid not to. What’s your happiest memory of Oxford drama? They’ve all been pretty happy! I actually don’t think I have any bad memories of doing drama at Oxford at all.
Five Minutes With… John Livesey
This week, we chat to John Livesey, the manager of Klaxon Productions. Could you tell us a bit about how you got involved in Oxford drama? It can be scary to start ‘doing drama’ at Oxford – it feels like people know each other already, and you are just some strange, quiet fresher. I was really lucky that the first show I got involved in (Edward II) had a very big, very friendly company full of drama stalwarts. It meant I didn’t think twice next time I was going for an audition.
Five minutes with Philippa Lawford, director of Tightrope Productions
How did you get involved in drama at Oxford? I directed Regents Park College’s Cuppers play – we did an extract from ‘Mercury Fur’. It was such a fun experience and I became friends with Kiya Evans and Alex Jacobs, who I now work with on everything (Kiya produces and Alex does our tech). What’s your happiest memory of drama at Oxford? I had an amazing time at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this summer with ‘Sex Education’, which I directed.
