A three-stage approach to multi-architecture migration
Member post by Cheryl Hung, Senior Director, Infrastructure Ecosystem, at Arm A recent trend in cloud-native development is the use of multi-architecture infrastructures, which can run workloads on either x86 or Arm architectures. At a high level, the goal of running a multi-architecture infrastructure on a public cloud is to have workloads run on the best hardware for the task, without developers being concerned with the underlying architecture. But that doesn’t mean it’s an easy goal to obtain.
The Insider’s Guide to Building a Multi-Arch Infrastructure
Multi-architecture infrastructures let workloads run on the best hardware for the task (x86- or Arm-based) and can optimize price/performance ratios while boosting design flexibility, but migrating from a single- to a multi-arch framework can be tricky. Here’s how early adopters are simplifying the process. Is Migrating Worth the Effort?
The Future of the Enterprise Cloud Is Multi-Architecture Infrastructure
After years of steady declines, the costs of running a cloud data center are now soaring, due to various factors such as aging infrastructure, rising energy costs and supply chain issues. A survey by Uptime Institute showed that enterprise data-center owners are most concerned about rising energy costs and IT hardware costs, respectively. In a recent example, Google announced increases in some of its cloud storage and network egress prices, some of which had previously been free to users.

Will AI replace software engineers in the near future? Generative AI has wedged itself into our workflow. Is it a threat, a useful tool, or accelerated ignorance building the latest giant ball of mud—only faster? It's no threat. Stochastic parrots can’t debug code because they don’t comprehend it in the first place. It can’t be trusted. It’s like having a team member that’s on drugs and lies to you, a lot. I sure hope not, I have bills to pay.
The Growth of State in Kubernetes
Cheryl Hung Cheryl is an advisory board member at Ondat and an engineering leader at Apple. I first worked with Ondat (then StorageOS) back in January 2017 — and, at the time, I thought that it would only take 18 months to solve our Kubernetes storage issues. In hindsight, that was a little optimistic.
5 Reasons Open Source Is Critical To Going Cloud Native
Cheryl Hung, Cloud Native Computing Foundation Commentary Cloud native is in the spotlight with COVID-19-driven digitalization. Here's how open source is making it shine. COVID-19 accelerated the drive to enterprise modernization with cloud native. Corporate boards ramped up their digital initiatives, according to Gartner, beefing up online services for consumers and employees.
Equinix Metal Hosts Infrastructure Event
At GIFEE Day, we’ll look at the future of cloud native from an infrastructure lens: from provisioning and securing to monitoring and optimizing. In 2016, Alex Polvi at CoreOS coined the term “GIFEE” (Google’s Infrastructure for Everyone Else) to describe the benefits unlocked by containers at scale: agility, secure, efficiency, and reliability. Five years in, the cloud native vision has thrived beyond the wildest of imaginations. So what's next for GIFEE? Hardware.
4 cloud-native trends to watch at Kubecon + CloudNativeCon Europe
Cloud-native computing hit an impressive milestone in 2020, with record adoption of containers and accelerated overall growth in tools and technologies. Container adoption rose by 300%, resulting in almost total ubiquity in production environments; containers are now used by 92% of respondents, according to the most recent annual Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) community survey. Kubernetes wasn't far behind, with 83% of respondents using the technology.
CNCF Welcomes Katie Gamanji as Ecosystem Advocate
The End Users in the CNCF Community are the companies and organizations that put our open source technology to work, increasing efficiencies, productivity, and profitability. They are critical to driving innovation that matters, and to keeping our open source ecosystem ever expanding. That is why we are very excited to welcome Katie Gamanji to CNCF as the new Ecosystem Advocate, where she will help develop and execute programs to expand the visibility and growth of the End User Community.
CNCF End User Technology Radar: Observability, September 2020
Today, CNCF is publishing the second of our quarterly CNCF End User Technology Radars; the topic for this Technology Radar is observability. In June, we launched the CNCF End User Technology Radar, a new initiative from the CNCF End User Community. This is a group of more than 140 top companies and startups who meet regularly to discuss challenges and best practices when adopting cloud native technologies.
KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe: Cloud native goes mainstream
Cloud-native deployments are getting larger as adoption becomes mainstream, and businesses are reaping the benefits. More than three quarters of companies use Kubernetes in production, up from 58% last year, according to a recent survey from the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. Also, 84% of survey respondents use containers in production, up more than 15% from 2018. That momentum will be on full display at the upcoming KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe Virtual, which runs August 17-20.

A Guided Journey of Cloud-native Featuring Monzo
Transcript Hung: I'm Cheryl [Hung]. I'm here from the CNCF. I'm presenting with Matt [Heath] from Monzo, who is over there and together we're going to go on a journey through Cloud Native. Matt is going to talk to us about Monzo and their actual journey. I'll start by introducing what the Cloud Native Computing Foundation is, if you haven't heard about. I'll talk you through an example of a Cloud Native architecture and then we'll do the real-life example from Monzo.
Interview with Cheryl Hung, Product Manager at StorageOS | Virtual-Strategy Magazine
CH: Container technology solves many critical challenges for enterprises. These include bridging the DevOps divide and helping organizations bring quality applications to production more rapidly than before. The biggest challenge, however, is that as container technology approaches mainstream adoption, administrators expect it to provide many of the enterprise features that are available in virtualized environments – not least persistent storage.
The 8 Principles of Cloud Native Storage - The New Stack
A key challenge in managing storage is dealing with persistence — a problem that affects developers, system administrators, operations and DevOps throughout organizations. There is no such thing as stateless architecture, it is either outsourced or managed internally, but either way decisions need to be made concerning the tradeoffs of different types of storage. By examining the principles of cloud native storage, organizations can more effectively evaluate what is needed versus what is in use.
The Growth of State in Kubernetes
I first worked with Ondat (then StorageOS) back in January 2017 and, at the time, I thought that Kubernetes storage was going to be a solved problem within 18 months. In hindsight, that was a little optimistic. We are now five years on, and theframeworkI set out for looking at cloud native storage issues (presented here atKubeCon in Austin) continues to be very popular, so many organizations are still grappling with how to deliver persistence in Kubernetes.
