Caregiver's Lifeline
At some point we’ve all seen the TV commercial showing a senior who has fallen and needs assistance. This concept first appeared in an advertisement for a service to help elderly or infirm people get emergency help without having to get to the phone. Today, a number of companies offer a medical alert system which can be a tremendous help to caregivers and loved ones. Each system has slightly different features, but they operate on the same principle. The handheld remote has a radio transmitter.

He is a gentle soul and loves snuggling.
When MS Means Mighty Stubborn
“I’m glad my MS isn’t too bad. My life is too busy to have it interfere!” These words could be uttered by many individuals with MS, regardless of how severe the affliction has become in their lives. Caregivers may shrink in horror whenever they are said, dreading the inevitable outcome of an event preceded by this statement. Husbands may growl and curse, mowing lawns and doing other chores around the home, refusing to admit that they may be putting themselves in harm’s way.

Keeping the Home in Medical Equipment
The varieties of situations caregivers deal with on a yearly basis often include one or more experiences with medical equipment brought into the home. Medical supply companies deal in everything from oxygen to diabetic supplies, depending on the company. While caregivers breathe a sigh of relief when the medical supplies are first delivered, prolonged exposure can add to stress. Who Pays The Price?
Lung Cancer Care
Coping with the diagnosis of cancer is only the beginning of the journey. The entire process of diagnosis, treatment and changes in lifestyle are day by day hurdles for both caregiver and loved one. Lung cancer’s association with smoking, second hand smoke and environmental irritants such as asbestos are factors that modify how one handles the diagnosis.
Solving the Driving Dilemma
Long Distance Caregiving can be challenging—and one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Caroline H. Sheppard shares her story of how she was called to oversee the care of five different family members over a fifteen year period from afar. There are many “how to” books on caregiving, but few share their story-the raw emotions, the exhaustion and that show how, in the end the caregiver gains wonderful gifts, lessons and a deepened love and understanding for those they help.
Managing Lung Disease
The lungs oversee the body’s oxygen needs by taking in air deep into their corridors (called bronchi), allowing for oxygen and carbon dioxide to filter in and out of the blood. The dance of oxygen exchange becomes more complicated with inhaled pollutants of different kinds, such as tobacco smoke, pollution and congestion from infections.
Advance Directives
Trying to predict the future when diagnosed with a debilitating illness leaves caregiver and loved one with many, sometimes confusing, alternatives. Advance directives, such as a living will, can provide families with some comfort. There are online living wills that can be printed, estate lawyers who help with end-of-life planning through and designating a medical power of attorney.
Finding Adult Day Care Options
GUEST ARTICLE The Sandwich Generation by Kathleen Bogolea, MS Since the adoption of the National Family Caregiver Support Program in late 2000, there have been numerous news articles and points of interests written about the family caregiver and their many different roles within the family and the community. Roughly, it is estimated that American families provide 80 to 90 percent of all in-home long term care services for their aging family members, disabled adult children and other loved ones.
Finding Adult Day Care Options
Caregivers who are just beginning their journey may feel adult day care services are for later stages of their loved one’s situation. The sooner caregivers locate and enroll their family member in a program, the greater the benefit for all concerned. Finding the appropriate day care can be challenging, but has grown much easier over time. More adult day care centers are popping up in different areas.

Caregiver Guilt and Finding Balance
Lord make me like a mighty oak Roots curling into the earth Strong and steady That my Love might lean upon me And rest Lord make me like a mighty oak Flexible enough to sway in the wind Rocking gently That my Love might rock with me And be comforted Lord make me like a mighty oak Speaking as the winds blow through Whispering softly That my Love might listen And be soothed Lord make me like a mighty oak Facing even the fiercest storm Standing Tall That my Love might take shelter And draw...
