Submarine Volcanic Eruptions
Description Scientists use underwater acoustics to map, monitor, and evaluate the eruptions of submarine volcanoes. Acoustic data make it possible to quantify the character of submarine volcano activity, including duration, frequency, intensity, and evolution over time of eruptions. The Mariana Volcanic Arc, located in the western Pacific Ocean, north of Guam, contains at least 20 submarine volcanoes.
Lightning
Description Photo courtesy of Moonraker Australia Lightning strikes the coastal ocean at a rate of about 2 strikes per square kilometer per year. Lightning in the open ocean is rare. Most people are very familiar with lightning because lightning strikes the land much more often than the ocean. In the arctic and antarctic there is very little lightning.
North Atlantic Right Whale
Description Right whales are found in the temperate to subpolar latitudes (between 20° and 60° in both hemispheres) throughout the ocean. These whales received their name from whalers, which considered them the “right” whale to hunt because they swim rather close to shore, float when dead, and produce a large amount of oil when harvested. Today, the North Atlantic (Eubalaena glacialis) and North Pacific (Eubalaena japonica) right whales are among the most endangered of the large whales.
