Limit vs No-limit Poker – The Main Differences
Old and classic or new and exciting? What’s the best choice between poker with a no-limit betting structure and poker with a fixed-limit structure? Let’s start by defining the meaning of our two terms. No-limit - Players can bet or raise any amount of chips from their stack at any time. Fixed-limit - Players must bet or raise in pre-decided fixed increments. In this article, we’ll compare how the two betting structures work.
Your One-Stop Guide to PLO Poker Games
Pot Limit Omaha (or PLO, for short) is an action-packed, high-variance poker game. The format closely resembles Texas Hold’em with a few distinct differences: Pot Limit Omaha (or PLO, for short) is an action-packed, high-variance poker game. The format closely resembles Texas Hold’em with a few distinct differences: Players have four hole cards in their starting hand preflop instead of two. Players must use precisely two of their hole cards and three community cards to make their best 5-card hand.
Put Nash Equilibrium Poker Theory into Practice
The Nash Equilibrium is a game theory concept, which can undoubtedly be used in poker (as we’ll see in this article). But its premise also applies to other areas outside of poker, such as economics and social sciences. In essence, the Nash Theorem states that you would choose not to deviate from an initial course of action. You would take this action even if you knew your opponent’s strategy. In other words, say two poker players knew each other’s strategies.

The Intricacies of Playing a Big Draw Out of Position
Big drawing hands can be tricky to play out of position. So, I’m using a real-life example to break it down. I’ll express and explain what I was thinking throughout to use as a teaching aid. Let’s dissect a hand I played last year at 2-5 at Maryland Live! in Baltimore. You may not agree with the way I played this hand, nor with my reasoning. But that is the beauty of poker. Table of Contents Different Analyses from Different Angles There are different ways to analyse the same situation.
All You Need to Know About Open-Face Chinese Poker (OFC)
Open-Face Chinese Poker, commonly referred to as OFC, is a variant of Chinese Poker. It’s so popular that OFC has largely surpassed regular “closed face” Chinese Poker as the preferred game. This scenario is similar to how No-Limit Hold’em evolved from and largely replaced Limit Hold’em. But, unlike Hold’em, Open-Face Chinese Poker doesn’t use betting rounds. The only similarity it has to Hold’em and other poker games is that it uses the standard poker hand rankings.
Learn to How to Play Pocket Deuces
Pocket deuces (AKA ducks) in poker means a pair of two’s. It can be tricky to play. On the one hand, they’re technically better than hands like ace-king. But, on the other, they’re both the weakest of the 13 possible pocket pairs and only a coinflip against over-cards. In other words, they’re dominated and whenever they’re not, you’re about 50/50 to win. How to properly play pocket deuces is subjective. The following factors play a significant role: Stack sizes Position Opponent’s tendencies, etc.

4 Helpful Tips When Running Bad in Poker
A big part of being a poker player is dealing with the ups and downs in terms of results. This short-term change in results is known as “variance” or “swings” by poker players. It can be quite challenging to weather these swings. Many less experienced players (even some experienced ones) struggle to stay relaxed when running bad. This situation can result in making worse and worse decisions at the poker table.
Top 7 Online Poker Tips by Poker Pro Chris Moorman
During my time as a professional poker player, I have made 8 figures playing online poker tournaments. It’s a lot easier said than done, however. And many poker players get lost along the way. Here are some of my top tips for succeeding in the world of online poker. 1. Strong Fundamentals Win the Money If we spend too long watching our favourite poker stars on TV, it can be tempting to try out some of the crazy bluffs. This tactic is often not a good recipe for success.
The Big Blind - Basic Strategy Concepts
This basic guide will deliver our strategic outlook when playing in the BB (big blind). We’ll select examples from NLHE cash games, but many of the concepts will translate into other formats such as tournaments or PLO. Let’s quickly recap on key features of the big blind: We are forced to invest 1bb before seeing our hole cards. We “close the action” preflop (in most cases. See the box ‘closing the action’) We act last preflop, but typically first postflop (unless playing against the small blind).

D&B Poker | Article | Pot committed ?
Pot committed ? 28/03/2019 by Jonathan Little I was recently told about a poker hand that illustrates a few key errors that many amateur players make on a regular basis. Somewhat early in a $120 buy-in tournament with blinds at 200/400 with a 50 ante, a straightforward recreational player in first position raised to 800 out of his 12,000 effective stack and the player in the cutoff, who was loose and passive, called. Hero looked down at A♥K♣and decided to 3-bet to 2,100.
D&B Poker | Article | Stay Active
Stay Active 21/03/2019 by Jonathan Little I recently had the pleasure to travel to Montreal to play the World Poker Tour $1,000,000 guaranteed $5,000 buy-in event. As usual, I was playing my standard, fairly loose, aggressive strategy, which consists of raising a lot of hands preflop and making numerous small stabs postflop. There was a young Brazilian guy across the table from me who also happened to be very loose and aggressive.
Playing Draws, Part 6
Playing Draws, Part 6 14/03/2019 by Steve Blay This is the sixth and final article in my series on playing draws. We’ve been talking specifically about flush draws and open-ended straight draws. Finally, I want to briefly talk about backdoor draws and how even they can be critical in your decision making process. Suppose you’re the pre-flop raiser with A♣K♦. You raise from middle position, and the big blind calls, and checks the flop to you.
Strong Non-Nut Hand on the River
Strong Non-Nut Hand on the River 28/02/2019 by Jonathan Little I was recently told about a hand from a $75 buy-in poker tournament that illustrates a major mistake many recreational players make with premium, but possibly second-best, hands. With blinds at 2,000/4,000 with a 400 ante, an unknown player in second position raised to 9,100 out of his 160,000 effective stack. The player in the hijack and cutoff seats both called, as did our Hero on the button with 8♥7♥ Hero’s call is perfectly fine.
Playing Draws, Part 5
Playing Draws, Part 5 14/02/2019 by Steve Blay In the previous article we began to talk about playing draws in position. We decided that we would rather just call with draws when we’re in position, rather than raise with them. By doing so, we keep the stacks as deep as possible, and that allows us more creative tactics on the turn and river. The only other thing I’ll say about playing draws in position is, always consider your opponent before deciding to bet or raise as a semi-bluff.
Playing Draws, part 4
Playing Draws, part 4 07/02/2019 by Steve Blay Before I start into the fourth part of my six-part series on playing draws, let’s recap what we’ve learned so far. In the first three segments we talked about playing draws out of position, and found out that: Some draws are meant to be played aggressively (e.g., check-raise with them). Some draws are meant to be played passively (e.g., check-call with them).
The Poker Learning Dilemma
The Poker Learning Dilemma 24/01/2019 by Patricia Cardner As a coach, teacher, and podcast creator, I am in an interesting position. I get to work with and answer questions from some of the most talented and motivated established and up and coming poker players from around the globe, and yet, I also get to see how many struggle with developing their poker expertise, reducing bad habits and consistently playing in the zone.
When Should You Become a Professional Poker Player?
When Should You Become a Professional Poker Player? 18/01/2019 by Jonathan Little One of the most-asked questions I get during my morning show A Little Coffee (Mon – Fri at 9am ET) is “When should I become a professional poker player?” To hopefully avoid re-answering the same again in the future, here are my thoughts on the subject. Let’s assume you play $2-$5 no-limit hold’em at a local card room, which is roughly the stakes most people play who ask the question.
Poker in the Movies
Poker in the Movies 15/01/2019 by Martin Harris Later this year we will be publishing Poker & Pop Culture: Telling the Story of America’s Favorite Card Game, by Martin Harris. Here is a short extract: “Poker in the Movies” The representation of poker in films likely has had more to do with determining opinions about the game and its significance than has any other variety of American popular culture.
Five concepts to keep in mind in 2019
Five concepts to keep in mind in 2019 10/01/2019 by Jonathan Little First, always ask yourself “What hands are in my opponent’s range” then figure out how you fare against that range. If you have a normally strong preflop hand, such as 9-9 or A-Q, and you think your opponent should only have premium hands, perhaps A-A, K-K, Q-Q, and A-K, based on his actions, you should get out of the way.
You do not have to win every pot
You do not have to win every pot 20/12/2018 by Jonathan Little Many poker players are overly timid before the flop, yet when they finally put money in the pot, they feel like they must win it. This usually leads to the player vastly overplaying marginal hands whereas in reality, they should be trying to control the size of the pot. For example, you do not want to pile in your stack against most opponents with a hand such as A-K on a 7-4-2 board or Q-Q on a K-J-9 board.
D&B Poker | Article | Suits You Sir!
Suits You Sir! - a competition to win a $30 D&B voucher 14/12/2018 by Byron Jacobs We have been producing poker books at D&B for around 15 years. I have organised, laid out and typeset all of these poker books. I have also edited and proofread a lot of them. In that time there is one thing I have noticed that consistently happens when authors generate hands to illustrate points under discussion.
Playing Draws, part 2
Playing Draws, part 2 29/11/2018 by Steve Blay In my previous article I talked about playing draws aggressively on the flop. We decided that we should size our bets and raises so that we can maximize our fold equity. Or in other words, WE want to be the one to make the all-in bet, if it comes to that.
Getting thin value on the turn
I was recently told about a close situation by one of my students that I think is particularly educational. With blinds at 75/150, the action folded to a straightforward player who limped from the hijack seat. My student raised to 550 out of his 28,000 stack with K♥Q♦. A splashy calling station called in the big blind and the initial limper folded.
ANNOUNCING: Poker & Pop Culture
Hello, readers! I’m excited to share with you news about my forthcoming book for D&B Poker, Poker & Pop Culture: Telling the Story of America’s Favorite Card Game, due to appear next summer in time for the World Series of Poker. It’s fair to say the book has been over a decade in the making, dating back to some of my earliest columns and articles exploring the history of poker and the many ways the game has popped up in American popular culture since its introduction in the early 19th century.

Good Poker Is Boring
Have you ever watched Floyd Mayweather fight? It’s the most boring thing in the world to watch. His defense is flawless. His form is impeccable. The other fighter can never land a punch. Floyd just sneaks in there, throws a flurry, and gets out. Every. Single. Time. He gets his points and runs. And that’s why he’s undefeated through 50 prize fights. Growing up, I was always confused as to why I was a successful poker player.

Telling lies at the table
In 2015 I played two very low buy-in events at the WSOP. Although I’d probably played half a million hands online prior to that, it was my first ever experience of live play. I busted out of both events and there is only one hand that I remember. There is one very specific reason why I remember it and it has nothing to do with the hand itself being of any great interest. I was the pre-flop aggressor and we emerged heads-up on the flop. I had flopped a moderate draw.
Short Stacked Blunder
I was recently told about a hand from the final table of a live $300 buy-in tournament that illustrates a few key mistakes that many players make when playing short stacked. With blinds at 5,000/10,000 with a 10,000 big blind ante, everyone folded to the small blind who started with 150,000. He was the shortest stack at the final table, but there were a few other players with between 17 and 25 big blinds. The blind was a loose, aggressive player with 50 big blinds.
How to Rewire Your Poker Brain
You raise from the button with QJo. Your opponent calls you from the big blind. You both are 50 BBs deep. The board comes 9-6-2 rainbow. Your opponent checks to you. There’s 6 big blinds in the middle. What do you do? If you bet, how much do you bet? In this situation, what do you honestly do? What have you done the last fifty times you played in this spot? Did you say you bet half-pot here normally? “Because that’s my normal continuation bet size,” is not an answer.
Interesting Bluff at $1/$2
I was recently told about an interesting hand from a $1/$2 no-limit cash game that illustrates a few key points that you should always consider while at the table. Two weak, loose players limped and then a generally tight, aggressive player raised to $18 from the cutoff. Our Hero in the small blind with $350 decided to 3-bet to $50 with J♦T♦. From out of position facing a gigantic preflop raise, I would definitely either 3-bet or fold, opting to fold the vast majority of the time.
The Wrong Way to Play Trips
I was recently told about a hand from a $50 buy-in online tournament that illustrates a common mistake many recreational players make on a regular basis. With blinds at 30/60 with a 5 ante, everyone folded to our Hero in the cutoff who raised to 150 out of his 1,600 effective stack with A♥8♥. Unknown players on the button and big blind called. The flop came 9♥8♦8♠ , giving Hero trips. The pot was 510 with 1,450 remaining in the stacks. The big blind checked and Hero checked as well.
Overplaying a marginal pair
I was recently told about a hand that illustrates a few costly mistakes that many amateur poker players make on a regular basis. In a $1/$2 no-limit cash game, all seven players limped around to our Hero in the small blind who raised to $8 out of his $150 effective stack with 9-9. I despise Hero’s raise size.
Modern Poker Theory: Hand Playability
A key component of advanced poker thinking is the concept of hand playability. It is often not good enough to say that your hand has a certain amount of equity against a particular range if it is unlikely that you will be able to realise that equity.
Avoiding a Cooler with Pocket Jacks
I recently played a fun hand from a $1,500 buy-in side event that I think is incredibly educational. With blinds at 400/800 with a 100 ante, a loose, aggressive player raised to 1,800 out of his 30,000 stack from third position at a nine-handed table. I found pocket Jacks on the button and 3-bet (re-raised) to 4,400 out of my 25,000 stack.
