Not everyone is able to earn a living through their passions. However, Barbie Gil-Alviso, a Cal State Fullerton alumni and full-time kinesiology lecturer, has been involved with soccer for most of her life. Currently teaching her 17th year at CSUF, Gil-Alvisio's ties with the university’s soccer program started when she transferred from UCLA. How to give back to the Fullerton community this holiday season
As the holidays approach, the Fullerton community can donate toys, time and food to organizations on or near campus. With over 10% of Fullerton’s population living below the poverty line, donating resources to local organizations is a positive way to give back to the community. Here are some ways to give back this season: The university’s Food Pantry is accepting small, non-perishable food donations or hygiene products in the donation boxes outside of the pantry in the Titan Student Union.
Lack of funding delays CSUF pedestrian bridge project
After a pedestrian bridge over Nutwood Avenue was proposed in 2019, the construction has been delayed due to a lack of funding needed to design the bridge, with its final cost still undetermined. The proposed Titan Gateway Bridge will connect the Cal State Fullerton main campus and College Park at Nutwood and Commonwealth Avenue for an estimated cost of $12 million. The CSUF Physical Master Plan, issued in March 2020, proposed the bridge across Nutwood Avenue for pedestrians.
Children's Center to raise fees in upcoming school year
The Children’s Center is increasing fees by 2% for the 2023-2024 school year. This fee increase is a temporary solution for the center’s long-term financial issue— the center has higher expenses than available resources. Currently, the center’s largest expense is paying staff, which will continue to increase as the minimum wage increases. The center is projected to lose $169,000, while the fee increase is expected to generate around $114,000.
Campus food pantry to relocate
The ASI board of directors approved a budget proposal that would allocate over $500,000 for new projects, including the use of $145,000 to relocate and expand the ASI Food Pantry. The Food Pantry first opened its permanent location last August after hosting a variety of pop-up food pantry locations. The Food Pantry currently does not have enough preparation space to sort the food shipments they receive, said Jeff Fehrn, the director of the Titan Student Union.
Review: Acting outshines weak script at Young Theatre
“She Kills Monsters” is an amusing university production that pays homage to nerd culture and the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. Easily the strongest part of the production was the cast’s acting, which elevated a plotline that was somewhat lacking in places. Cal State Fullerton’s College of the Arts is producing the drama-comedy play written by Qui Nguyen, which runs through Dec. 3 at the Young Theatre in the Clayes Performing Arts Center.

However, these events halted during the COVID-19 pandemic but have returned this fall semester.
Uncomfortable chairs are not an issue to sit on
College lecture halls are intended to be a space for students to learn and further their higher education. However, notoriously uncomfortable seats can hinder this goal — and sometimes even prohibit it. With such uncomfortable seating, it is time for Cal State Fullerton to look into better alternatives that students will find more comfortable to be in. Students’ comfort should come first so finding alternatives should be one of the university's priorities.
Student organizations seek change in the Arts department
The Pencil Mileage Club, Women in Animation at CSUF and ACM Siggraph at Cal State Fullerton held an Open Forum Night in the Titan Theatre where students and alumni were encouraged to voice their feedback for the College of the Arts. One recurring concern from students at the forum held on Oct. 21 was a lack of class availability. Since classes are constantly full, it is difficult for many art students to graduate in four years.

Column: Tuffy's Book Nook highlights Asian authors
For most of my life, I’ve been enchanted by dazzling books written by masterful storytellers. Yet it was not until I was older that I realized I hadn’t read many books by Asian authors. The stories I grew up reading lacked a positive representation in my life. After this realization, I went on a journey to read as many books by Asian authors as possible For those who can relate or are looking to expand their book nook, here are a few books written by Asian authors.

Fusion foods enhance cultural diversity
Fusion food has encountered so many cultural appropriation claims over the years that it’s hard to determine when fusion food is done “right.” April Bullock, professor of liberal studies and environmental studies at Cal State Fullerton, discussed the widespread idea that certain foods are “authentic” or “pure expressions of culture.” Despite associating certain “authentic” ingredients with a specific culture, this can sometimes be the result of cultural exchange.
The best way to watch a movie is spoiled
From big Hollywood blockbusters to small indie films, movie fans often feel the same way: Don’t spoil the ending! While this mantra has always been a part of film culture, it is especially pervasive today, where stumbling upon a plot twist is as easy as a quick scroll or notification. However, people have turned this good-natured tip into anxiety over spoilers, preventing viewers from focusing on what’s actually important: good acting, writing and directing.
Little Arabia is the blueprint for ethnic community recognition
The city of Anaheim officially designated a section of the Brookhurst street between West Broadway and Ball Road as “Little Arabia.” According to Voice of OC, this is the first designated Arab American district in the United States.
