Two confident predictions about artificial intelligence
I generally don't make predictions, but one thing I can say with absolute confidence is that artificial intelligence will radically reshape our work and daily lives. It will, for instance, warn us of diseases like cancer or Alzheimer's years before symptoms appear, and recommend preventative steps, extending the average human lifespan. AI will also make education much more accessible, breaking language and geographical barriers by delivering customised content through virtual learning platforms.

But in this race, it's not just about how fast your car (investment) appears to be moving (nominal returns); it’s about how fast it’s actually going once you account for the road conditions—inflation. In investment terms, nominal returns are the flashy numbers that show how much your portfolio is growing. But inflation, like a slick racetrack, can slow down your progress.

An argument that’s often made is that indexing advocates like myself put too much emphasis on the difference in cost between active and passive investing when a bigger determinant of future returns is investor behaviour. It’s certainly true that our behaviour as investors has a huge impact on the long-term returns we can expect to receive.

When we succeed, it’s human nature to want to take the credit. Say we smash an exam, land a top job or win an award, we like to put it down to our own innate talent or hard work. The uncomfortable truth is that factors outside our control, including just plain luck, play a much bigger part than we care to admit. It’s easier to distinguish luck from effort and skill in some cases than others. Take the recent Olympics, for instance.
