The Road to Mars: What Those Five Landings Might Look Like
Chris B. Behrens · Follow 7 min read · -- Elon Musk plans to land Starships on Mars in 2026: In a longer post here, he clarifies that there will be five uncrewed Starships that will attempt landing, to be followed humans two years later if all goes well with the uncrewed landings. With a little pen and paper analysis, we can narrow down what this is going to look like — and what future earthbound missions will look like as they validate concepts for use on Mars.
The Giant Space Whales of Europa
We're pretty sure that there are alien oceans. By "alien oceans", I just mean oceans on places other than Earth. And if you play with the definition a little bit, we have photographs of one - the methane ocean of Saturn's moon Titan.
Again with the Aliens and Balloons
By Chris B. Behrens Sigh. From a New York Post article on the ongoing Balloonapalooza: The US Air Force general overseeing North American airspace said Sunday he was not ruling out aliens after a string of shoot-downs of unidentified objects. Asked whether he had ruled out an extraterrestrial origin for three floating objects shot down by warplanes in as many days, Gen ...
How to incorporate: Choosing the best legal structure for your startup
The following is a summary of my article on choosing the right legal structure for your startup. In the article, I spell out details on how startups can avoid unnecessary hassles down the road by choosing to incorporate under a legal structure that works best for their situation. You can also read the entire article on SVB.com or listen to it as a podcast Choosing the right path for incorporation can seem difficult.
Do They Know It’s Christmas—On Mars? - Quillette
On October 21, U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Administrator Jim Bridenstine told the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology that he foresees NASA will land astronauts on Mars by 2035. “We need to learn how to live and work in another world,” he told lawmakers.
Microsoft Azure Deployment
In this section, you’ll get the opportunity to deploy a web application and to manage containers. For example, you’ll learn about deployment slots, and the Azure Container Service. Deploying Web Applications or Services in Microsoft Azure by Chris Behrens Dec 13, 2019 / 1h 2m 1h 2m Start Course Description Azure uses deployment slots to manage the promotion of code from verification to production, and mastering this powerful capability is a core challenge in deploying to Azure.
Solar Power is Never Going to Work on Mars, and Everybody Knows It
Courtesy: Bechtel Arthur C. Clarke predicted that in the future the unit of currency would be the megawatt-hour. Bitcoin is certainly pushing us in this direction on Earth, but this will be a hard reality on the surface of Mars. Whatever you want to do — breathe, drink, eat, explore — it will all be determined by how much power you produce.

The earliest use of the full term "space-time continuum" that I can seem to find is by H.P. Lovecraft in the story "The Whisperer in the Darkness" written February-September 1930 and first published in Weird Tales, August 1931.
How did Ant Man breathe when he shrank down to sub-atomic level?
Oxygen molecules would be bigger than him, and they therefore wouldn't be able to fit into his tiny lungs to have oxygen available for cellular respiration, and thence the energy to live. He was at a sub-atomic size for quite a while, and I'm not sure that the suit supplies him with oxygen. An atom is mainly empty space...
Meaning of uniform color in Star Trek Voyager
I was always wondering whether the color of the uniform has still a meaning in Star Trek Voyager. I used to believe this: However, this seems either not to be true or there are too many badly directed episodes. For instance in Course: Oblivion you can see at least 4 people (expect Janeway and Chakotay) wearing red uniforms.
What is a word in English that means "able to learn new things quickly"?
I have often heard sharp used in this context. mentally acute; clever; astute Synonym discussion: intelligent, quick have varying implications. Sharp suggests an acute, sensitive, alert, penetrating quality: a sharp mind. Keen implies observant, incisive, and vigorous: a keen intellect. Intelligent means not only acute, alert, and active, but also able to reason and understand: an intelligent reader.

The National Association of Realtors, who own the trademark on the word Realtor, have severe paranoia about their trademark—I would call it “trademark anxiety”. They always put that registered trademark symbol next to the word "Realtor". Like, even if it appears 100 times on a page, every instance has it with the ®. And it's always in all caps. Look at Realtor.com, or as they call it, "REALTOR.com". In any case, nobody actually says "real-TORE" like they do in the ads.
Who were Sterns' test subjects in The Incredible Hulk?
As you might think, given the question, the answer is typically as ambiguous as you like; it could be lab rats, it could be kidnapped people (given the central city location of his lab, it would most likely be the former, unless he also had test facilities elsewhere in more remote, clandestine locations). Given the lack of information in the movie other than the direct reference from Stern, and the inferences from the locale, you can only speculate.
Why Wasn't Han Solo Suspicious When He First Dived Into the Asteroid Cave?
In The Empire Strikes Back Han dives into a cave in an asteroid to escape the Imperial ships chasing the Millenium Falcon. Originally I was wondering why there was air available to them outside of the ship, as well as heat, but this article about the exogorth explains that. But it leaves open another question: Solo flies the ship into a cavern. Assuming he doesn't notice the teeth at all, there's another issue.
Is it possible to understand what R2-D2 is saying?
This is somewhat covered here. However, not to disregard this question, I found this quote from Ben Burtt, sound designer for Star Wars: "There wasn't any precedent in movies for a character like a robot that was to be so expressive, but not using words in English or any language," Burtt explains. "And I went to synthesizers at first, but the results sounded too much like a machine, just something cold - it didn't seem to have a soul." Burtt tried lots of approaches.
If only the Sith deal in absolutes, why does Obi-Wan say it that way?
I was struck by this line as well when I first heard it in the movie, as not very many lines of that caliber (as in thought-provoking) appear in the "newer" movies. This is a line written in the film to show how far Anakin had really gone. Obi-wan was really the only Jedi at the end who still supported Anakin, and still listened to him when he was angry about being rejected from the title of Jedi Master. The council had for the most part distanced themselves from him.
What's up with the Gyro Pilot in Road Warrior and the pilot in Beyond Thunderdome?
Bruce Spence appears in both the Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome as (apparently) the same character, a post-apocalyptic bush pilot. I say apparently, because I found this on IMDB: Bruce Spence, who played the Gyro Captain in Mad Max 2 plays Jedediah, a different character who robs Max at the start of the film.

None of the choices you give is incorrect, and it is hard to say which of them may or may not be appropriate without knowing what the context is. My own preference is for the first form, but with the preposition "to" instead of "with". Part of this preposition preference comes from the middle-school essay instruction to "compare and contrast" two characters in a story.

I use them interchangeably. kiamlaluno sees a distinction I'm not aware of; even in the specific examples he cites, I would use them interchangeably. The actual term i.e. is an abbreviation of id est in Latin, which literally means "that is". In fact, when I see i.e., I cannot help but say "that is" in my head; this helps me distinguish it from e.g. (exempli gratia, by the way).
What does Sidious mean?
It was a form of naming convention, I believe. Darth Vader from the OT was named based on the word 'invader'. Darth Sidious for Episode 1 works the same way from 'insidious'. This falls apart, however, for Darth Maul and Darth Tyrannus. As has been pointed out in the comments, 'Maul' and 'Tyrannus' both wear their meanings on the sleeves, and they were apparently not intended to survive long as Sidious' seconds. Their names were likely chosen offhand or self-chosen, then.
Will I be able to follow the story if I skip The Next Generation & watch Deep Space 9 directly?
Two things to consider: Apart from a couple of crossovers (a two-parter TNG episode is set on DS9 - and the Picard/Borg link in the pilot) - and the appearance of races and characters from the earlier TNG into DS9, I don't think that you'd have any problems following the story and development in DS9.
lord of the rings
From the book The Two Towers, here's the Gollum/Sméagol dialogue. It's at the end of Book IV, Chapter 2, The Passage of the Marshes. I've modified it slightly to show just the speech, along with the name of the personality speaking, and I've emphasized the personal pronouns: Sméagol: I don't know. I can't help it. Master's got it. Sméagol promised to help the master. Gollum: Yes, yes, to help the master: the master of the Precious.
Why was the Earth in such bad shape in Interstellar?
The movie takes this as a premise without much explanation, leaving much room for hypotheses. As Chris pointed out in his excellent answer, it is mentioned that this blight is killing off all the food crops and presumably also other plant life. We may assume that the devastation of plants and more specifically forests is also causing those sand storms. On a deserted land winds can get stronger and more easily lift dust off the ground.
What exactly was the strategy in Plan B?
The film does not support that Brand is indeed starting Plan B on her own. There is a remark by Murph at the end "maybe right now she is settling in for the long nap". This plus the fact that for a fraction of a second before the spin-docking sequence we're shown, I think, that one of Endurance's compounds destroyed by Mann seems to have contained the population bomb. (Maybe this was not intended by the filmmakers - this could have been other containers, it's not thematised in dialogue.
How does David Lightman in WarGames manage to hack a computer by dialing a number?
I corrected one posting in a comment "You basically had to dial the number for your ISP." is of course wrong - direct dialin predated ISPs. A bit of lengthy personal history below about the credibility of this kind of attack for the times. I was a VAX/VMS sysadmin for a mining company from about 1986 to 1989 and I had one direct dialin line which was a publicly accessible phone number - if anyone had guessed the number they would have been able to get a login prompt.
